Figures 3–5. Male of Perdita (Perdita) rhois Cockerell, a tiny species of bee occurring widely in the Sierra Nevada and westward in California and southward into Baja California, Mexico. This is putatively the auspicious species we have to thank for first sparking Mich's fascination with bees — a most exalted honor and making it, at least in terms of its symbolic influence on the subsequent prosperity of melittology, one of the most awe-inspiringly portentous of species among the bees. 3.
