Bathymetry of Hog Island Bay of the Virginia Coastal Reserve 1997-1999
This dataset contains a grid describing the bathymetry of Hog Island Bay. It is based on interpolation of over 10,000 individual depth soundings. An Innerspace Technologies digital depth sounder provided the depth data. A GPS unit with real-time NAVbeacon corrections (est. accuracy 5 meters) was used to provide locations. Data was corrected for tidal changes to be relative to Mean Sea Level. Data is projected to UTM WGS84 zone 18. Elevation Surveys of Hog Island, VA Transects in 1989
Data from Transect Surveys. N is the North transect comprised of the 90 and 270 degree (magnetic) radials from the radial survey of the North end of Hog Island. T1 etc are the Hog Island research transects. Transects 1, 2, 4, 5 and beach profiles of 3. For each transect elevations and distance from the steel post transect marker nearest the ocean. Elevations are relative to the high water line on day when the data was collected. Terry has the dates in the field notes if they are not available in the data. This data has been reformatted for easy incorporation into the database.

Leaf area and mass for Morella cerifera leaves were measured inside and outside shrub thickets of different age (ranging from ~12 to ~50 years old) on Hog Island Virginia and Specific Leaf Area (SLA) was calculated.
Hog Island Shrub Transect Temperatures 2015-2016
Field work was conducted on Hog Island from May 2015 to March 2016. In order to quantify the effect of the shrub thicket on microclimate, three transects were established on Hog Island that traverse the edge of three shrub thickets. The first transect was located at 37-deg 22min 46.37sec N, 75-deg 42min 49.28sec W and the second at 37-deg 22min 47.04sec N, 75-deg 42min 52.58sec W. These two transects ran east to west, perpendicularly through the thicket edge, with the eastern side of the transect inside the thicket and the western side of the transect outside of the thicket. The second transect was 85 m west of the first transect, and had a partially opened canopy due to recent shrub mortality. The third transect was located 180 m north of the first two transects, at 37-deg 22min 51.00sec N, 75-deg 42min 45.06sec W. It ran north to south, with the northern side of the transect inside the thicket. Each transect began 10 m inside the shrub thicket, crossed perpendicularly through the thicket edge, and ended in the open canopy grassland, 10 m away from the thicket edge. Along these 20 m transects were sampling points every 5 m such that a point existed 10 m inside the thicket, 5 m inside the thicket, at the thicket edge, 5 m outside the thicket, and 10 m outside the thicket. The midpoint of each transect which coincided with the edge of the thicket was defined as the location where shrub cover overcame grass cover. The thickets were chosen because they were at least 20 m wide, roughly level elevation and same age, and the adjacent grassland was free of shrubs that may influence the grassland plots. There were also three sampling points 500 m south of the transects, inside free-standing, grassland shrubs which were beyond influence of the thicket. Three temperature sensors (T Buttons, Thermodata) set at different heights, ground level, 20 cm, and 1 m, recorded bihourly measurements at each of the six plots along each transect (n=3) including the free-standing shrubs.
Water level measurements on a southern Hog Island marsh, April-July 2014
Water level recorded in a backbarrier marsh on Hog Island concurrent to marsh burial experiment. HOBO Water level loggers (Model U20L-004) were placed just outside the plot at the two experimental sites in the high marsh and low marsh to record water level every 15 minutes. The loggers were suspended from steel wire at a constant elevation inside slotted PVC wells that allow water to flow through without allowing sediment infilling. Pressure measurements were then converted to water level using concurrently measured barometric data from Phillips Creek Marsh (accessible through data set: VCR12201).

Land Cover Classification for Hog Island, VA, 2018
Image processing/classification of Sentinel-2 imagery (2018 Summer scene) was used to produce a land cover classification of Hog Island, Virginia. Microclimate and growth data under three vegetation manipulations with and without Morella cerifera seedlings and grass clipping on Hog Island, Virginia, 2018
These data represent the growth, physiology, and microclimate measurements of 30 Morella cerifera seedlings in a south Hog Island swale. There were three manipulations: shrub seedlings with intact grass canopy, shrub seedlings with grasses clipped, and plots with no shrub seedlings but an intact grass canopy. Measurements include shrub seedlings dimensions, and isotopic characterizations for N and C.

Shoreline and Upland/Marsh data for Hog Island, VA 1852-2001
Shorelines and upland/marsh boundaries from National Ocean Survey maps (1852, 1871, 1910, 1919,), aerial photos (1943, 1967, 1980, 1990), and satellite TM scene (1993). Update: John Porter added 2001 based on digitization of a 10/15/2001 IKONOS satellite image. The high tide line was digitized on the beach based on the edge of the wetted sand. For the marsh, the marsh-lagoon border was digitized. The upland/marsh boundary is not included for 2001. This is dataset has been superceded by dataset VCR01078, which includes a combined shapefile for all shorelines from all years.
