The maxillipeds are flanked laterally by mandibles which are fused to the cephalothorax. This explains why mandibles are usually missing among dissected mouthparts of this genus. The part distally in between maxillipeds is the hypopharynx, which envelopes the maxillae and distal parts of the mandibles. Note the bulging lenses of lateral eyes.
