Tree, shrub, and herb data from 10 Hillslope Project sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin

Vegetation was surveyed on 10 sites in the upper Little Tennessee River watershed in Macon County, North Carolina during the summer of 2012. The sites represent a gradient of development, including forested sites, agricultural sites, and exurban sites. All woody vegetation >2.5 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured and identified within twelve 10 x 10 m plots at each site. Woody shrubs >0.5 m in height and <2.5 cm DBH were counted and identified within a 1x10 m transect in each plot. Herbs and woody plants <0.5m in height were identified and percent cover estimated in 3 1 x 1 m subplots located within each of the larger 10 x 10 m plots.

Survey of the impacts of an invasive grass (Microstegium vimineum) on soil C and N dynamics in western North Carolina

A survey of soil carbon, nitrogen, plant, and litter decomposition dynamics was conducted along a land-use gradient extending NW from Asheville, NC in the French Broad River Watershed. We selected 12 forest sites between 580 and 780m in elevation. Within each site, there were four paired invaded-uninvaded plots (48 pairs; 96 plots). Invaded plots contained populations of Microstegium vimineum. Soil C pools, soil N pools and transformations, plant community dynamics and litter decomposition rates were quantified in each plot.

Weather data from Lower Jones Creek Station, Macon County, North Carolina

This data set contains measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, PAR density, and rainfall from the Lower Jones Creek Station, Macon County, North Carolina. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and PAR density are measured every 60 seconds with average, minimum, maximum, and discrete top of the hour values saved to the output data table hourly. Wind direction is measured every 60 seconds with the average value saved to the output data table every hour. Hourly rainfall is totalized and a continous 24 hour rainfall value is calculated. Calculations for dew point, heat index, wind chill, and wind vector are calculated hourly and saved to the ouput data table.

Data from: Regional surveys of macrobenthic shelf invertebrate communities in Onslow Bay, North Carolina, U.S.A.

Despite its importance for quantifying ecosystem responses to environmental and anthropogenic drivers, our understanding of spatial heterogeneity in marine communities remains inadequate. Studies in coastal marine benthic habitats are sparse, and predominantly target single higher taxonomic groups. Here we describe macrobenthic marine invertebrate community surveys from 52 localities in Onslow Bay (Beaufort, North Carolina, U.S.A.), over an extensive geographic area (~200 km2). The data consist of 11,467 individuals, 175 species, and 7 phyla. The data include species abundance data for each sample at all localities, and corresponding species lists and locality information. The metadata describe the sampling protocols and localities. The data provided here will facilitate examination of assemblage heterogeneity with regards to spatial and temporal patterns, and depth gradient analyses.

Processed data for the analysis of human mobility changes from COVID-19 lockdown on bird occupancy in North Carolina, USA

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown worldwide provided a unique research opportunity for ecologists to investigate the human-wildlife relationship under abrupt changes in human mobility, also known as Anthropause. Here we chose 15 common non-migratory bird species with different levels of synanthrope and we aimed to compare how human mobility changes could influence the occupancy of fully synanthropic species such as House Sparrow (<em>Passer domesticus</em>) versus casual to tangential synanthropic species such as White-breasted Nuthatch (<em>Sitta carolinensis</em>). We extracted data from the eBird citizen science project during three study periods in the spring and summer of 2020 when human mobility changed unevenly across different counties in North Carolina. We used the COVID-19 Community Mobility reports from Google to examine how community mobility changes towards workplaces, an indicator of overall human movements at the county level, could influence bird occupancy.</p>
