Data from: Transforming medical education in Liberia through an international community of inquiry (2017 dataset)

A critical component of building capacity in Liberia's physician workforce involves strengthening the country's only medical school, A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine. Beginning in 2015, senior health sector stakeholders in Liberia invited faculty and staff from U.S. academic institutions and non-governmental organizations to join a partnership focused on improving undergraduate medical education in Liberia. Over the subsequent six years, the members of this partnership came together through an iterative, mutual-learning process and created what William Torbert et al describe as a "community of inquiry," in which practitioners and researchers pair action and inquiry toward evidence-informed practice and organizational transformation. This community of inquiry developed around a few key institutional and interpersonal relationships but expanded over time. Incorporating faculty, practitioners, and students from Liberia and the U.S., the community of inquiry consistently focused on following the vision, goals, and priorities of leadership in Liberia, irrespective of funding source or institutional affiliation. The work of the community of inquiry has incorporated multiple mixed methods assessments, stakeholder discussions, strategic planning, and collaborative self-reflection, resulting in transformation of M.D. education in Liberia. We suggest that the community of inquiry approach reported here can serve as a model for others seeking to form sustainable, international global health partnerships focused on organizational transformation.

Towards an Assessment Rubric for EiPE Tasks in Secondary Education: Identifying Quality Indicators and Descriptors

This study reports on reseach to investigating indicators and descriptors which characterize the quality of students’ code explanations to EiPE (Explain in Plain English) tasks in secondary education.

First, a literature review was carried out to identify quality characteristics and descriptors that differentiate the quality of students’ responses in tertiary education. Then, the quality of upper-secondary students’ responses to a simple EiPE task was analyzed. The results of that analysis were used to refine our quality characteristics and descriptors, which were then translated into a prototypical rubric. In the final phase, the rubric was iteratively tested by two teachers and improved based on their feedback. The final rubric prototype can be used to provide feedback during formative assessment.

This repository includes the EiPE comprehension task, the student responses, and the results from coding the responses:
- StudentResponses.pdf: task and anonymized solutions provided by students, translated to English
- Coding_data.xls: coding by two researchers until they came to an agreement (full set of 34 responses), and coding by Teacher1 on complete set, and coding by Teacher2 on the base-set (with duplicate responses omitted)

Replication Package of Pandemic Pedagogy: Evaluating Remote Education Strategies during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated an abrupt shift in the educational landscape, compelling universities to transition from in-person to online instruction. This sudden shift left many university instructors grappling with the intricacies of remote teaching. Now, with the pandemic behind us, we present a retrospective study aimed at understanding and evaluating the remote teaching practices employed during that period. Drawing from a cross-sectional analysis of 300 computer science students who underwent a full year of online education during the lockdown, our findings indicate that while remote teaching practices moderately influenced students' learning outcomes, they had a pronounced positive impact on student satisfaction. Remarkably, these outcomes were consistent across various demographics, including country, gender, and educational level. As we reflect on the lessons from this global event, this research offers evidence-based recommendations that could inform educational strategies in unwelcoming future scenarios of a similar nature, ensuring both student satisfaction and effective learning outcomes in online settings.

EvalQuiz - LLM-based Automated Generation of Self-Assessment Quizzes in Software Engineering Education

Self-assessment quizzes after lectures, educational videos, or chapters are a commonly used method in software engineering (SE) education to give students the opportunity to test their gained knowledge. However, the creation of these quizzes is time-consuming, cognitively exhausting, and complex, as an expert in the field needs to create the quizzes and review the lecture material for validity. Therefore, this paper presents a concept to automatically generate self-assessment quizzes based on lecture material using a large language model (LLM) to reduce lecturers' workload and simplify the general quiz creation process. The developed prototype was handed to experts, who subsequently evaluated the approach. The results show that automatic quiz generation saves time and the quizzes cover the delivered lecture material well. However, the generated quizzes often lack originality and versatility. Therefore, further prompt engineering might be required to achieve more elaborate results.
