Statistically downscaled future precipitation for the Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico
This dataset contains climate predictions that serve as the basis for the analysis in Ramseyer et al. (2019), which projected a trend toward drier conditions in eastern Puerto Rico during the mid- and late-21st century. The analysis was informed by computing nine atmospheric variables, which had been shown by previous research to related to precipitation in Puerto Rico (Ramseyer and Mote 2016) from four GCMs. These nine variables were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the binary occurrence of a wet (>= 5 mm of precipitation) versus dry (<5 mm) day using in-situ daily precipitation observations from El Verde Field Station in northeast Puerto Rico. The nine atmospheric variables used to train the ANN were: 1000- 850-, 700-, and 500-hPa daily specific humidity, 1000–700-hPa bulk wind shear (BWS), the Gálvez-Davison Index (GDI), and the GDI's three component terms (the column buoyancy index, mid-level warming index, and a trade-wind inversion index). These same nine variables were then extracted on a daily basis from four GCMs for the eastern Caribbean early rainfall season (April-July) between 2041-2060 and 2081-2100, and fed through the ANN. These data are the daily predicted values of wet (1) or dry (0) conditions for each of the four GCMs in the ensemble. Because ERS total precipitation at El Verde is strongly correlated with the percentage of ERS dry days (R2=0.95 for years with <10% missing data), the GCM predictions were used to estimate future ERS precipitation using the following formula: ERS precipitation (mm) = 3373-37.6*(ERS dry-day percentage) Applying this formula to each of the GCM dry-day projections yielded an ensemble mean ERS precipitation total of 771 mm by 2041-2060 and 974 mm by 2081-2100. Precipitation data for A1 chart recorder, 1952 - 1964.
Precipitation data were collected from a ridgetop climate station east of Niwot Ridge (A1 at 2195 m) throughout the year using chart recorders. Initially, instrumentation consisted of an 8-inch metal rain gauge with the receiving rim about 3 feet above the ground and measurements were made on an approximately weekly basis. More recently, instrumentation consisted of a Fergusson-type weighing rain gauge. Precipitation was caught in a bucket containing ethylene glycol (to melt snow) and light oil (to prevent evaporation). As the weight of the bucket increased, the pen moved up via a spring mechanism and recorded on a rotating chart. Precipitation was recorded on a continuous basis.
Couloir air temperature and precipitation data for Niwot Ridge and Kiowa Peak, 1992 - 1993.
Air temperature and precipitation were measured on a biweekly basis, during the summer months, within couloirs above the Green Lakes and Isabelle Valleys. Tru-Chek wedge shaped rain gauges were mounted on the south side of wooden stakes so that the orifice was approximately 52 cm above the surface. The water depth (mm) in the gauge was recorded. On subsequent visits the new water depth was recorded and the reset water depth was recorded. Gauges contained 3-4 mm of oil to retard evaporation, and were emptied (reset) when water depth exceeded 50 mm or when insect accumulations exceeded 10 mm. Taylor Instruments Min-Max thermometers were mounted approximately 50 cm above ground on the north side of the same stakes, sheltered by tin and plastic shields. The current time, current temperature, maximum and minimum air temperature were recorded. Minimum and maximum air temperature markers were reset to the current temperature. Proximity to the surface and inadequate shielding resulted in anomalously high temperature readings, particularly on sunny days.
Tree seedling germination, precipitation index, and SWE data for subalpine forest, 1940-2010
Annual germination dates for over 450 Engelmann spruce and over 500 subalpine fir seedlings collected across a complex topographic-moisture gradient were compared to climate variability in the Colorado Front Range. This dataset contains the SPEI (standardized-evaporation precipitation index) and snow-water equivalent (SWE) data from 1940 to 2010 used in the study as well as the number of seedlings establishing each year from 1940 to 2010 by species.

SBC LTER: Land: Hydrology: Daily precipitation from Santa Barbara County Flood Control (Public Works Department)
These daily total precipitation data represent legacy data obtained by SBC LTER from the the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District for several coastal watersheds draining into the Santa Barbara Channel (California, USA). Starting in 2001, SBC also began archive high-frequency data from County stations with active data loggers which are available in other SBC data packages. These data were collected in accordance with current industry standards. The data are contained in 3 tables, for stations with active data loggers and tipping gauges, active stations with other types of gauges, and inactive stations. Only data collected with tipping gauges and data loggers can be interpolated to to the resolution required by SBC's research objectives, and so only this data table will be updated (annually, at the end of the water year).

These daily total precipitation data represent reference material for the SBC LTER samplilng area, and are for general use. Data were collected by the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District at the station UCSB200, starting in 1951. Dataset will be updated annually, for the previous water-year.
