In this article, we challenge the notion that global warming stimulates organic matter min-eralization and increases greenhouse gas emissions in lakes via direct temperature effects. We show that the interactive effects of warming and transparency loss due to eutrophica-tion or browning override effects of atmospheric warming alone. Thermal shielding ena-bles a longer and more stable stratification that results in bottom-water cooling, prolonged anoxia and enhanced carbon preservation in a large proportion of global lakes. These ef-fects are strongest in shallow lakes where an additional burial of 4.5 Tg C y-1 increases current global estimates by 9%. Despite more burial, the net global warming potential of lakes will increase via enhanced methane production, related to prolonged periods of an-oxia, rather than warming. Our understanding of how whole-lake carbon cycling responds to climate change needs revision, as the synergistic influence of warming and transparency loss has much broader ecosystem level functional consequences.

Kuninkaanhauta burial cairn, Eura, Finland
Large bronze age (from 1500 BC to 500 BC in Finland) burial cairn Kuninkaanhauta ("kings tomb") in Eura, Finland. It is the largest burial cairn left in Finland. Width is 36 meters, length 30 meters and height 3 - 4 meters. It has never been excavated. There are some errors in the 3D model processing that resulted holes to appear in the cairn. These are not present in the real site. Salisuonmäki burial cairn No. 35, Rauma, Finland
Iron age (from 500 BC to 1200 AD in Finland) burial cairn number 35 in Salisuonmäki, Rauma, Finland. Cairn length is 31 meters and width varies from 3 to 7 meters. The cairn was excavated in 1980. The structure contains multiple (at least 9) stone rings. Every ring contains one burial. This makes the cairn a tarand grave that are common in Estonia. The whole site contains 70 burial cairns. Tregiffian burial chamber capstone cup mark
This is a large, 25cm cup mark on top of the capstone at Tregiffian burial chamber. It often fills with rain water and is easy to spot. There is a cup mark of similar size directly below on the underside of the capstone. It is thought that this may represent an attempt to cut a hole through the stone, perhaps before its use as a capstone. There are several examples of 'holed stones' in West Penwith. However, the holes do not align perfectly if the intention was to continue cutting a hole perpendicular to the surface. There would have been about a 40% overlap. Perhaps this was realised, ending up with the stone being used for another purpose - the large capstone of this burial chamber.
