FIGURE 2. An adult male Hoplodactylus cryptozoicus, collected live in January 2000 from the type locality in the Spence Burn, Takitimu Mountains. This specimen illustrates the typical primary markings (i.e., the herringbone­shaped patches connected longitudinally), and the two types of ground colour which occur in adults, grey (in this case restricted to the flanks) and two­tone orange.
