Data for: Magnetic-field-assisted molecular beam epitaxy: Engineering of Fe3O4 ultrathin films on MgO(111)

Molecular beam epitaxy is widely used for engineering low-dimensional materials. Here, we present a novel extension of the capabilities of this method by assisting epitaxial growth with the presence of an external magnetic field (MF). MF-assisted epitaxial growth was implemented under ultra-high vacuum conditions thanks to specialized sample holders for generating in-plane or out-of-plane MF and dedicated manipulator stations with heating and cooling options. The significant impact of MF on the magnetic properties was shown for ultra-thin epitaxial magnetite films grown on MgO(111). Using in situ and ex situ characterization methods, scanning tunneling microscopy, conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, and the magneto-optic Kerr effect, we showed that the in-plane MF applied during the reactive deposition of 10 nm Fe3O4(111)/MgO(111) heterostructures influenced the growth morphology of the magnetite films, which affects both in-plane and out-of-plane characteristics of the magnetization process. The observed changes are explained in terms of modification of the effective magnetic anisotropy.

Machine Learning-Assisted Discovery of Hidden States in Expanded Free Energy Space

Collective variables (CVs) are crucial parameters in enhanced sampling calculations and strongly impact the quality of the obtained free energy surface. However, many existing CVs are unique to and dependent on the system they are constructed with, making the developed CV non-transferable to other systems. Herein, we develop a non-instructor-led deep autoencoder neural network (DAENN) for discovering general-purpose CVs. The DAENN is used to train a model by learning molecular representations upon unbiased trajectories that contain only the reactant conformers. The prior knowledge of nonconstraint reactants coupled with the here-introduced topology variable and loss-like penalty function are only required to make the biasing method able to expand its configurational (phase) space to unexplored energy basins. Our developed autoencoder is efficient and relatively inexpensive to use in terms of a priori knowledge, enabling one to automatically search for hidden CVs of the reaction of interest.

Au recovery and particle deposition from Au-Cu-Cl solutions with electrochemically-assisted aqueous reduction

This dataset contains all the measurement data related to the publication titled: Recovery of Gold as Nanoparticles From Gold-Poor Au-Cu-Cl Solutions (2023). The publication introduces the EAR method (electrochemically assisted aqueous reduction): an electrochemical potential pulsing method, where during the time between potential pulses a spontaneous redox reaction contributes to the gold recovery. This occurs through reduction of aqueous gold by aqueous Cu(I) chloride complexes, which are generated via the potential pulse from Cu(II) complexes. This dataset contains:

Cyclic voltammetry data of Au-Cl and Cu-Cl solutions

EQCM data of gold recovery with the EAR method

Characterization of gold particles recovered onto glassy carbon electrodes (SEM, EDS)

Measurement details can be read in included readme files. Briefly, EQCM data (electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance) data includes the measured electrochemical data in one file (time, potential, current) and the measured QCM data (time, frequency and dissipation change) in another file. Particle deposition folders may contain electrochemical data of deposition, SEM images of surface, CV measurements used for determining electrochemical surface area, images processed for particle size measurement with ImageJ and EDS data depending on the sample.

Data from: An investigation into the effectiveness of using acoustic touch to assist people who are blind

In this work, we explored the potential of a technique known as "acoustic touch" to assist people who are blind in finding objects. This technique is an auditory sensory augmentation paradigm that uses smart glasses to sonify objects entering the device's field of view. We developed a wearable Foveated Audio Device (FAD) to study the efficacy and usability of using acoustic touch to search, memorise, and reach items. The study involved 14 participants, 7 blind/low vision and 7 sighted blindfolded participants. We compared the wearable device to two idealised conditions, a verbal clock face description and a sequential audio presentation through external speakers. We found that the wearable device can effectively aid the recognition and reaching of an object. We also observed that the device does not significantly increase the user's cognitive workload. These promising results suggest that acoustic touch can provide a wearable and effective method of sensory augmentation.

Data from: Scoring thermal limits in small insects using open-source, computer assisted motion detection

Scoring large amounts of thermal tolerance traits live or with recorded video can be time consuming and susceptible to investigator bias, and as with many physiological measurements, there can be trade-offs between accuracy and throughput. Recent studies show that particle tracking is a viable alternative to manually scoring videos, although it may not detect subtle movements, and many of the software options are proprietary and costly. In this study, we present a novel strategy for automated scoring of thermal tolerance videos by inferring motor activity with motion detection using an open-source Python command line application called DIME (Detector of Insect Motion Endpoint). We apply our strategy to both dynamic and static thermal tolerance assays, and our results indicate that DIME can accurately measure thermal acclimation responses, generally agrees with visual estimates of thermal limits, and can significantly increase the throughput over manual methods.
