FIGS 1±4. (1) Babesia shortti: two cruciform schizonts in upper erythrocyte and schizont precursor in lower erythrocyte. (2) Babesia shortti: multiple invasion of erythrocyte (three schizonts) causing displacement and rotation of host cell nucleus. Merozoites have separated and only chromatin is visible. Upper erythrocyte shows separation of merozoites from fan-shaped (tetraradiate) schizont. (3) Babesia peircei: fan-shaped schizont showing nuclear chromatin in distal half of parasites. (4) Babesia rustica from Hirundo daurica showing cruciform schizont. Scale bar = 15 mm.
