Locus of control, Moral Competence, Job Satisfaction and Unethical Workplace Behaviors
<p><span>From the Causal Reasoning Model of Counterproductive Work behaviors, unethical workplace behaviors are a function of cognitive processes. Organizations cannot effectively prevent unethical employee behaviors without knowledge of cognitive antecedents of such behaviors. Towards this end, this dataset focuses on some of the cognitive variables that might play a role in unethical workplace behavior. The data specifically focuses on the facets of locus of control (LOC), moral potency, job satisfaction, and counterproductive work behavior. The data shows that job satisfaction mediates the negative effects of both internal and external LOC on counterproductive work behavior. Moral potency seems to strengthen the negative effects of internal LOC and buffers against the positive effects of facets of external LOC on counterproductive work behavior. </span></p> <p><span>The resulting paper is under consideration for publication in the journal of International Journal of Applied Positive Psychology. </span></p>
Competing Technologies: Determining the Geographical Origin of Strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa) using laboratory based Near-Infrared Spectroscopy compared to a simple portable device
<p><span>The application and development of fast and simple screening methods for the authentication of foods has increased continuously in recent years. A widely used analytical technique is Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy (FT-NIR). Despite the simple application of FT-NIR analysis, the analyses are usually carried out on benchtop devices in the laboratory. However small, inexpensive and mobile NIR devices could be used on-site. Despite the simple use of FT-NIR analysis, the examinations are usually carried out on a stationary benchtop device in a laboratory. However, in order to be able to perform the application directly on site, the application of small, cost-effective and mobile NIR devices for food analysis is crucial. In this study, both, a benchtop NIR instrument and a handheld NIR device with a lower resolution and analyzed wavenumber range were applied for the differentiation of strawberries from different geographical origins. Distinguishing German and non-German strawberries using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) yielded an accuracy of 91.9 % and 84.0 % using the benchtop and the handheld devices, respec-tively. Relevant variables could be assigned to lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. Overall, our study demonstrated for the first time that analyzing the geographical origin of strawberries using NIR spectroscopy is also possible by means of a handheld device.</span></p>

Data from: Trade-offs in lactation and milk intake by competing siblings in a fluctuating environment
Income breeders which forage without their offspring in attendance should adjust nursing frequency and the quantity and composition of milk to prevailing ecological conditions, and increase the quantity or quality of milk transferred if the frequency of nursing visits declines. When milk delivery to a litter is insufficient, sibling competition should skew milk consumption in favor of dominant litter members. We quantified milk nutritional composition and gross energy density, nursing bout durations, per capita milk transfer (kg), and milk transfer rate (g/min) per nursing bout in singletons and twins in a social carnivore, the spotted hyena. In our study population, the energetic cost of lactation is rank dependent and particularly high because large fluctuations in local prey abundance necessitate long-distance foraging, reducing nursing frequency and intensifying sibling competition, more frequently for low-ranking than high-ranking females. Females increased milk gross energy density, driven by fat content, and increased nursing bout durations as nursing frequency declined. Milk transfer increased as social status declined. Females below median rank also increased milk transfer as nursing frequency declined. Milk transfer was independent of nursing frequency in females above median rank and higher for singletons than cubs in twin litters. Dominant siblings achieved significantly higher amounts and rates of milk transfer than their paired subordinate littermates; this bias increased as sibling competition intensified. Our results show how the interplay between ecological and social constraints determines the quality and quantity of milk transferred, and how socially dominant siblings use aggression to skew milk intake in their favor.

The macroecology and evolution of avian competence for Borrelia burgdorferi
<p><b>Aim: </b>Predicting novel reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens would be improved by identifying inter-specific drivers of host competence, the ability to transmit pathogens to new hosts or vectors.<b> </b>Tick-borne pathogens can provide a useful model system, as larvae become infected only when feeding on a competent host during their first bloodmeal. For tick-borne diseases, competence has been best studied for <i>Borrelia burgdorferi </i>sensu lato (<i>Bb</i>sl), which causes Lyme borreliosis. Major reservoirs include several small mammal species, but birds may play an underrecognized role in human risk given their ability to disperse infected ticks across large spatial scales. Here, we provide a global synthesis of the ecological and evolutionary factors that determine the ability of bird species to infect larval ticks with <i>Bb</i>sl.</p> <p><b>Location: </b>Global</p> <p><b>Time period: </b>1983 to 2019</p> <p><b>Major taxa studied: </b>Birds</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>We compiled a dataset of <i>Bb</i>sl competence across 183 bird species and applied meta-analysis, phylogenetic factorization, and boosted regression trees to describe spatial and temporal patterns in competence, characterize its phylogenetic distribution across birds, reconstruct its evolution, and evaluate the trait profiles associated with competent avian species.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>Half of sampled bird species show evidence of competence for <i>Bb</i>sl. Competence displays moderate phylogenetic signal, has evolved multiple times across bird species, and is pronounced in the genus <i>Turdus</i>. Trait-based analyses distinguished competent birds with 80% accuracy and show that such species have low baseline corticosterone, exist on both ends of the pace-of-life continuum, breed and winter at high latitudes, and have broad migratory movements into their breeding range. We use these trait profiles to predict various likely but unsampled competent species, including novel concentrations of avian reservoirs within the Neotropics.</p> <p><b>Main conclusion: </b>Our results can generate new hypotheses for how birds contribute to the dynamics of tick-borne pathogens and help prioritize surveillance of likely but unsampled competent birds. Our findings further emphasize that birds display underrecognized variation in their contributions to enzootic cycles of <i>Bb</i>sl and the broader need to better consider competence in ecological and predictive studies of multi-host pathogens.</p>
Semantic competency as a marker of clinical reasoning performance
<p>Purpose: This study sought to explore the relationship between semantic competence (or dyscompetence) displayed during think alouds performed by resident and attending physicians and clinical reasoning performance.</p> <p>Methods: Internal medicine resident physicians and practicing internists participated in "think-alouds" performed after watching videos of typical presentations of common diseases in internal medicine. The think-alouds were evaluated for the presence of semantic competence and dyscompetence and these results were correlated with clinical reasoning performance. </p> <p>Results: We found that the length of think-aloud was negatively correlated with clinical reasoning performance. Beyond this finding, however, we did not find any other significant correlations between semantic competence or dyscompetence and clinical reasoning performance.</p> <p>Conclusion: While this study did not produce the previously hypothesized findings of correlation between semantic competence and clinical reasoning performance, we discuss the possible implications and areas of future study regarding the relationship between semantic competency and clinical reasoning performance.</p>

Identifying the core components and items to measure health workers' cultural competence in the Ethiopian context
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background: Cultural competence (CC) is a crucial attribute in attaining quality healthcare service outcomes, mitigating malfunctioning practices, and improving patients’ satisfaction. Studies suggested comprehensive CC assessment requires appraising existing CC tools to measure health workers’ CC in the Ethiopian context. Selecting existing CC tools, identifying sub-constructs, pinpointing demographic characteristics, and evaluating items are the study objectives.</p> <p>Methods: 20 cultural competence tools of 20 to 83 items, 1-5 sub-constructs, and 4–10 Likert-Type rating options were identified, to be rated by eight experts in three groups. Consensus based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) and test construction literature are used to develop raters rating codes to compute Inter-Raters Reliability (IRR). The first group of three experts was rated to decide the inclusion of CC tools, factors, and demographic information. The second group of three experts selected six CC tools and 65 items. Two experts in the third group further evaluated the selected items.</p> <p>Results: Reliability for the inclusion of CC tools, factors, and demographic variables were found to be 75%–87%, 50%–93%, and 50%–86% respectively. 13 items that violate test construction principles like absoluteness, endorsement, proneness to multiple interpretation, ambiguity, and double barring were excluded. Cultural skill, cultural knowledge, and cultural awareness are the three most common sub-constructs. Cultural sensitivity, cultural desire, and cultural encounters are the least incorporated factors. Gender, age, language, department, patients encounter, education, and cultural diversity training are demographic variables to assess health workers' CC.</p> <p>Conclusions: Items of CC instruments cover cognitive, affective, and skill domains as prominent dimensions of CC tools. The reviewed tools consist of items that violate test construction principles. To conduct CC assessment in the Ethiopian context, apart from refining and validating selected items, generating additional items is recommended.</p>
