Data to support "Plastic Rivers project: Consumer-Based Actions to Reduce Plastic Pollution in Rivers: a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Approach"

Focusing on the most commonly occurring consumer plastic items present in European freshwater environments, we identified and evaluated consumer-based actions with respect to their direct or indirect potential to reduce macroplastic pollution in freshwater environments. As the main end users of these items, concerned consumers are faced with a bewildering array of choices to reduce their plastics footprint, notably through recycling or using reusable items. Using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis approach, we explored the effectiveness of 27 plastic reduction actions with respect to their feasibility, economic impacts, environmental impacts, unintended social/environmental impacts, potential scale of change and evidence of impact. Total action scores have been calculated using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) on 27 plastic reduction actions identified though a literature review. Each of the total action scores is the weighted sum of 1-5 scores (assigned to each of ten criteria to assess the positive environmental impact of each action, based on the literature review) and % weights of each criterion to rank their relative importance. We provide two tables in csv format: 1) the % weights assigned by 15 experts to rank the relative importance of socio-economic and environmental criteria to assess plastic reduction actions; 2) the 1-5 scores assigned to each of the ten criteria in relation to each of the 27 actions; the median weights for each of the ten criteria calculated from 1); and the total action scores of each of the 27 actions calculated as weighted sum (e.g. TAS action 1: sum of ten products of % criterion weight * 1-5 scores assigned to each combination criterion - plastic reduction action).

SBC LTER: Beach: Dynamics of intertidal wrack consumer distributions on an SBC Beach

Distribution of Intertidal Wrack Consumer Beds Over Time Zonation of intertidal biota on sandy beaches is extremely dynamic and challenging to model due to the unstable nature of the sandy substrate and the high mobility of the biota. Distributions of these biota can shift strongly with tides, wave runup, storms, and beach conditions on a variety of temporal scales. High frequency measurements of the positions of intertidal beds of a mid and an upper shore invertebrate species, including wrack consuming talitrid amphipods (Megalorchestia spp) and a deposit feeding polychaete (Euzonus mucronata), were conducted on an SBC study beach, West Isla Vista, for one year.

Data from: A global estimate of terrestrial net secondary production of primary consumers

Aim: Net Secondary production (NSP) emerges from the consumption of Net Primary Production (NPP) by any heterotrophic organism. There has been sporadic interest in the importance of NSP, but no global estimates have been produced. We revisit NSP and attempt a global estimate using contemporary NPP data combined with modern metabolic scaling theory for consumption rates. We distinguish between potential NSP as the amount of secondary production that could be supported by NPP, and realized NSP as the amount remaining after anthropogenic habitat disruption. Location: Global Time period: 2000-2014 Methods: We present a model of NSP implementing a Type II functional response for consumption rates wherein search efficiency and handling time are calculated based on consumer mass and ambient temperature. We solve this model for each 0.05-decimal-degree pixel in the global terrestrial biosphere using as data inputs NPP (MOD17A3) and land-surface temperature (MOD11C3). We aggregate estimates within global land cover classifications (MCD12C1) to obtain cover-specific and global estimates of NSP. We also correct our estimates based on declines in consumer abundance reported in Living Planet Report 2014. Results: We estimate potential NSP is 4.74 PgCy-1 globally (95%~CI~=~3.75--5.75). When we correct for global consumer population declines, realized NSP declines to 2.37 PgCy-1 (95%~CI~=~1.86--2.89), a loss of 50% in the rate of carbon flux through secondary consumers. Main Conclusions: Our estimates are sufficient to suggest that the flux of carbon through consumers is of a similar magnitude to many other fluxes critical to the global carbon cycle. We view this as a hypothesis to be tested that suggests NSP deserves significantly more attention in earth systems, macroecology, and biogeochemical research.

Data from: Regulation of fatty acid composition related to ontogenetic changes and niche differentiation of a common aquatic consumer

<p>Fatty acids (FAs) are key nutrients for fitness which take part in multiple physiological processes over the ontogeny of organisms. Yet, we lack evidence on how FA nutrition mediates life-history trade-offs and ontogenetic niche shifts in natural populations. In a field study, we analyzed ontogenetic changes in the FAs of Eurasian perch (<i>Perca fluviatilis</i> L.), a widespread fish that goes through ontogenetic niche shifts and can have high individual niche specialization. Diet explained most of the variation in the FA composition of perch dorsal muscle over early ontogeny (28%), while the total length explained 23%, suggesting that perch significantly regulated FA composition over early ontogeny. Condition explained 1% of the remaining variation. 18:3n-3 (ALA) and 18:4n-3 (SDA) indicated planktivory; 18:1n-7, benthivory; and 22:6n-3 (DHA), piscivory in perch diet. Conversely, perch regulated long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as 20:5n-3 (EPA), 20:4n-6 (ARA) and 22:6n-3 (DHA) over ontogeny, emphasizing the role of such FAs in early growth and sexual maturation. Adult perch increasingly retained 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9 suggesting higher energy storage in older perch. Furthermore, differences in DHA availability in diet correlated with intra-cohort differences in perch growth, potentially hindering the overall use of benthic resources and promoting earlier shifts to piscivory in littoral habitats. Overall, this study indicates that in addition to diet, internal regulation may be more important for FA composition than previously thought. Differences between FA needs and FA availability may lead to life-history trade-offs that affect the ecology of consumers, including their niche.</p>

Data from: Temperature does not influence functional response of amphipods consuming different trematode prey

<p>Direct consumption on free-living cercariae stages of trematodes by non-host organisms interferes with trematode transmission and leads to reduced infections in the next suitable hosts. Consumer functional responses provide a useful tool to examine relationships between consumption rates and ecologically relevant prey densities, whilst also accounting for abiotic factors that likely influence consumption rates. We investigated how temperature influences the consumer functional response of the amphipod <i>Gammarus lacustris</i> towards the cercariae of three freshwater trematodes (<i>Diplostomum</i>, <i>Apatemon</i> and <i>Trichobilharzia</i>). Amphipods displayed different functional responses towards the parasites, with Type II responses for <i>Diplostomum</i> and Type I responses for <i>Apatemon</i> prey. Temperature did not alter the consumption rate of the amphipod predator. <i>Trichobilharzia</i> was likely consumed at similar proportions as <i>Diplostomum</i>, however this could not be fully evaluated due to low replication. Whilst Type II responses of invertebrate predators are common to various invertebrate prey types, this is the first time a non-filter feeding predator has been shown to exhibit Type I response towards cercarial prey. The prey-specific consumption patterns of amphipods were related to cercarial distribution in the water column rather than to the size of cercariae or temperature influence. The substantial energy flow into food webs by non-host consumer organisms highlights the importance of understanding the mechanisms that modulate functional responses and direct predation in the context of parasitic organisms.</p>
