Data from: Anemia and related nutrient deficiencies after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Objective: To obtain a pooled risk estimate on the long-term impact of anaemia and related nutritional deficiencies in patients receiving Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases were searched to identify English reports published before 16 May 2014. Eligibility criteria: Articles with case numbers >100, follow-up period >12 months, and complete data from both before and after surgery were selected. Outcomes of interest were changes in baseline measurements of proportion of patients with anaemia, by haemoglobin, haematocrit, ferritin, iron, vitamin B12 and folate levels. Data collection and analysis: Two reviewers independently reviewed data and selected six prospective and nine retrospective studies with a total of 5909 patients. A random effect model with inverse variance weighting was used to calculate summary estimates of outcomes at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months postoperatively. Results: Proportion of patients with anaemia was 12.2% at baseline, which, respectively, increased to 20.9% and 25.9% at 12 and 24 months follow-up, consistent with decreases in haemoglobin and haematocrit levels. Although the serum iron level did not change substantially after surgery, the frequency of patients with ferritin deficiency increased from 7.9% at baseline to 13.4% and 23.0% at 12 and 24 months, respectively, postoperation. Vitamin B12 deficiency increased from 2.3% at baseline to 6.5% at 12 months after surgery in those subjects receiving RYGB. There was no obvious increase in folate deficiency. Conclusions: RYGB surgery is associated with an increased risk of anaemia and deficiencies of iron and vitamin B12, but not folate. Ferritin is more sensitive when serum iron level is within normal range.
Data from: Multiple micronutrient status and predictors of anemia in young children aged 12-23 months living in New Delhi, India
Anemia has been identified as a severe public health concern among young children in India, however, information on the prevalence of anemia attributed to micronutrient deficiencies is lacking. We aimed to assess multiple micronutrient status (iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D, folate and vitamin B12) in young Indian children and to investigate the role of these seven micronutrients and other non-nutritional factors on hemoglobin concentrations and anemia. One-hundred and twenty children aged 12 to 23 months were included in a cross-sectional nutritional assessment survey, of which 77 children provided a blood sample. Hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), total body iron, zinc, selenium, retinol binding protein (RBP), folate, vitamin B12 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) were measured, and adjusted for inflammation using C-reactive protein (CRP) and α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), where appropriate. Predictors for hemoglobin and anemia were identified in multiple regression models. Most of the children were classified as anemic, of which 86 to 93% was associated with iron deficiency depending on the indicator applied. Deficiencies of folate (37%), and notably vitamin D (74%) were also common; fewer children were classified with deficiencies of vitamin B12 (29%), zinc (25%), and vitamin A (17%) and selenium deficiency was nearly absent. Multiple micronutrient deficiencies were common with over half (57%) deficient in three or more micronutrients, and less than 10% of children were classified with adequate status for all the micronutrients measured. Iron status was found to be the only nutritional factor statistically significantly inversely associated with anemia (P = 0.003) in multivariate analysis after controlling for sex. A coordinated multi-micronutrient program is urgently needed to combat the co-existing micronutrient deficiencies in these young children to improve micronutrient status and reduce the high burden of childhood anemia.

<p>This MATLAB code is part of the study titled <em>"Joint Image Processing with Learning-Driven Data Representation and Model Behavior for Non-Intrusive Anemia Diagnosis in Pediatric Patients"</em>, which has been accepted for publication in the <em>Journal of Imaging (MDPI)</em>. Data from: Effectiveness of complementary food supplement and dietary counseling on anemia and stunting in children aged 6-23 months in poor areas in Qinghai Province, China: a controlled interventional study
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of dietary counseling and complementary food supplements on anemia and stunting prevalence in children aged 6-23 months. Design: A controlled intervention study with measurements of height and hemoglobin levels, and cross-sectional surveys in August 2012 (baseline) and 2013 and 2014 (end-line). Setting: One intervention and control county in rural Qinghai Province, China. Intervention: Complementary food supplements (containing protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin A, B1, B2, B12, D3, folic acid, iron, zinc, and calcium) and complementary feeding counseling were given in the intervention county. Participants: Caregivers and their children aged 6-23 months. Primary and secondary outcomes measures: The effect of the interventions on anemia (hemoglobin< 110g/L) and stunting (z-score of height-for-age< -2.0) prevalence(controlled for differences between the counties), and infant feeding practices. Results: The surveys were conducted among 1804, 2187, and 2186 child aged 6-23 months in the intervention county in August 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively, and 804, 680 and 790 children in the control county respectively. Between baseline and end-line, anemia prevalence decreased more in the intervention county compared to the control county (71.1% to 47.8% vs 86.3% to 75.3%, respectively; P<0.0001). There was no difference in the decrease in stunting prevalence between the counties (9.7% to 7.1% vs 17.0% to 15.0%; P=0.7954). The proportions of children given iron-rich or -fortified food, introduced (semi-) solid food at 6-8 months, and given food with minimum dietary diversity increased from 43.2% to 88.8% (P<0.0001), 81.4% to 96% (P=0.0470), and 53.0% to 59.8% (P<0.0001), respectively. Conclusions: We found much higher anemia prevalence in poor rural areas of Qinghai Province compared to national data. Community-based complementary food supplements combined with dietary counseling can improve feeding practices and reduce anemia prevalence. Future studies should use longer follow-up to assess the effects on stunting.

Comprehensive genomic analysis identifies a diverse landscape of sideroblastic and non-sideroblastic iron related anemias with novel and pathogenic variants in an iron deficient endemic setting
<p>The history for the 5 CMA cases are as follows:-</p> <p> </p> <p>1. <strong>HMA-2 </strong>:- 0.6 month male child presented with poor feeding and noted to have mild-moderate pallor. CBC showed Hemoglobin 9.0gm/dl, MCV- 58fl, MCH 17.3, MCHC 29, Iron 113 ug/dl, Ferritin 297 ug/l, TSAT-45%, TIBC-297 ug/dl, Hepcidin- 20.3ng/ml. No transfusions received and antenatal and neonatal history uneventful. HPLC (both parents), alpha sequencing normal. Targeted NGS shows a heterozygous VUS in GLRX5 gene along with a VUS in BMP6 gene. WES- Does not add anything further significant.</p> <p> </p> <p>2. <strong>HMA-3 </strong>:- 0.8 month male child with transfusion dependent microcytic hypochromic anemia and neurological developmental delay. Expired at 1 year of age due to secondary infection (acinetobacter and toxoplasmosis). Hb- 6.5, MCV-61.5, MCH-18.3, Iron 45 ug/dl, Ferritin 650. Targeted panel and WES - negative.</p> <p> </p> <p>3. <strong>HMA-4:</strong>- 5 year male child with severe microcytic hypochromic anemia and received just one transfusion outside. Has microcephaly and SNHL. Hb 5, MCV- 56, MCH- 18, MCHC- 23, Iron- 75, Ferritin - 330, TIBC- 290, TSAT- 41%. Targeted NGS and WES show a Homozygous VUS in BMP6 gene (? association?) </p> <p> </p> <p>4. <strong>HMA-6:-</strong> 2 year old male child with moderate microcytic hypochromic anemia and focal seizures. Targeted NGS and WES show a single heterozygous VUS mutation in TF gene and another intrinsic rare variant but reported in pop. Also Bone marrow shows coarse vacuolations in erythroid cells (12%) and 19% RS. Suspicion PMS- But MLPA for mitochondrial genome normal, no deletions. Targeted panel NGS and WES reveal a heterozygous VUS in LARS2 gene (? nature).</p> <p> </p>
