Mam Tor - landslide - upper road

Mam Tor's 'old' road was closed in the 1970s when they finally gave up trying to keep it open following on-going damage due to landsliding. Here the damage to the road illustrates its impact and the year-onyear repairs to try to keep the road open. This is one of the more active sections of this rotational landslide that the road used to cross. The geology of the the hillside is Carboniferous age sedimentary rocks with shales beneath interbedded sandstones known locally as Edale Shales and Mam Tor Beds respectively. The site is an excellent fieldtrip site being relatively accessible and illustrating a range of landforms. Its also site that is well used by hikers and mountain bikes.
