The oral apparatus of tetrahymenids is morphologically plastic (right inset). Most species have maintained the plesiomorphic condition, while some have completely lost the oral apparatus (Clausilocola) or have evolved a highly complex, peritrich-like oral ciliature that was displaced posteriorly (hysterocinetids).
