Sediment trap results from Amundsen Sea Polynya International Research Expedition (ASPIRE) including C, N and mass fluxes and isotopic composition, Dec 2010 - Dec 2011
The gravitational settling of particles is a major biogeochemical process linking the carbon cycles and ecosystems of the upper ocean, twilight zone and deep sea. Particle interceptor or sediment traps are used to collect settling particles and provide estimates of their vertical fluxes to various depths. We used a new Technicap 24-sample time series sediment trap deployed at 350 m depth in the Amundsen Sea polynya (73o 49’ S, 113o 04’ W, 2010-12.
Constitutive model of erythrocyte membranes with distributions of spectrin orientations and lengths - pipette aspiration data and MatLab Code
<p>The speadsheet contains the original micropipette aspiration measurement of red blood cell membrane. There are five days of experiment each on its own tab, the first three of which are reported in the manuscript. The MatLab code used to generate theoretical predictions based on our new microstructurebased constitutive model are also included. This is the code used to generate least squared regression values for the material coefficients.</p>
Making Drug Discovery Data FAIR: The Yawning Gap between Aspiration and Implementation (recording)
<p>Recording from BioITWorld October 2020</p> <p>The FAIRification of data is gaining impetus. However, for drug discovery, the envisaged increased flow of structures and bioactivity into major public databases, such as PubChem, has not happened. Reasons will be reviewed, but a key impediment is that even when supplementary data from journal papers is submitted to open repositories, such as figshare, there is neither push nor pull into PubChem. Ways to ameliorate this major bottleneck will be discussed, including bypassing the entombment of chemistry in PDFs</p> <p> </p>
Data from: Aspiration-based coevolution of link weights promotes cooperation in the spatial prisoner's dilemma game
In this article, we propose an aspiration-based coevolution of link weights, and we explore how this affects the evolution of cooperation in the spatial prisoner's dilemma game. In particular, an individual will increase the weight of its link to its neighbors only if the payoff received via this interaction will exceed a pre-defined aspiration. Conversely, if the received payoff is below this aspiration, the link weight with the corresponding neighbor will be decreased. Our simulation results show that an appropriate aspiration level leads to a high-cooperation plateau, whereas a too high or a too low aspiration will impede the evolution of cooperation. We explain these findings with a comprehensive analysis of transition points and with a systematic analysis of typical configuration patterns. The presented results provide further theoretical insights with regards to the impact of different aspiration levels on cooperation in human societies.
Data from: Efficacy and safety of CT-guided percutaneous fine needle aspiration and biopsy for malignant pulmonary lesions
<p>Background: CT guided percutaneous transthoracic fine needle aspiration (FNA) and core biopsy (CB) are commonly used to characterise lung lesions. There is conflicting information on which method is superior and wide variation in reported complication rates.</p> <p>Objectives: Our objectives were to establish the efficacy and safety of percutaneous CT guided FNA and CB in the diagnosis of malignant lung lesions.</p> <p>Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent CT guided percutaneous FNA and/or CB for lung parenchymal lesions at Kasturba Medical College Mangalore from January 2013 to December 2020. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee. Efficacy was determined by the adequacy of samples, sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy. Safety was assessed using the incidence of complications.</p> <p>Results: 326 patients underwent both FNA and CB, and 49 underwent FNA alone. Adequate samples were obtained in 82.9% of FNA cases and 95.7% of CB cases. Considering biopsy as the gold standard, the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of FNA for malignancy were 95.19%, 80% and 91.27%, respectively. Kappa agreement between the two methods was substantial (0.767). Pneumothorax was the only complication observed, and was seen in 31 patients (8.2%), of which only one required chest tube drainage. The incidence of pneumothorax was significantly higher in patients with pre-existing lung disease such as COPD/emphysema (p value 0.000), patients with smaller lesions (p = 0.009), and deeper lesions from the pleura (<span>p <0.0001)</span>.</p> <p>Conclusions: FNA and CB are both safe and effective procedures. In the absence of an onsite cytopathologist, we recommend a combination of both techniques.</p>
