In both amphibians, ancestral clades diverged in the Early Miocene and probably expanded throughout Asia during the Miocene climatic optimum; extant clades and species then appeared as the climate progressively cooled down and the South-East Asian monsoon strengthened in the Late Miocene onwards, and recently accelerated during the Pleistocene Quaternary glaciations.
