Water level response in wells to dynamic shaking in confining unconsolidated sediments: a laboratory study

<p class="15"><span>This article focuses on laboratory experiments designed to investigate the influence of dynamic shaking on water level fluctuation in wells of unconsolidated sediments. A large flume filled with natural sandy sediments was subjected to horizontal dynamic loading at different frequencies (0.5-15Hz) and accelerations (0.1g, 0.15g, 0.25g and 0.5g), generated by a shaking table. Thus, the change in characteristics of the water and saturated sediments were investigated, including how water level and hydraulic properties changed over time, are of significant interest. A range of water level changes following the oscillating pore pressure for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic (flowing) conditions were observed: oscillation, step-rise, step-rise with oscillation, and step-drop with oscillation, similar to those observed in nature after earthquakes. We find that water level declines occur when the imposed frequency is less than 2Hz, while the acceleration has weak correlation on the water level change when it is less than 0.5g. Sinusoidal wave propagation reduces hydraulic conductivity first sharply which then stabilizes at a constant value with a slight increase.  Heterogeneous consolidation, mechanical resonance, compaction, dilation, and re-packing of the grain structure may constitute a physically plausible mechanism for water level fluctuations and hydraulic parameters adjustment. Data from: Video education versus face-to-face education on inhaler technique for patients with well-controlled or partly-controlled asthma: a phase IV, open-label, non-inferiority, multicenter, randomized, controlled trial

Background: Education on inhaler technique is critical for effective asthma treatment. However, traditionally used face-to-face education is a time-consuming, costly, and often laborious. The current study evaluated the efficacy of a newly developed video-based inhaler technique education method. Methods: A total of 184 subjects with well-controlled or partly-controlled asthma were enrolled from 12 hospitals in South Korea from 30 November 2015 to 01 June 2016. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups in a 1:1 ratio; a control group that received face-to-face education, and an study group that received video education. All subjects received fluticasone propionate plus salmeterol xinafoate (Fluterol® 250/50 inhalation capsules) for 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure was forced expiratory volume in the 1st second (FEV1) at 12 weeks. The secondary outcome measures were change in FEV1 at 4 weeks, change in asthma control test (ACT) score, and changes in various inhaler technique parameters. These measures were assessed with a non-inferiority margin of 10% between the control group and the study group. Results: FEV1 was significantly improved at 12 weeks in the control group and the study group. After adjustment, FEV1 improvement was not significantly inferior in the study group compared to the control group. The secondary outcome measures, including change in FEV1 at 4 weeks, ACT score, and various parameters pertaining to inhaler technique and satisfaction at 4 and 12 weeks did differ not significantly in the two groups. In subgroup analysis of elderly subjects and subjects with well-controlled asthma, FEV1 was significantly improved at 12 weeks in the study group but not the control group. Conclusion: The newly developed video education technique investigated functioned as a suitable substitute for face-to-face education on inhaler technique (dry powder inhalation capsule) in patients with stable asthma, particularly in elderly patients and patients with well-controlled asthma.

Petzenkirchen | Austria | Roman well

# Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum | PhD project The Roman rural site of *Petzenkirchen* in Lower Austria is located on the right bank of the river Erlauf – archaeological excavations at the village district *Breiteneich* revealed features and finds that can be assigned to a Roman *villa rustica* located in the hinterland of the Danube limes/*ripa*. Several wells were found at the site, the one presented here is a shaft well built of unhewn natural stones (stratigraphic unit SE 691) with a simple bottom. Ritual site - holy well - Killaan - GA086-150003

Some 35m NE of a church (GA086-150001-) and 110m SW of another holy well (GA086-149----). A natural spring well, dry at the time of visit, enclosed by a rectangular drystone wall (N-S 3.5, E-W 2.65m) opening to S. A small enclosure (N-S 4.8m, E-W 2.95m), similarly defined, adjoins it on E side. This is probably the well mentioned in OS letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 605-6) as being 'near the old church'. The current model is generated using Huawei phones and can take 90 photos. One 4K UV is used in material. In the new generation of engines (such as UE5), it is recommended to set the AO map to 0.5 or deprecated. AO maps and CU maps facilitate secondary creation in the mapping software.
