Hoedjiespunt Middle Stone Age Dataset, Western Cape, South Africa

<p>This Middle Stone Age archaeological dataset from Hoedjiespunt 1 was collected in 2011 by a team from the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology of the University of T&uuml;bingen (Germany) headed by Nicholas J. Conard. South African and European researchers collaborated on this project, with John E. Parkington, Katherine Kyriacou, Deano Stynder, Graham Avery, and Chantal Tribolo making substantial contributions. The site is located within the property of Transnet National Ports Authority in the municipality of Saldanha, Western Cape, South Africa.</p> <p>The locality of Hoedjiespunt 1 was well known as a paleontological site since at least the 1990s, when the site yielded several important Middle Pleistocene hominin remains dated between 200,000 and 350,000 years. The paleontological site also yielded a well preserved assemblage of fauna, including terrestrial and marine mammals, shellfish and ostrich eggshell. The excavators interpreted the accumulation of these finds as the remains of a hyena den. Cultural remains such as lithic artifacts were absent from the paleontological site, which is situated immediately below the archaeological site.</p> <p>The 2011 field work at the archaeological site of Hoedjiespunt 1 took place with the help of students from the universities of T&uuml;bingen and Cape Town. The datasets are predominantly in English (with some parts in German) and include field data in the MAIN table. Further analytical data for several classes of artifacts include: LITHICS, FAUNA, OCHRE, and BUCKETS.</p> <p>All of the archaeological materials collected in 2011 are curated by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Cape Town in Rondebosch, South Africa. Funding for this research came mainly from the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the University of T&uuml;bingen. Dataset of "Molecular Dynamics Simulations Unveil the Aggregation Patterns and Salting out of Polyarginines at Zwitterionic POPC Bilayers in Solutions of Various Ionic Strengths"

<p>Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for a series of model cell-penetrating peptides (in particular nona-arginines) in aqueous solutions, in contact with model phosphocholine (POPC) membranes in conditions of different ionic strengths. The unusual aggregation properties of peptides at model lipid bilayers are analyzed and different sizes and lifetimes of aggregates are presented.<br>This dataset contains molecular dynamics simulation data with trajectories, input files, and topology files for all studied systems. They contain low peptide concentration in water, low NaCl concentration, high NaCl concentration, low CaCl2 concentration, and high CaCl2 concentration.<br>In addition to low peptide concentration, high peptide concentration in water, low NaCl concentration, high NaCl concentration, low CaCl2 concentration, and high CaCl2 concentration are also studied.</p>

Genome evolution and introgression in the New Zealand mud snails Potamopyrgus estuarinus and Potamopyrgus kaitunuparaoa

<p>We have sequenced, assembled, and analyzed the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes and transcriptomes of <i>Potamopyrgus estuarinus</i> and <i>Potamopyrgus kaitunuparaoa</i>, two prosobranch snail species native to New Zealand that together span the continuum from estuary to freshwater.<i> </i>These two species are the closest known relatives of the freshwater species <i>P. antipodarum—</i>a model for studying the evolution of sex, host-parasite coevolution, and biological invasiveness—and thus provide key evolutionary context for understanding its unusual biology. The <i>P. estuarinus</i> and <i>P. kaitunuparaoa </i>genomes are very similar in size and overall gene content. Comparative analyses of genome content indicate that these two species harbor a near-identical set of genes involved in meiosis and sperm functions, including seven genes with meiosis-specific functions. These results are consistent with obligate sexual reproduction in these two species and provide a framework for future analyses of <i>P. antipodarum—</i>a species comprising both obligately sexual and obligately asexual lineages, each separately derived from a sexual ancestor. Genome-wide multigene phylogenetic analyses indicate that <i>P. kaitunuparaoa</i> is likely the closest relative to <i>P. antipodarum. </i>We nevertheless show that there has been considerable introgression between <i>P. estuarinus</i> and <i>P. kaitunuparaoa.</i> That introgression does not extend to the mitochondrial genome, which appears to serve as a barrier to hybridization between <i>P. estuarinus </i>and <i>P. kaitunuparaoa.</i> Nuclear-encoded genes whose products function in joint mitochondrial-nuclear enzyme complexes exhibit similar patterns of non-introgression, indicating that incompatibilities between the mitochondrial and the nuclear genome may have prevented more extensive gene flow between these two species.<i>&nbsp;</i>&nbsp;</p>

Antigen-specific CD4+ T cells exhibit distinct transcriptional phenotypes in the lymph node and blood following vaccination in humans

<p><strong>Abstract:&nbsp;</strong><br>SARS-CoV-2 infection and mRNA vaccination induce robust CD4+ T cell responses that are critical for the development of protective immunity. Here, we evaluated spike-specific CD4+ T cells in the blood and draining lymph node (dLN) of human subjects following BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination using single-cell transcriptomics. We analyze multiple spike-specific CD4+ T cell clonotypes, including novel clonotypes we define here using Trex, a new deep learning-based reverse epitope mapping method integrating single-cell T cell receptor (TCR) sequencing and transcriptomics to predict antigen-specificity. Human dLN spike-specific T follicular helper cells (TFH) exhibited distinct phenotypes, including germinal center (GC)-TFH and IL-10+ TFH, that varied over time during the GC response. Paired TCR clonotype analysis revealed tissue-specific segregation of circulating and dLN clonotypes, despite numerous spike-specific clonotypes in each compartment. Analysis of a separate SARS-CoV-2 infection cohort revealed circulating spike-specific CD4+ T cell profiles distinct from those found following BNT162b2 vaccination. FixMe: An Incremental Lightweight Method for Vulnerability Data Collection for Security Patch Prediction

This open-source tool streamlines the process of gathering vulnerability records from the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database through an incremental approach. By embracing an incremental methodology, we expedite the acquisition of data, ensuring the inclusion of newly identified vulnerabilities and their corresponding patch pairs. Instructional Design Models Score Ranking

<p>Here we present selected 17 instructional design models (IDMs) from our previous study (Cajnko, M. M., Pavlin, M., Likozar, B., Vasilakis, C., Tsovou, S., Chaundry, S. R., Kapal, D., van Leeuwen, M., Miloshevski, V., Toman, Y., Deniz, B., Şensoy Mercan, N., Pavitola, L., Memmedova, S., Verdiyeva, L., Sarsar, F., &amp; Andi&ccedil; &Ccedil;akır, &Ouml;. (2024). Instructional Design Models [Data set]. Zenodo. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10900874) that were quantitatively evaluated by 20 experts from different countries (Azerbaijan, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and T&uuml;rkiye) according to their suitability for the use in the engineering education. Evaluation was performed based on 12 statements, where each statement was quantitatively evaluated with values from 0 to 3 (0: Absolutely not suitable; 1: Partially suitable structure; 2: Moderately suitable structure; 3: Suitable structure), resulting in the total score of 36 for each model. The 12 statements were:&nbsp;</p> <p>1. Suitability for engineering education;<br>2. Suitability for virtual laboratories studies;<br>3. Suitability for technology integration;<br>4. Suitability for project-based work;<br>5. Suitability for active learning strategies;<br>6. Suitability for students with any disability;<br>7. Suitability for interdisciplinary design;<br>8. Suitability for cross-cultural practices;<br>9. Suitability for student feedback;<br>10. Suitability for instructor feedback;<br>11. Suitability for assessment and evaluation;<br>12. Suitability for reusability.</p> <p>The preliminary score of each IDM was obtained by averaging the scores of 20 experts and the standard deviation was calculated. Next, the scores of each IDM that lied outside of the average score &plusmn; 2*standard deviation was eliminated and the new average value was calculated. This process was repeated until all the remaining scores lied withing average score &plusmn; 2*standard deviation. Exploring the total cost of whole fresh, fresh-cut and pre-cooked vegetables

<p>Abstract. Purpose: The food industry should evolve towards new business models which take into account the damage cost in decision making, considering the impact that its products generate on the natural and human environment. Hence, the present study aims to calculate the damage cost caused by the production of whole fresh (as average of potatoes, aubergines, and broccoli), and processed vegetables (fresh-cut and pre-cooked). Methods: The environmental life cycle approach was carried out per kilogram of assessed products (from cradle to the entrance of the market). The foreground Life Cycle Inventory was obtained from engineering procurement and construction projects of the whole fresh and processed vegetables industries. The Ecoinvent 3.8 and Agribalyse 3.0.1 databases were used for the background inventory. The ReCiPe 2016 method was used with a hierarchical perspective, evaluating eighteen midpoint categories as well as the endpoint categories (human health, ecosystems, and resources). The monetisation of these environmental impacts was then calculated using the endpoint monetisation factors developed by Ponsioen et al. (Monetisa- tion of sustainability impacts of food production and consumption. Wageningen Economic Research, Wageningen, 2020) for each product. It should be noted that this study does not include a comparative assessment. This study does not intend to compare the results for the three vegetable groups. Results and discussion: The damage costs were 0.16 &euro;/kg for whole fresh vegetables, 0.37 &euro;/kg for fresh-cut vegetables and 0.41 &euro;/kg for pre-cooked vegetables. The agricultural production stage contributed most to these total damage costs due to the impact produced on land use and global warming in midpoint categories and human health and ecosystems in endpoint categories. In addition, the damage cost due to fossil resource scarcity (midpoint) and resource scarcity (endpoint) was mainly caused by the plastic packaging of fresh-cut and pre-cooked vegetables. The total cost was 1.02 &euro;/kg for whole fresh vegetables, 2.99 &euro;/kg for fresh-cut vegetables, and 3.43 &euro;/kg for pre-cooked vegetables. Conclusions: These results suggest that some efforts should be made to reduce both environmental impacts and damage costs. For instance, to improve agricultural production, special attention should be paid to fertilisation and water consumption. Additionally, new packaging options should be explored as well as the inclusion of renewable sources in the electricity grid, and finally, on transporting the finished products to the market, by using trucks that run on cleaner fuels.</p>

Meta-analysis and gender classification of 914 national and international surveys in six European countries (2000-2023)

Gender codification of 412 national (general) and European Parliament elections in six European countries (2003-2021)

<p>This dataset has been produced by applying the Manifesto Gender Analysis (MGA) codebook to 412 national (general) and European Parliament elections in the six countries participating in the UNTWIST project (Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK) from 2003 to 2021.</p> <p>&nbsp;The Manifesto Gender Analysis coding procedure, developed by WP4 of the UNTWIST consortium, aims to analyse gender-related content in party manifestos. It relies on existing manifestos collected by MARPOR and EM projects from 2003-2021 in six national contexts: Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The process involves splitting manifestos into quasi-sentences, coding them based on a scheme inspired by previous projects and feminist typology, and completing an expert survey. This method ensures comprehensive analysis and potential scalability through computational methods.&nbsp;</p> <p>The coding procedure involves a series of essential steps, divided in two main activities: the classification of manifestos&rsquo; quasi-sentences, and the completion of a survey dedicated to more general concepts which can be gauged by evaluating the content of the entire documents. In the latter case, then, the unit of measure of each coder consists in the manifesto document, whereas in the former the units of measure are quasi-sentences - i.e., arguments denoting a verbal expression of a political idea or issue. Coders are instructed to split sentences containing multiple arguments into quasi-sentences and ensure that each quasi-sentence encapsulates a single political idea or issue.&nbsp;</p> <p>Once the manifestos are split into said units, coders classify the arguments following the MGA coding scheme. The coding scheme (MGA) consists of 5 domains and 25 coding categories, covering various aspects of gender-related issues. Each domain includes an "other" category for relevant statements that do not fit precisely into the defined categories. Apart from coding categories related to specific themes, the coding scheme then includes additional dimensions. The classification process consists of seven steps: (1) assessing whether the quasi-sentence addresses gender-related issues, (2) defining both the domain and coding category, (3) determining whether the quasi-sentence refers to a specific recipient or group based on gender and/or sexual orientation, (4) evaluating intersectionality, (5)<strong> </strong>assigning the sentiment or connotation, (6) determining if it's related to a goal, issue, or policy, and (7) characterising the policy if applicable.</p> <p>After completing the classification of the quasi-sentences in a given manifesto, coders fill in a survey for each manifesto document. The surveys provide information that cannot be directly inferred from the quasi-sentences, focusing on the gender ontology of a manifesto, the degree to which a manifesto entails a binary conception of sexes, the extent to which a manifesto promotes a patriarchal conception of the society, and how much a manifesto promotes heterosexuality as the only normal and socially acceptable sexual orientation of individuals. While the last four characteristics are gauged relying on quasi-interval measures (scales ranging from 0 to 10), the first one, gender ontology, consists in a categorical variable which distinguishes between manifestos with an essentialist ontology &ndash; gender and sex are the same and inseparable &ndash;, a constructivist ontology &ndash; biological sex is mediated through social construction of femininity and masculinity &ndash;, and other or undefined ontologies.</p>

Dataset of "Glue-assisted Exfoliation of Two-dimensional Sulfur-rich Niobium Thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) for Sulfur-equivalent Electrode Study in Lithium Storage"

<p>Two-dimensional (2D) layered thiophosphates have garnered attention for advanced batteries due to their open ionic diffusion channels, high capacity, and unique catalytic properties. However, their potential in energy storage applications remains largely unexplored. In this study, we report for the first time a 2D transition metal thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) with high sulfur content. Nb4P2S21, synthesized via chemical vapor transport (CVT), is treated as a sulfur-equivalent material with better conductivity than sulfur, suitable for high-capacity lithium storage. The bulk material can be delaminated into high-quality nanoplates via glue-assisted grinding exfoliation, both displaying a layered quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) morphology, which shortens the ion diffusion path and promises enhanced rate performance compared to larger lateral 2D materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Nb4P2S21 has a direct bandgap of 1.64 eV (HSE06 method), with exfoliated counterparts showing near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence at 755 nm, broadening potential applications to NIR-based devices. By tuning the working voltage window for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and controlling lithiation product formation, the material exhibits distinct electrochemical characteristics at 0 ~ 2.6 V, 0.5 ~ 2.6 V, 1.0 ~ 2.6 V, and 1.5 ~ 2.6 V. However, sulfur-rich electrodes in carbonate electrolytes demonstrate limited electrochemical potential due to polysulfide formation, leading to detrimental side reactions with carbonate-based electrolytes. Transitioning to ether-based electrolytes improves the initial reversible capacity and Coulombic efficiency of Nb4P2S21 by stabilizing the formed polysulfides. Despite this improvement, the material still mirrors the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries, diminishing active sulfur and undermining battery integrity. Further EDS and TOF-SIMS analyses of post-cycled electrode materials show significant sulfur loss and precipitation within the electrodes, exacerbating the shuttle effect and causing battery failure. Implementing strategies used in lithium-sulfur batteries, such as introducing polar host catalysts, could enhance the potential of these materials.</p>

Cross cultural tears: A systematic investigation of the interpersonal effects of emotional crying across different cultural backgrounds

<p>The present project wants to examine the importance of emotional crying as an attachment behaviour and its fundamental role across a number of diverse cultures.</p> <p>Emotional tears are uniquely human and have fascinated scholars across several decades (Vingerhoets, 2013). Some researchers argue that tearful crying played a significant role in the evolution of humankind with regard to social development and solidarity (Walter, 2006). Recent years have seen an increased interest in exploring the interpersonal effects of human tears (see Gračanin, Bylsma, &amp; Vingerhoets, 2018 for a review), with findings that emotional tears foster approach or support behavior (Gračanin, Krahmer, Rinck, &amp; Vingerhoets, 2018) and crying individuals being evaluated as more communal (e.g., Zickfeld, van de Ven, Schubert, &amp; Vingerhoets, 2018). These findings generally fit the hypothesis that emotional tears constitute a social act, promote social bonding and fulfill an attachment function (Nelson, 2005; Bowlby, 1982; Gračanin, Bylsma, et al., 2018; Murube, Murube, &amp; Murube, 1999; Radcliffe-Brown, 1922; Vingerhoets, 2013). <p><span>These data list individual non-native insect species established in nine regions around the globe (New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Ogasawara, Europe, Great Britain, North America (north of Mexico), Hawaii, Galapagos, Chile and South Africa). Radar-derived rainfall event characteristics and ERA5 parameters

<p>Contains interpolated time series of areal radar variables from 01/01/2010 to &nbsp;31/12/2020 for 15 operational radars (refer to radar_codes.txt) for specific sites, dataset of clustered rainfall events over all radar sites, and mean ERA5 variables over event duration for each event. Rainfall events were identified only using data within a 100km radius of the radar, with gaps of one timestep interpolated over using the arithmetic mean of value on either side of the gap, and using an areal mean rain rate threshold of 0.1 mm/h. Created using Level 2 rain rate and Steiner classification data from the Australian Unified Radar Archive (AURA) and ERA5 reanalysis data, both of which are available through NCI.&nbsp;</p>
