Rock Shelter Cup Marks in Gleann Da-Eig
This cup-marked slab of schist is situated underneath a hidden rock shelter in Gleann Da-Eig, a side valley of Glen Lyon. It was found by George Currie in 2006 and probably not visited since until I uncovered it again in July 2022. The overhanging rock is obviously much used as a shelter to this day, but for the local sheep since the slab was buried beneath a good covering of compacted sheep....err...manure. Soutra 2, Cup and Ring stone, Scottish Borders
Neolithic cup and ring marked stone NT 45167 58000 I found this stone on 30 July 2020 by the fence line of a grass pasture field, adjacent to the B6368 road on Soutra Hill, Borders, Scotland . The stone is a round boulder 30 cm x 30 cm by 20 cm. The stone weighs 14.85kg. There is one cup mark in the centre of the stone surrounded by two concentric circles. The cup and the rings are joined by a groove. Tool marks can be seen. The markings are only on the top face of the stone. The stone has been reported as Treasure Trove and is now with National Museum of Scotland. The stone was loosely embedded in turf where it must have had been cleared from the field or during construction of adjacent road drain, probably within the last 20 years. There was a previous cup and ring marked stone found in the same field in 2005 (Canmore ID 276641 at NT45300 58000). Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Cullerlie of Echt Stone Circle cup marked stone
Cullerlie of Echt is a stone circle on a ridge of gravel running into the low plain of Leuchar Moss at 90m OD. Eight rough boulders, graded to the north and with their bases keeled, are set in a ring, 10.2m in diameter, within which lie eight small kerb cairns, all but one with eleven kerb-stones. The central cairn is the largest, at 3.4m in diameter; it is the only one to have a double kerb. This and six other cairns each has 11 kerbstones. Canmore reports that a survey conducted in 2004 disclosed the following features: Outer circle stones: Northernmost stone has one cup mark on lower inner (S-facing) face. Easternmost stone has one cup mark on upper N-facing face. Southernmost stone has one cup mark on inner N-facing face. Inner circle stones : (This 3D Model) Easternmost stone of central cairn kerb has one large cup mark on inner face. However, from the 3D models the cup marks all appear to be a natural features. White Caterthun cup marked boulder
The White Caterthun is a hill by Edzell, Scotland which is crowned by a massive stonewalled fort measuring about 140m by 60m internally within a pair of walls, the inner measuring about 12m in thickness and up to 3m in height with the outer wall some 6m in thickness. Outside the fort further lines of defence can be seen, including a rampart with internal quarry ditch and further enclosing banks lower down the slopes. On the west side of the fort between the stone walls and the outer rampart there is a large boulder measuring about 2m by 1m, which bears about seventy cup-markings. The boulder has been broken in two at one point and joined with metal staples which have now gone and concrete.
