Stompie Tank
A decommissioned Soviet-built T-34-85 medium tank, now located on the corner of Mandela Way and Page's Walk in Bermondsey, London. The tank was placed here by the owner who failed to get planning permission for the plot of land, so aimed the tank's turrent at the local council offices. The tank is currently (June 2020) painted blue as a thank you to the staff of the NHS fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. Free surface evolution from numerical wave tank simulations - Experiment W2N5D5
<p>An ensemble of two-dimensional numerical wave tank (NWT) simulations of breaking and non-breaking wave packets. The NWT uses the Gerris software package, a two-phase Navier-Stokes solver that utilises the volume-of-fluid method and explicitly models viscosity and surface tension effects. It is configured in non-dimensional coordinates scaled by the length and time characteristics of a deep-water wave with wavelength 1 m. This dataset contains simulations from experiment W2N5D5 (wind forcing speed equal to 2 times the wave speed, chirped wave packet with 5 waves in the packet signal, deep water) and forms part of an ensemble of experiments available <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.12797829" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. Temperature Stratification in a Cryogenic Fuel Tank
A reduced dynamical model describing temperature stratification effects driven by natural convection in a liquid hydrogen cryogenic fuel tank has been developed. It accounts for cryogenic propellant loading, storage, and unloading in the conditions of normal, increased, and micro- gravity. The model involves multiple horizontal control volumes in both liquid and ullage spaces. Temperature and velocity boundary layers at the tank walls are taken into account by using correlation relations. Heat exchange involving the tank wall is considered by means of the lumped-parameter method. By employing basic conservation laws, the model takes into consideration the major multi-phase mass and energy exchange processes involved, such as condensation-evaporation of the hydrogen, as well as flows of hydrogen liquid and vapor in the presence of pressurizing helium gas. The model involves a liquid hydrogen feed line and a tank ullage vent valve for pressure control. The temperature stratification effects are investigated, including in the presence of vent valve oscillations. A simulation of temperature stratification effects in a generic cryogenic tank has been implemented in Matlab and results are presented for various tank conditions.
