Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 902, last line, his father&rsquo;s name was simply Khw&acirc;jah Balaw&icirc;) of Sh&icirc;r&acirc;z, with the takhalluṣ &lsquo;Urf&icirc;, who came to India A.H. 994 (A.D. 1586), and died at L&acirc;hur in Shaww&acirc;l, A.H. 999 (A.D. 1591, July, August), not 1002, as Taḳ&icirc; K&acirc;sh&icirc; wrongly asserts (see A. Bodleian Cat., Nos. 1051-1054, and No. 1991; Rieu ii. pp. 667 sq., 738b (where a special tarj&icirc;&rsquo;, styled گلشن راز, is noticed), and 845b; W. Sprenger&rsquo;s Catal.</p> <p>Special collections of these ḳaṣ&icirc;das are noticed in W. Pertsch, p. 65, No. 11; p. 696, No. 3, and p. 714, No. 1 in 686; one particular ḳaṣ&icirc;dah, styled همراس مماس, is mentioned, ib. p. 74, No. 3, and p. 79, No. 3. Persian commentaries on &rsquo;Urf&icirc;&rsquo;s ḳaṣ&icirc;das by Mun&icirc;r, Mirz&acirc; J&acirc;n (the latter styled مفتاح النّكات, and completed A.H. 1073=A.D. 1662, 1663), Ḳuṭb-ald&icirc;n (A.H. 1101=A.D. 1689, 1690), and R&acirc;j&ucirc; &lsquo;ulw&icirc; (styled نگارنامۀ فیضی , A.H. 1111=A.D. 1699, 1700), are described in. No. 1054 of the Bodleian Cat.; in Rieu ii. p. 668b: and in A. Sprenger, Catal., pp. 529 and 530 respectively; five different Turkish commentaries on certain ḳaṣidas and muḳaṭṭa&rsquo;&acirc;t in G. Fl&uuml;gel i. pp. 594 and 595. The ḳaṣidas have been printed in Calcutta, A.H. 1254 (A.D. 1839), with a commentary by Aḥmad ibn &lsquo;Abd-alraḥ&icirc;m (also noticed in A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 530); and (with some muḳaṭṭa&rsquo;&acirc;t and tarj&icirc;&rsquo;s) in Lucknow, without a date; a شرح قصائد عرفى and a ديوان عرفى also appeared in Lucknow, 1880; an English translation of selected ḳaṣidas of &lsquo;Urf&icirc; was published in Calcutta, 1887.</p> <p>2.Ghazals, inalphabetical order, onfol. 55b, beginning:</p> <p>افگار ما (other copies سينۀ) تحفۀ مرهم نگیرد خاطر</p> <p>سایۀ گل بر نتابد گوشۀ دستار ما</p> <p>comp. A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 529, l. 3, and Nos. 1052 and 1053 in the Bodleian Cat.; other collections of &lsquo;Urfi&rsquo;s ghazals are noticed in W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 62, No. 3. b; and p. 701, No. 40.</p> <p>3. Ḳiṭ&rsquo;as, on fol. 151b, beginning: اى كه در آئينه ام خودرا سيه رو ديدۀ الخ.</p> <p>The usual initial poem of this part اى دل راهزن الخ is found here, on fol. 152a, l. 4 ab infra.</p> <p>4.Rub&acirc;&rsquo;&icirc;s, on fol. 160b, beginning:</p> <p>يا رب نفسى ده كه ثنا پردازم</p> <p>وين نغمه بآهنگ سزا پردازم</p> <p>see No. 1052 in the Bodleian Cat.</p> <p>5.Majma&rsquo;-alabk&acirc;r ( مجمع الابكار), a mathnaw&icirc; in imitation of Niż&acirc;m&icirc;&rsquo;s Makhzan-alasr&acirc;r (but not with the same title, as is wrongly stated in A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 529), on fol. 176b, beginning:</p> <p>بسم الله الرّحمن الرّحيم &ndash; موج نخستست زبحر قديم</p> <p>See. Ḥ. Khalfa v. p. 389, No. 11416; Krafft, p. 69; and an additional copy in W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 64, No. 8.c.</p> <p>6.Farh&acirc;d u Sh&icirc;r&icirc;n (فرهاد و شيرين), or, as it is styled in the colophon of the following copy: Khusrau u Sh&icirc;n, خسرو و شيرين, another mathnaw&icirc;, on fol. 215b, beginning:</p> <p>خداوندا دلم بى نور تنگست</p> <p>دل من سنگ و کوه طور سنگست</p> <p>Both the prose-preface and the S&acirc;ḳ&icirc;n&acirc;ma (see the following copies) are wanting in this collection.</p> <p>Dated by Shaikh Muḥammad Sa&rsquo;&icirc;d of Bukh&acirc;r&acirc;, A.H. 1021 (A.D. 1612, 1613); at the end of this copy there appears the same chronogram, which is noticed in G. Fl&uuml;gel i. p. 593, in A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 529, and in Rosen, p. 263, viz.:</p> <p>نكات سحرى و اعجازى (other copies طرفه) اين درج</p> <p>پردازی (other copies برقم) چون گشت مکمّل زرقم</p> <p>(other copies يافت) مجموعه طراز قدس تأريخش گفت</p> <p>اوّل ديوان عرفئ شيرازى</p> <p><br> &nbsp;</p> <p>which gives as date for the completion of this collection, A.H. 996 (A.D. 1588), not 986, as Sprenger erroneously states, nor 995, as Fl&uuml;gel asserts, nor 997 or 998, as the transcriber of this copy and the copyist of No. 85 in Rosen&rsquo;s MSS. add. The number of the ḳaṣ&icirc;das is expressed in this ta&rsquo;r&icirc;kh by the units, viz. 1, 6, 4, 6, 1, 1, and 7=26; the number of the ghazals by the tens, viz. 30, 10, 50, 70, 80, 10, 10, and 10=270; the number of the rub&acirc;&rsquo;&icirc;s and ḳiṭ&rsquo;as by the hundreds, viz. 200, 300, and 200 = 700 (i.e. 380 rub&acirc;&rsquo;&icirc;s and 320 ḳiṭ&rsquo;as). The further remark of the transcriber of this copy, that this ta&rsquo;r&icirc;kh also gives the date of the poet&rsquo;s death, is wrong; the proper chronograms for his decease, viz. 999, are استاد البشر (see A. Sprenger, Cat., p. 112, last line) and عرفى جوانه مرگ شدی (quoted in Bad&acirc;&rsquo;&ucirc;n&icirc;, see Rieu ii. p. 667a).</p> <p>No. 1484, ff. 227, 3 coll., the first and third ll. 13, the middle one ll. 22; Nasta&rsquo;l&icirc;ḳ; illuminated frontispieces on ff. 1b, 55b, 176b; and 215b; size, 7 in. by 43/8 in.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
