Data from: Discovery of a new ant species of the elusive termitophilous genus Metapone in Singapore (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae), with first detailed description of male genitalia of the genus
A new species of the rare ant genus Metapone – Metapone murphyi – is described based on aged museum material: a single nest series (workers, queens and males) collected from a decayed coconut (tree) stump on Pulau Sakra – previously an offshore island south of mainland Singapore. Workers can be distinguished from other named congeners mainly by the following characters: 1) subpetiolar lamella subrectangular; 2) short subpetiolar edge and roundly obtuse subpetiolar angle; 3) outer margin of posterior subpetiolar face forming a continuous, U-shaped, translucent, laminate carina; 4) subtrapezoidal petiole in dorsal view with extended blunt tooth-like posterolateral corners. Detailed description and illustrations of the male genitalia are given for the first time in the genus. The key to Asian species of Metapone is updated to include the new species.
Making Drug Discovery Data FAIR: The Yawning Gap between Aspiration and Implementation (recording)
<p>Recording from BioITWorld October 2020</p> <p>The FAIRification of data is gaining impetus. However, for drug discovery, the envisaged increased flow of structures and bioactivity into major public databases, such as PubChem, has not happened. Reasons will be reviewed, but a key impediment is that even when supplementary data from journal papers is submitted to open repositories, such as figshare, there is neither push nor pull into PubChem. Ways to ameliorate this major bottleneck will be discussed, including bypassing the entombment of chemistry in PDFs</p> <p> </p>

Data from: Low-coverage, whole-genome sequencing of Artocarpus camansi (Moraceae) for phylogenetic marker development and gene discovery
Premise of the study: We used moderately low-coverage (17×) whole-genome sequencing of Artocarpus camansi (Moraceae) to develop genomic resources for Artocarpus and Moraceae. Methods and Results: A de novo assembly of Illumina short reads (251,378,536 pairs, 2 × 100 bp) accounted for 93% of the predicted genome size. Predicted coding regions were used in a three-way orthology search with published genomes of Morus notabilis and Cannabis sativa. Phylogenetic markers for Moraceae were developed from 333 inferred single-copy exons. Ninety-eight putative MADS-box genes were identified. Analysis of all predicted coding regions resulted in preliminary annotation of 49,089 genes. An analysis of synonymous substitutions for pairs of orthologs (Ks analysis) in M. notabilis and A. camansi strongly suggested a lineage-specific whole-genome duplication in Artocarpus. Conclusions: This study substantially increases the genomic resources available for Artocarpus and Moraceae and demonstrates the value of low-coverage de novo assemblies for nonmodel organisms with moderately large genomes.
Data from: De novo discovery and multiplexed amplification of microsatellite markers for black alder (Alnus glutinosa) and related species using SSR-enriched shotgun pyrosequencing.
Recent developments in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics analyses provide an unprecedented opportunity for cost and time effective high quality microsatellite marker discovery in non-model organisms for which no genomic information is available. Here, we use shotgun pyrosequencing of a microsatellite-enriched library to develop, for the first time, microsatellite markers for Alnus glutinosa, a keystone tree species of European riparian woodland communities. From a total of 17,855 short sequences, we identified 590 perfect microsatellites from which 392 had designed primers. A subset of 48 loci were tested for amplification, twelve of which were polymorphic in A. glutinosa. These twelve loci were successfully co-amplified in a single multiplex PCR experiment and validated for population genetics applications. In addition, ten and eight of these microsatellites were found to be transferable to the related A. incana and A. cordata species. The developed multiplex of 12 microsatellite markers therefore provides new opportunities for experimental evolutionary and forest genetics research in Alnus.
Data from: High-throughput screening of inorganic compounds for dielectric and optical properties to enable the discovery of novel materials
Dielectrics are an important class of materials that are ubiquitous in modern electronic applications. Even though their properties are important for the performance of devices, the number of compounds with known dielectric constant is on the order of a few hundred. Here, we use Density Functional Perturbation Theory as a way to screen for the dielectric constant and refractive index of materials in a fast and computationally efficient way. Our results form the largest database to date, containing the full dielectric tensor for 1,056 compounds. Details regarding the computational methodology and technical validation are presented along with the format of our publicly available data. In addition, we integrate our dataset with the Materials Project allowing users easy access to material properties. Finally, we explain how our dataset and calculation methodology can be used in the search for novel dielectric compounds.
