Como and Phalen lake ChatBot water quality and recreation text survey, 2022 and 2023

We collected data from visitors to two urban lakes in Saint Paul, Minnesota, using a conversational chatbot to assess visitor perception of current lake water quality, trends in water quality over time, and other questions relevant to park managers. Data were collected at Como Lake in 2022 and 2023, and at Lake Phalen in 2023. Signs were installed at three locations around each lake with high pedestrian traffic. Each sign had a hook question (“How many watercraft are on the lake right now? Text the number to XXX-XXX-XXXX”). Visitors who responded to this question initiated a series of optional follow-up questions, using a conversational chatbot run by software that automates the sending and receiving of text messages. Survey questions included asking respondents about their primary purpose for visiting the lake today, how often they have visited the lake in the past 12 months, and whether they perceive that water quality in the lake is improving, getting worse, or remaining about the same. Respondents were asked to provide their ZIP code, used to estimate distance traveled to the lake. Respondents also had the opportunity to opt-in to future data collection via phone or text. An AI language model was then used to process the information and parse and synthesize responses. Unique anonymous identifiers were used to key survey response data.

Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) Metro Area bee lawn assessments and bumble bee survey, 2023

Eighty residential lawns were recruited across the seven-county Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area to take part in a survey of bumble bee species, vegetation and soil characteristics across lawns with differing management regimes. Lawns were selected to capture a range across the urban to rural gradient (based on percent of impervious surface) and household incomes and ethnicity at the Census block group level. Approximately half the lawns were characterized as "traditional" lawns, while half were considered "bee lawns" based on initial plant and bee community data. Three non-residential sites were included in this study: Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area, The Minnesota Bell Museum of Natural History, the University of St. Thomas Stewardship Garden. The Bombus spp. composition was surveyed NON-LETHALLY at each site twice in the summer, with six endangered rusty-patched bumble bees (Bombus affinis) observed in 2023. Each property was also surveyed for plant species composition and soil moisture. Additional soil and site characteristics will accompany this dataset at a later date. Locations of the lawns are jittered randomly to protect the privacy of participating residents in the study.

Historical Birge - Juday Lake Survey - major ions 1900 - 1943

Data collected by Birge, Juday, and collaborators, mostly in north-central Wisconsin, from 1900 through 1943; generally one sampling event per lake during the summer, but on some lakes, especially around Trout Lake Station, several sampling events for several successive years. This data set contains both surface data (depth of zero) and multi-depth data. Note that not all variables were measured on all lakes. Documentation: Johnson, M.D. (1984) Documentation and quality assurance of the computer files of historical water chemistry data from the Wisconsin Northern Highland Lake District (the Birge and Juday data).Wisconsin DNR Technical Report. Note: Values of -99999 in water quality data indicate trace amount of parameter was present. Number of sites: 663 (generally one sampling point per lake; occasionally, several sampling points per lake on multibasin, large lakes). Note: This data set was updated in 2013 to include multi-depth and additional surface data for a large subset of lakes. These additions expanded the number of sites from 605 to 663, and expanded the date range from 1925-1942 to 1900-1943 . Furthermore, 14 lakes in Minnesota were added to the data set contributing additional surface and multi-depth data. Another dataset was added in 2013 collected by Wisconsin limnologists Chauncey Juday and Edward Birge, this data set contains variables that are still commonly used in research. For example, temperature, dissolved carbon dioxide, color, pH, secchi disk, plankton, and silica. However, the data set also includes variables that are not commonly used, for example, crude protein, non-amino nitrogen, ether extract, and total organic and inorganic material. These data are characteristic of water chemistry analysis from the time in which they were compiled (5/31/1915 - 8/29/1938). The Eastern Lake Survey-Phase I (ELS-I), conducted in the fall of 1984, was the first part of a long-term effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency known as the National Surface Water Survey. It was designed to synoptically quantify the acid-base status of surface waters in the United States in areas expected to exhibit low buffering capacity. The effort was in support of the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP). The survey involved a three-month field effort in which 1612 probability sample lakes and 186 special interest lakes in the northeast, southeast, and upper midwest regions of the United States were sampled. Survey of pond habitats and aquatic diversity of Madison, Wisconsin from May to Aug 2019 and 2020 Data Set

1) Urbanization may lead to changes in local richness (alpha diversity) or in community composition (beta diversity), although the direction of change can be challenging to predict. For instance, introduced species may offset the loss of native specialist taxa, leading to no change in alpha diversity in urban areas, but decreased beta diversity (i.e., more homogenous community structure). Alternatively, because urban areas can have low connectivity and high environmental heterogeneity between sites, they may support distinct communities from one another over small geographic distances. 2) Wetlands and ponds provide critical ecosystem services and support diverse communities, making them important systems in which to understand consequences of urbanization. To determine how urban development shapes pond community structure, we surveyed 68 ponds around Madison, Wisconsin, USA, which were classified as urban, greenspace, or rural based on surrounding land use. We evaluated the influence of local abiotic factors, presence of nonnative fishes, and landscape characteristics on alpha diversity of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, and vertebrates. We also analyzed whether surrounding land cover was associated with changes in community composition and/or the presence of specific taxa. 3) We found a 23% decrease in mean richness (alpha diversity) from rural to urban pond sites, and a 15% decrease in richness from rural to urban greenspace pond sites. Among landscape factors, observed pond richness was negatively correlated with adjacent developed land and mowed lawns, as well as greater distances to other waterbodies. Among pond level factors, habitat complexity was associated with increased richness, while the presence of invasive fish was associated with decreased richness. 4) Beta diversity was relatively high for all ponds due to turnover in composition between sites. Annual snow survey, Green Lakes Valley, Niwot Ridge, Colorado, 2013 - ongoing.

Yearly snow surveys were conducted in the Green Lakes Valley in the City of Boulder Watershed at the estimated peak of snowpack in late spring. Over a period of several days, surveying teams (1 to several people) traversed valley slopes measuring snow depth with avalanche probes. Locations of each depth measurement were recorded as waypoints in Garmin hand-held GPS units. Snow depths were recorded on standardized field sheets along with dates, recorder names, waypoint numbers, and comments.

Vegetation Survey on the Virginia Barrier Islands - Species by habitat, 1974

This dataset contains observations by Cheryl McCaffrey during a 1974 mapping of the vegetation on the barrier islands of the Virginia Coast Reserve (McCaffrey, CA, Dueser RD. 1990. Preliminary Vascular Flora for the Virginia Barrier Islands. Va. J. Note, because the primary purpose of this survey was mapping, species are listed if they were observed, but no extraordinary efforts were made to list all species on a particular island. Literature survey of seagrass disturbance-recovery studies up to May 2022

To provide context for the seagrass recovery experiment (SRE) a literature synthesis was conducted on prior studies of seagrass disturbance and recovery. The synthesis provided evidence that 1) less than half (47%) of all seagrass species have been included, 2) were primarily on monospecific meadows of Zostera, 3) where experimental, mostly done on small spatial scales (median = 0.25 m2), and 4) that there is a positive, non-linear relationship between recovery time and disturbance area. Most meadows had some, if not full recovery during the study period suggesting that seagrass meadows are stable across a broad set of conditions.

2017 Hurricane Irma Evacuation Survey Data

<p>Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, an online survey was distributed by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley to collect information on the individual choices of those impacted by the storm in Florida. Collected from October to December 2017, the data includes questions regarding risk perceptions, communications, evacuation decisions, potential usage of the sharing economy in disasters, opinions of evacuation management, and demographic information. The survey was distributed with the assistance of local partners (i.e., transportation agencies, emergency management agencies, local city and county governments, CBOs, and news outlets). Partners were allowed to post the survey using electronic communication methods including but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, agency websites, news websites, email listservs, and alert subscription services. The survey received 1,263 valid responses, of which 921 were completed. Subsequent papers using this data retained 645 cleaned survey responses for discrete choice modeling, based on the respondents' completion of key choice and demographic questions. The survey was incentivized with the chance to win one of five $200 gift cards. The survey questions are included in a separate PDF document. Please note that Q173-Q197 in the survey questions were not asked to respondents and no data was collected.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>We request that those who download the data&nbsp;send a courtesy email to the lead author, Dr. Stephen Wong (swong1392@gmail.com). Detecting local variations across metazoan communities in backreef depressions of Reunion Island (Mascarene Archipelago) through environmental DNA survey

<p>The back-reef depressions, or lagoons, of Reunion Island (western Indian Ocean) host a high abundance of organisms living amongst the coral reefs and are critical sites for artisanal fishing, tourism, and shoreline stability for the island. Over time, increasing degradation of Reunionese reefs has been observed due to overexploitation, beach erosion and eutrophication. Efforts to mitigate the impact of these pressures on aquatic organisms include biodiversity surveys primarily performed through visual censuses that can be logistically complex and may unintentionally overlook organisms. Surveys integrating environmental DNA (eDNA) collections have provided rapid biodiversity assessments, while helping to circumvent some limitations of visual surveys. The present study describes the results of an exploratory eDNA survey, which aims to characterize metazoan communities of four Reunionese lagoons located along the west coast of the island. As eDNA surveys first require deliberate study design and optimization for each new context, we sought to establish a modernized workflow implementing specialized equipment to collect and preserve samples to facilitate future studies in these lagoons. During the austral summer of 2023, samples were pumped directly from surface and bottom depths at each site through self-preserving filters which were then processed for DNA metabarcoding using regions of the 12S ribosomal RNA (12S), small ribosomal subunit 18S (18S) and Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) genes. The survey detected high species richness that varied by site, and in a single collection period, recovered the presence of 60 teleost families and numerous invertebrate taxa, including members of the coral faunal community that are less studied in Reunion. Distinct biological communities were observed at each site, and within a single lagoon, suggesting that these differences are due to site-specific factors (e.g., environmental variables, geographic distance, etc.). Although continued protocol optimization is needed, the present findings demonstrate the successful application of an eDNA-based survey for biodiversity assessment within Reunionese lagoons.</p>

Organic soil surveys across Flanders

<p>This dataset contains geospatial data of organic soils in wetlands and valleys across the Flemish region (Belgium). It is a compilation of several surveys, mainly commissioned by Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos (ANB), Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij (VMM) and Natuurpunt to map the presence of shallow organic soil layers for conservation purposes. Organic layer depth was mapped by pushing a (pvc) rod into the organic ground until it hits a resistance or mineral layer, then recording the depth and the geographical position with a handheld gps.&nbsp;This method allows a quick and cost-effective survey of large shallow carbon stocks. Sustainability in Chemical Education - A Global Young Chemists Survey

<p>In 2020, young chemists of the German Young Chemists' Network (GDCh-JCF) designed a survey to get a snapshot of how their peers perceive the importance of sustainability in chemical education. With the help of the International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN) and the European Young Chemists' Network (EYCN) they were able to reach around 500 young chemists from 46 countries. Roughly half of the responses came from people that represented the German education system. Although the results need to be taken with a grain of salt as stated in the disclaimer (see .pdf document), they paint a picture of a desperate need for more sustainability topics to be covered by chemical education globally, particularly in Germany. More than 90% of young chemists globally call for more detailed coverage of sustainability topics while the current adequacy is only rated as good or better by a quarter of all respondents. A significant portion (&gt;50% inside of Germany and &gt;30% outside of Germany) does not feel prepared to contribute to the sustainability strategy of a company despite &gt;80% rating the sustainability startegy of a company as an important factor for their career choice.</p>

Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-77277-2_18</p> <p>Between 25.01.23 and 08.02.23 students of the University of L&uuml;beck, Germany were invited to fill out an online questionnaire. The acquisition was done by sending an email to the students. No incentive was offered for participation, except to find out at one's own expression at the end of the survey. In addition to the validated questions, this also included questions about gender and study area. All participants agreed to anonymous data collection and publication. Participants were also asked to confirm that they were completing the survey for the first time, otherwise the return was removed from the result set.&nbsp;</p> <p>The result set is formatted as CSV. Questions and identifiers of the data are shown in the first line.</p>
