MOVMUS-UJI Dataset & ERGOMOVMUS: EMG and kinematics data of the hand in activities of daily living with special interest for ergonomics

A dataset of human hand kinematics and forearm muscle activation collected during the performance of a wide variety of activities of daily living (ADLs) is presented, with tagged characteristics of products and tasks. A total of 26 participants performed 161 ADLs, selected to be representative of common elementary tasks, grasp types, product orientations and performance heights. 105 products were used, being varied regarding shape, dimensions, weight and type (common products and assistive devices).

The data were recorded using CyberGlove instrumented gloves on both hands measuring 18 degrees of freedom on each and seven surface EMG sensors per arm recording muscle activity. The products and their arrangement were the same across subjects, and tasks were performed in a guided way. Data of more than 4100 ADLs is presented in this dataset as Matlab structures with full continuous recordings, which may be used in applications such as machine learning or to characterize healthy human hand behaviour.

The dataset is accompanied with a custom data visualization application (ERGOMOVMUS) as a tool for ergonomics applications, allowing visualization and calculation of aggregated data from specific task, product and/or subjects’ characteristics.

v3.0 includes the following updates:

- Statistical summary of the recordings both in .xlsx and .ods file format (v1.1 only included it in .xlsx file format)

- Updated experiment details in "MOVMUS-UJI DATASET GUIDE.pdf".

Video-Trajectory Hand Dataset

This dataset consists of color and depth videos of human worker motions and their corresponding Cartesian trajectories of the worker’s hand, captured using OptiTrack motion capture system. Each motion sample comprises 4 files (RGB video, depth video, a Cartesian trajectory of worker’s hand and a label of the motion, representing one of four possible goals from 1 to 4). Total number of motion samples: 811.

Structure: MPEG-4 videos of human worker motion and corresponding NumPy array files, containing Cartesian trajectories and a label of the motion. Dataset is in a .zip archive. Extract using 7-Zip or similar software. Video files (.avi) can be opened using VLC media player or any other video player that supports MPEG-4 codec. The .npy files can be loaded using Python (>=3.7) and the Python library NumPy (>=1.19.2).

All Hands on Deck' or Separate Lifeboats? Public support for European Economic Solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic

What are the sources of public support for international aid in times of crises? This paper
investigates the determinants of public support for the EU Covid-19 aid package (’NextGenera-
tionEU’, NGEU), the largest aid package in EU history. We show that although public support
for within-EU redistribution is influenced by long-standing factors such as ideology and citizen
identities, endorsement or opposition cues taken from elite actors are important determinants
of public support for aid in times of crises. Conversely, the effects of policy details about the
aid package are more mixed. Using what is to the best of our knowledge the first EU-wide
study on public opinion on the Covid-19 rescue package, our vignette experiment shows that
short-term shifts in support for the rescue package are driven mostly by elite endorsement
cues rather than information about the precise terms of aid or amount. We also find that the
role of elite endorsement cues varies across different subsets of the population depending on
their level of political sophistication, national level attachment and country context. Thus, in
the face of multidimensional decision-making in times of crises, national institutions are key
catalyst of moving short-term support for policies of international solidarity. We discuss how
our findings have implications for democratic governance and accountability in the EU.

The evolution and biological correlates of hand preferences in anthropoid primates

The evolution of human right-handedness has been intensively debated for decades. Manual lateralization patterns in non-human primates have the potential to elucidate evolutionary determinants of human handedness. However, restricted species samples and inconsistent methodologies have so far limited comparative phylogenetic studies. By combining original data with published literature reports, we assembled data on hand preferences for standardized object manipulation in 1,786 individuals from 38 species of anthropoid primates, including monkeys, apes, and humans. Based on that, we employ quantitative phylogenetic methods to test prevalent hypotheses on the roles of ecology, brain size and tool use in primate handedness evolution. We confirm that human right-handedness represents an unparalleled extreme among anthropoids and found taxa displaying population-level handedness to be rare. Species-level direction of manual lateralization was largely uniform among non-human primates and did not strongly correlate with any of the selected biological predictors, nor with phylogeny. In contrast, we recovered highly variable patterns of hand preference strength, which show signatures of both ecology and phylogeny. In particular, terrestrial primates tend to display weaker hand preferences than arboreal species. These results challenge popular ideas on primate handedness evolution, especially the postural origins hypothesis. Furthermore, they point to a potential adaptive benefit of disparate lateralization strength in primates, a measure of hand preference that has often been overlooked in the past. Finally, our data show that human lateralization patterns do not align with trends found among other anthropoids, suggesting that unique selective pressures gave rise to the unusual hand preferences of our species.

Praying Hands 3D Model - Albrecht Durer

More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, water colors, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love "The Praying Hands." Moinho manual/ Hand mill

Stone device used to crush and grind grain using only manual force. The lower piece remains static, while the smallest piece would be manually rubbed over it. The material to be milled was placed between the two. This technology appears during the Neolithic, being used throughout prehistory.
