Data from: Disentangling the steps of the infection process responsible for juvenile disease susceptibility

1. Juveniles of diverse host taxa, including vertebrates, invertebrates and plants, are more susceptible to parasitic infections than adults, a phenomenon still poorly understood.

2. To shed light on the mechanisms underlying this host age effect, we investigated its expression during different steps of the infection process of a bacterial parasite of the planktonic crustacean Daphnia. To do so, we infected juvenile and adult Daphnia magna with the bacterium Pasteuria ramosa and monitored parasite development in experiments specific to different steps of the infection process.

3. We did not find an effect of host age on parasite attachment, but found a strong increase in the penetration time of the parasite into hosts with increasing age. Host age at exposure also affected within-host parasite development, which was delayed in old adult D. magna in comparison to young adults and juveniles. Furthermore, parasite clearance was observed only in old adults, suggesting that old hosts have a better immune response than young adults and juveniles.

4. Our results reveal a step-specific effect of host age on disease progression, giving support for different hypotheses explaining high juvenile disease susceptibility. While these mechanisms are likely to work independently from each other, earlier steps of the infection process influence later steps, and thus may respond more readily to selection than later steps.

5. Our results also highlight that clearance can occur both during early parasite establishment and surprisingly at progressed infection phases, an undocumented phenomenon in invertebrates, where late infections are often considered chronic, lasting until host death.

Drake's Steps
The stairs and causeway at Deptford Wharf known as Drake's Steps. Here in 1581 Queen Elizabeth I visited Francis Drake (aboard The Golden Hinde) to bestow his Knighthood. "In 1811 a 90m section of the Royal Victualling Yard's river wall collapsed; the wall was rebuilt to a design by John Rennie in 2 phases, a 240m stretch to the north of the river stairs in 1816–17, a 105m southern stretch in 1818–20. The new wall was built out 5m in front of the old one, using coffer dams and pumping steam engines. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1416598 We think the causeway shows damage from the Blitz - a V1? landed in the river nearby." COLAS A white 1 meter ruler can be seen at the base and corner of the right hand foreshore wall (when looking toward the stairs). 1725 photos taken in June 2020 with a Sony a6000 and processed in Agisoft Metashape. The foreshore was very muddy at the time as there had been fewer boats on the river for several months due to the coronavirus lockdown. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Medieval Steps - Dinan
110 Shots - Panasonic GF7 Dinan - France Processed with Agisoft Photoscan Cute littles steps climbing to an old medieval door. This scene takes place under lots of trees near the Dinan's rempart. Lots of old walls and stones all around, really nice place. This city is quite amazing and a lot of possibilty for scanning. I hope you will like it. fell free to post any comments // Still wondering what display is most liked between lit and shadeless // cute vs reality. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Wooden steps to shallow depths: A new bathymodiolin mussel, Vadumodiolus teredinicola, inhabits shipworm burrows in an ancient submarine forest

Large mussels of the mytilid subfamily Bathymodiolinae are common inhabitants of deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, where gill-borne symbionts allow them to utilize energy-rich compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and methane to support abundant growth. This subfamily also includes smaller symbiont-bearing mussels found on deep-sea wood and organic deposits. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that wood association is ancestral to bathymodiolin evolution. This observation led to the "wooden steps" hypothesis, which proposed that wood and other large organic deposits have acted as evolutionary steppingstones, introducing the progenitors of the modern vent and seep Bathymodiolinae to their remote environments. Although this hypothesis implies an evolutionary trajectory from shallow to deep water, no bathymodiolin species that grows and reproduces at depths less than 100 m has yet been formally described. Here we describe a new bathymodiolin genus and species, Vadumodiolus teredinicola, found growing and reproducing at a depth of 18 m in uninhabited shipworm burrows in the remnants of an ancient submerged bald cypress forest off the coast of Alabama. These results demonstrate that the bathymodiolin radiation has not been limited to deep water and that specific association with wood has led to the successful invasion of both deep and shallow marine environments.
