Fig. 56. Left:. Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon (1865–1958), military engineer and builder of telegraph lines through Brazilian wilderness and founder of Brazil's acclaimed Indian Protection Service. Right: Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), naturalist and 26th President of the United States. After his unsuccessful bid for reelection in 1912, Roosevelt initiated a South American expedition under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History. After arriving in Brazil, Roosevelt's party was invited to join up with a Brazilian contingent headed by Colonel Rondon. Their objective was to explore Rondon's Rio da Dúvida (River of Doubt) to its unknown destination.
