Data for: Stable isotopes in eye lenses reveal migration and mixing patterns of diamond squid in the western North Pacific and its marginal seas

Knowledge of the movements of marine organisms is essential for effective conservation schemes. Here, we investigated the lifetime habitat use of diamond squid, Thysanoteuthis rhombus, collected in the western North Pacific and its marginal seas (the Sea of Japan and the East China sea) during 2021–2022, whose migratory ecology is poorly known, using bulk stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios in eye lenses. From the eye lens isotope profiles, the chronology of the isotopic baseline of squid habitat was estimated by removing the effect of size-dependent changes of trophic position. Then, the baseline estimates were compared to the isoscapes of particulate organic matter. The baseline chronologies showed fluctuations during the paralarval and juvenile stages, becoming stable during the adult stage, suggesting that significant movements mainly occur during the early life stages due to current transport, with adults potentially not undertaking long-distance migrations. The squids in the marginal seas mostly originated from outside the subtropical gyre, while the squids in the subtropical gyre had various sources, including outside the gyre and southern and northern parts within the gyre, revealing a complex mixing pattern of the species. These results show that isotope chronology combined with baseline isoscapes are effective tools to understand animal migrations, which can help to manage various cephalopods and fishes.

Mapping the Local Spatial Charge in Defective Diamond by Means of N-V Sensors—A Self-Diagnostic Concept

Mapping the Local Spatial Charge in Defective Diamond by Means of N-V Sensors—A Self-Diagnostic Concept

Electrically active defects have a significant impact on the performance of electronic devices based on wide-band-gap materials. This issue is ubiquitous in diamond science and technology, since the presence of charge traps in the active regions of different classes of diamond-based devices (detectors, power diodes, transistors) can significantly affect their performance, due to the formation of space charge, memory effects, and the degradation of the electronic response associated with radiation-induced damage. Among the most common defects in diamond, the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center possesses unique spin properties that enable high-sensitivity field sensing at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate that N-V ensembles can be successfully exploited to perform direct local mapping of the internal electric-field distribution of a graphite-diamond-graphite junction exhibiting electrical properties dominated by trap- and space-charge-related conduction mechanisms. By means of optically detected magnetic resonance measurements, we performed both point-by-point readout and spatial mapping of the electric field in the active region at different bias voltages. In this novel “self-diagnostic” approach, defect complexes represent not only the source of detrimental space-charge effects but also a unique tool for their direct investigation, by providing an insight on the conduction mechanisms that could not be inferred in previous studies on the basis of conventional electrical and optical characterization techniques.

Spectroscopic investigations of negatively charged tin-vacancy centres in diamond

Spectroscopic investigations of negatively charged tin-vacancy centres in diamond
The recently discovered negatively charged tin-vacancy centre in diamond is a promising candidate for applications in quantum information processing (QIP). We here present a detailed spectroscopic study encompassing single photon emission and polarisation properties, the temperature dependence of emission spectra as well as a detailed analysis of the phonon sideband and Debye–Waller factor. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy we probe an energetically higher lying excited state and prove fully lifetime limited linewidths of single emitters at cryogenic temperatures. For these emitters we also investigate the stability of the charge state under resonant excitation. These results provide a detailed insight into the spectroscopic properties of the SnV− centre and lay the foundation for further studies regarding its suitability in QIP.

Data from: Searching for diamonds in the apomictic rough: a case study involving Boechera lignifera (Brassicaceae)

The genus Boechera is one of the most difficult species complexes in North America, with about 70 sexual diploids and hundreds of apomictic taxa representing diverse combinations of nearly every known sexual genome. In this study, we set out to clarify the taxonomy of Boechera lignifera, which currently includes a small number of sexual diploid populations in addition to the widespread apomictic diploid upon which the name is based. Using data from cytological studies, microsatellite DNA analyses, geography, and morphology, we demonstrate that the apomictic populations are genetically quite divergent from the sexual diploids. We propose the name Boechera kelseyana to accommodate the sexual diploid taxon, which occurs entirely south of the geographic range of B. lignifera. Boechera kelseyana is consistently separable from B. lignifera based on pollen and seed morphology, the length and proximal orientation of fruiting pedicels, differences in the branching and orientation of trichomes on the lowers stems, and the number of flowers and cauline leaves on unbranched fertile stems.
