Data from: Digital fragment analysis of short tandem repeats by high-throughput amplicon sequencing
High-throughput sequencing has been proposed as a method to genotype microsatellites and overcome the four main technical drawbacks of capillary electrophoresis: amplification artifacts, imprecise sizing, length homoplasy, and limited multiplex capability. The objective of this project was to test a high-throughput amplicon sequencing approach to fragment analysis of short tandem repeats and characterize its advantages and disadvantages against traditional capillary electrophoresis. We amplified and sequenced 12 muskrat microsatellite loci from 180 muskrat specimens and analyzed the sequencing data for precision of allele calling, propensity for amplification or sequencing artifacts, and for evidence of length homoplasy. Of the 294 total alleles, we detected by sequencing, only 164 alleles would have been detected by capillary electrophoresis as the remaining 130 alleles (44%) would have been hidden by length homoplasy. The ability to detect a greater number of unique alleles resulted in the ability to resolve greater population genetic structure. The primary advantages of fragment analysis by sequencing are the ability to precisely size fragments, resolve length homoplasy, multiplex many individuals and many loci into a single high-throughput run, and compare data across projects and across laboratories (present and future) with minimal technical calibration. A significant disadvantage of fragment analysis by sequencing is that the method is only practical and cost-effective when performed on batches of several hundred samples with multiple loci. Future work is needed to optimize throughput while minimizing costs and to update existing microsatellite allele calling and analysis programs to accommodate sequence-aware microsatellite data.

Data Table - Digital Scholarship, PhD project "Bridging Data Science and Intellectual History: Computing the Nodes and Edges in the Old University of Louvain (1425-1797)"
<p>How were academic networks configured in the premodern world, and how did they change? This doctoral project seeks to offer a data-driven answer by computing networks at and around the Old University of Louvain (1425-1797), a crucial hub for the transfer of knowledge in late medieval and early modern Europe. Drawing upon datasets under construction from the teams of the PIs at KU Leuven and UCLouvain, this project sets out to plot and visualize networks of students, scholars and their ‘books’ over almost four centuries, thus integrating data from demographic, prosopographical and book historical datasets. This will lead to a better understanding of how academic communities evolved in the past, and it will help to assess how their organization and structure promoted or hindered the creation and transfer of knowledge in premodern Europe. Hence, the doctoral research project offers an innovative test case to develop novel understandings of networks (e.g.. new tested ways to define nodes and edges) in datasets on scholars and ‘literati’, and it will be able to compare these new results to interpretations of human capital indices in the past. As such, the project creates a pioneering pilot for integrating data science into the field of intellectual and early modern history. This enhanced collaboration between KU Leuven and UCLouvain on a theme related to their common past is timely in view of 600 years Leuven/Louvain in 2025.</p>

Data Supplement: Dataset with Tweets containing the terms "digital" and "peacebuilding", 03/2006-12/2021
<p>This dataset was developed for the empirical analysis of public social media discourse on the topic of digital peacebuilding. It contains tweets with the terms “digital” and “peacebuilding” posted in the period March 2006 - December 2021. The tweets were collected via the Academic Research API, using the academictwitteR R package. Retweets were excluded from the data collection. Furthermore, Twitter IDs, duplicates and emojis were removed from the data. The data was subsequently coded with the Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software 'Atlas.ti'. The coding was carried out in-vivo, using text and GREP search auto-coding. All codes were manually reviewed and then clustered into seven code groups, to which each of the intellectual maneuvers in the article speaks. Given this approach, no code book was necessary. The second sheet (“Code Groups”) contains the codes associated with each code group. The third sheet („Tweets“) contains all tweets and indicates how they have been coded, i.e., 0 means they code has not been assigned, 1 means the code has been assigned. </p>

Fig. 4. Discrimination of the analyzed Alnus extracts into chemogroups. The analyzed extracts can be discriminated into three chemogroups by visualizing the CSCS distance metric between samples as PCoA plot (A) and chemical dendrogram (B). On the other hand, conventional methods such as PCA score plot (C) or hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) using the Euclidean distance (D; chemogroups 1–3 are visualized with same colors used in B to make it easy to be compared) could not discriminate the samples into the same chemotypes. By mapping the chemogrouping of samples on the molecular network, it could be visualized that the three chemogroups were rich in diarylheptanoid, flavonoid, and tannins, respectively (E). Fig. 3 in Assessing specialized metabolite diversity of Alnus species by a digitized LC-MS/MS data analysis workflow
Fig. 3. MS2LDA-driven substructural annotation of diarylheptanoids of Alnus species. Integrated with GNPS library matching and NAP in silico annotation, diarylheptanoid-related Mass2Motifs 41, 49, 72, and 81 could be characterized and correlated with specific substructures of diarylheptanoid aglycones. Scaffold diversity within diarylheptanoid molecular families A, D, and I were revealed by mapping these Mass2Motifs on the molecular network with different colors. (For interpretation of the references to color in this figure legend, the reader is referred to the Web version of this article.)
