gmap - qgis training material: Ingenii Basin (moon)

This dataset part of the Geology and Planetary Mapping Winter School 2022 featuring Ingenii Basin as a study area.
Ingenii Basin is located on the lunar farside centred at 33.7°S 163.5°E within the South Pole-Aitken basin. The floor of Ingenii Basin is filled with mare materials with the basin having a diameter of 282 km.
We compiled a beginners – intermediate level training package for the area. The package includes the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Wide Angle Camera (WAC) global mosaic (Speyerer et al., 2011) as a basemap, the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) and SELenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) Kaguya merged lunar digital elevation model (DEM) (Barker et al., 2016) and spectral data in the form of a clementine Ultraviolet/Visible (UVVIS) warped color ratio mosaic (Lucey et al., 2000). The data is cut to the area of interest and a training project is set up for QGIS.

The training package is designed as a group exercise with four adjacent tiles covering the entirety of Ingenii basin. For beginners the aim is to create a low scale map of the area where the basin rim is distinguished from the basin floor and mare unit as well as detecting smaller craters that exist in the area. These units should then be put in a stratigraphic relationship based on superposition, degradation state and embayment. For intermediate mappers this task can be extended to include the swirl features and finding potential areas for crater size frequency distribution measurement to determine absolute ages for a more detailed stratigraphy.

Translated Emission Pathways (TEPs): Long-Term Simulations of COVID-19 CO2 Emissions and Thermosteric Sea Level Rise Projections - Supplementary Materials

Supplementary materials for Gonzalez, A. R., & Lin, T. (2022). Translated Emission Pathways (TEPs): Long-Term Simulations of COVID-19 CO2 Emissions and Thermosteric Sea Level Rise Projections. Earth's Future. In Press.

Summary: This study introduces climate science to a broader audience by presenting an accessible research framework and environmental data related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A series of translated emission pathways (TEPs) were constructed based on the CO2 emission patterns from the various phases of COVID-19 response. In addition to resembling the forcing scenarios used within climate research, a thermosteric sea level rise analysis was incorporated to further emphasize the environmental benefits that can be obtained from long-term sustainability. As a promising start for including the general public in climate change discussion, this research promotes collective environmental action that mirrors the recommendations of the scientific community.

High-resolution maps of material stock and population in Germany from 1985 to 2018

Global societal material stocks such as buildings and infrastructure accumulated rapidly within recent decades, along with population growth. Material stocks constitute the physical basis of most socio-economic activities and services, such as mobility, housing, health, or education. The dynamics of stock growth, and its relation to the population that demands those services, is an essential indicator for long-term societal resource use and patterns of emissions. The creation of societal material stock creates path dependencies for future resource use, with an important impact on how the transformation towards sustainable societies can succeed.

This dataset features detailed maps of material stock and population for Germany on a 30m grid. The data is based on recent maps of material stock and building volume (compare to Haberl et al. 2021, doi: 10.1021/acs.est.0c05642), recent and historic census data, and a time series of Landsat TM, ETM+, and OLI Earth Observation data.

Temporal extent

The data contains annual maps from 1985 to 2018.

Data format and units

Per German federal state, the data come in tiles of 30x30km. The projection is EPSG:3035. The images are compressed GeoTiff files (*.tif). There is a mosaic in GDAL Virtual format (*.vrt), which can readily be opened in most Geographic Information Systems. Please consider the generation of image pyramids before using *.vrt files.

All image data has 34 bands, where band 1 is data for 1985, and band 34 is data for 2018.

The dataset features

population (Scaled by 100 to reduce data storage size. It is, however, included here for completeness.

Further information

For further information, please see the publication or contact Franz Schug (fschug@wisc.edu). Supplementary material for "Patterns of high-flying insect abundance are shaped by landscape type and abiotic conditions"

Abstract

Insects are of increasing conservation concern as a severe decline of both biomass and biodiversity have been reported. At the same time, data on where and when they occur in the airspace is still sparse, and we currently do not know whether their density is linked to the type of landscape above which they occur. Here, we combine data of high-flying insect abundance from six locations across Switzerland representing rural, urban and mountainous landscapes, which was recorded using vertical-looking radar devices. We analysed the abundance of high-flying insects in relation to meteorological factors, daytime, and type of landscape. Air pressure was positively related to insect abundance, wind speed showed an optimum, and temperature and wind direction did not show a clear relationship. Mountainous landscapes showed a higher insect abundance than the other two landscape types. Insect abundance increased in the morning, decreased in the afternoon, had a peak after sunset, and then declined again, though the extent of this general pattern slightly differed between landscape types. We conclude that the abundance of high-flying insects is not only related to abiotic parameters, but also to the type of landscapes. Thus, conservation measures implemented on the ground should start to also account for the needs of high-flying insects.
