Dataset from: Mechanical forcing of the North American monsoon by orography

The core of the North American monsoon consists of a band of intense rainfall along the west coast of Mexico, commonly thought to be caused by thermal forcing from both land and the elevated terrain of that region. Here we use observations, a global climate model, and stationary wave solutions to show that this rainfall maximum is instead generated when Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains mechanically force an adiabatic stationary wave by diverting extratropical eastward winds toward the equator; eastward, upslope flow in that wave lifts warm and moist air to produce convective rainfall. Land surface heat fluxes do precondition the atmosphere for convection, particularly in summer afternoons, but these heat fluxes alone are insufficient for producing the observed rainfall maximum. These results, together with dynamical structures in observations and models, indicate that the core monsoon should be understood as convectively enhanced orographic rainfall in a mechanically forced stationary wave, not as a classic, thermally forced tropical monsoon. This has implications for the response of the North American monsoon to past and future global climate change, making trends in jet stream interactions with orography of central importance.

Laboratory data of measurements conducted on an n-decane saturated limestone sample using the forced-oscillation method

This supporting information provides the numerical results of the laboratory experiments conducted on an n-decane saturated limestone sample with varying dead fluid volume. The supporting information includes: (1) the extensional attenuation, Poisson ratio, elastic moduli and strains in the rock measured at 0.1 Hz with the dead volume varying from 2 ml to 260 ml and also with the open fluid line, and (2) the frequency dependences of the attenuation, elastic moduli, Poisson ratio and strains obtained in the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 120 Hz.

Climate Forced Hydropower Simulations for the African Continent Using NASA NEX GDDP

This dataset includes the results of simulations of future hydropower usable capacity for power plants across the five African power pools. These include 87 power plants in 27 different countries. These simulations have been forced using NASA's Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) dataset, which includes maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and precipitation simulations from 21 Global Climate Models (GCM) and three scenarios. The scenarios include a retrospective run (1950-2005) and two projection runs for Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5. We include a PDF file "Description of Data.pdf" that describes all the information included in the dataset.

This work is based on the future publication: Caceres, A.L., Jaramillo, P., Matthews, H.S., Samaras, C, & Nijssen, Bart. "Power pools for the win: Assessing climate resilience of hydropower resources in African power pools".

Figure 7 in Feeding behaviour and bite force of sabretoothed predators
Figure 7. Mandibular force profiles of scimitar-toothed nimravids. Values are presented for the canine, P3P4, and post-M1 interdental gaps. Zx/L-values at the canine are lower than those at post-M1, suggesting shallower bites than dirk-toothed nimravids. No increase in dorsoventral buttressing occurs in the vicinity of the cheek teeth, indicating that the mandibular ramus is adapted for slicing meat exclusively. The Zx/Zycanine values of scimitar-toothed nimravids, to the exception of Nimravus brachyops, are much higher than those of extant felids, suggesting that prey was restrained prior to the sabre bite. The Zx/Zycanine values of N. brachyops are relatively lower, being similar to those of the extant felid Neofelis nebulosa.
