Data from: The incidence of admissions for schizophrenia and related psychoses in two cohorts: 1875-1924 and 1994-2010
OBJECTIVES: To investigate changes in incidence of admissions for schizophrenia and related non-affective psychoses in North Wales. DESIGN: Data from two epidemiologically complete cohorts of patients presenting for the first time to mental health services in North Wales between 1875-1924 and 1994-2010 are used in this study to map the incidence of hospital admissions for schizophrenia and non-affective psychoses. SETTING: The North Wales Asylum Denbigh (archived patient case notes) and the North West Wales District General Hospital psychiatric unit. POPULATION: 3168 patients admitted to the North Wales Asylum Denbigh 1875-1924 and 355 patients admitted to the District General Hospital psychiatric unit 1994-2010. RESULTS: There was an increasing admission incidence for schizophrenia between 1875 and 1900, a higher admission rate in the 1990s for males, followed by a drop in rates of admission for both genders since 2006. Admission incidences switch from parity between the sexes in the historical period to a doubling of the admission rates for men compared to women in the modern period. This admission pattern differs from the admission patterns for affective psychoses or organic disorders. CONCLUSION: There have been changes in the incidence of admissions for schizophrenia in North Wales.
Data from: Incidence of influenza A(H3N2) virus infections in Hong Kong in a longitudinal sero-epidemiological study, 2009-2015
Background: Many serologic studies were done during and after the 2009 influenza pandemic, to estimate the cumulative incidence of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infections, but there are few comparative estimates of the incidence of influenza A(H3N2) virus infections during epidemics. Methods: We conducted a longitudinal serologic study in Hong Kong. We collected sera annually and tested samples from 2009-13 by HAI against the A/Perth/16/2009(H3N2) virus, and samples from 2013-15 against the A/Victoria/361/2011(H3N2) virus using the hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) assay. We estimated the cumulative incidence of infections based on 4-fold or greater rises in HAI titers in consecutive sera. Results: There were four major H3N2 epidemics: (1) Aug-Oct 2010; (2) Mar-Jun 2012; (3) Jul-Oct 2013; and (4) Jun-Jul 2014. Between 514 516 and 614 619 relevant pairs of sera were available for each epidemic. We estimated that 98%, 2019%, 57% and 7% of the population were infected in each epidemic, respectively, with higher incidence in children in epidemics 1 and 4. Conclusions: We estimatedfound that around 5% to 20% of the Hong Kong population were infectedre-infections in each of the four H3N2 epidemics that occurred from 2010 through 2014 were rare. The largest H3N2 epidemic occurred with the lowest level of pre-epidemic immunity.
Data from: Incidence and fatality of serious suicide attempts in a predominantly rural population in Shandong, China: a public health surveillance study
Objectives: To estimate the incidence of serious suicide attempts (SSAs, defined as suicide attempts resulting in either death or hospitalisation) and to examine factors associated with fatality among these attempters. Design: A surveillance study of incidence and mortality. Linked data from two public health surveillance systems were analysed. Setting: Three selected counties in Shandong, China. Participants: All residents in the three selected counties. Outcome: measures Incidence rate (per 100 000 person-years) and case fatality rate (%). Methods: Records of suicide deaths and hospitalisations that occurred among residents in selected counties during 2009–2011 (5 623 323 person-years) were extracted from electronic databases of the Disease Surveillance Points (DSP) system and the Injury Surveillance System (ISS) and were linked by name, sex, residence and time of suicide attempt. A multiple logistic regression model was developed to examine the factors associated with a higher or lower fatality rate. Results: The incidence of SSAs was estimated to be 46 (95% CI 44 to 48) per 100 000 person-years, which was 1.5 times higher in rural versus urban areas, slightly higher among females, and increased with age. Among all SSAs, 51% were hospitalised and survived, 9% were hospitalised but later died and 40% died with no hospitalisation. Most suicide deaths (81%) were not hospitalised and most hospitalised SSAs (85%) survived. The fatality rate was 49% overall, but was significantly higher among attempters living in rural areas, who were male, older, with lower education or with a farming occupation. With regard to the method of suicide, fatality was lowest for non-pesticide poisons (7%) and highest for hanging (97%). Conclusions: The incidence of serious suicide attempts is substantially higher in rural areas than in urban areas of China. The risk of death is influenced by the attempter's sex, age, education level, occupation, method used and season of year.
Data from: Global database of matched Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax incidence and prevalence records from 1985–2013
Measures of clinical incidence are necessary to help estimate the burden of a disease. Incidence is a metric not commonly measured in malariology because the longitudinal surveys required are costly and labour intensive. This database is an effort to collate published incidence records obtained using active case detection for Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria. The literature search methods, data abstraction procedures and data processing procedures are described here. A total of 1,680 spatio-temporally unique incidence records were collected for the database: 1,187 for P. falciparum and 493 for P. vivax. These data were gathered to model the relationship between clinical incidence and prevalence of infection and can be used for a variety of modelling exercises including the assessment of change in disease burden in relation to age and control interventions. The subset of data that have been used for such modelling exercises are described and identified.

Data from: Thermal history of alfalfa leafcutting bees affects nesting and diapause incidence
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Variable spring temperatures may expose developing insects to sublethal conditions, resulting in long-term consequences. The alfalfa leafcutting bee, <i>Megachile rotundata</i>, overwinters as a prepupa inside a brood cell, resuming development in spring. During these immobile stages of development, bees must tolerate unfavourable temperatures. In this study, we test how exposure to low temperature stress during development affects subsequent reproduction and characteristics of the F1 generation. Developing male and female <i>M. rotundata </i>were exposed to either constant (6°C) or fluctuating (1 h/day at 20°C) low temperature stress for one week, <span><span>during the pupal stage</span></span> to mimic a spring cold snap. Treated adults were marked and released into field cages, and reproductive output was compared to that of untreated control bees. Exposure to low temperatures during the pupal stage had mixed effects on reproduction and offspring characteristics. Females treated with fluctuating low temperatures were more likely to nest compared to control bees or those exposed to constant low temperature stress. Sublethal effects may have contributed to low nesting rates of bees exposed to constant low temperatures. Females from that group that were able to nest had fewer, larger offspring with high viability, suggesting a trade-off. Interestingly, offspring of bees exposed to fluctuating low temperatures were more likely to enter diapause, indicating that thermal history of parents, even during development, is an important factor in diapause determination.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

FURIN promoter methylation predicts the risk of incident diabetes: A prospective analysis in the Gusu cohort
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Furin has been associated with diabetes but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. As a mediator linking fixed genome and dynamic environment, DNA methylation of its coding gene FURIN may be involved. Here, we aimed to examine the prospective association between DNA methylation in FURIN promoter and incident diabetes during 4 years of follow-up in Chinese adults.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> DNA methylation levels in FURIN promoter were quantified by target bisulfite sequencing using peripheral blood from 1836 participants in the Gusu cohort who were free of diabetes at baseline. To examine the association between DNA methylation levels in FURIN promoter and incident diabetes, we constructed a logistic regression model adjusting for the conventional factors. Multiple testing was controlled by adjusting for the total number of CpG sites assayed using the false-discovery rate approach.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Among the 1836 participants free of diabetes at baseline, 109 (5.94%) participants developed diabetes during the average of 4 years of follow-up. Hypermethylation at two of the eight CpG sites assayed in the FURIN promoter was associated with an increased risk of diabetes, after multivariable adjustment and multiple testing correction. Every 5% increment in methylation levels at CpG1 and CpG2 were associated with a 22% (OR=1.22, 95%CI: 1.05-1.43, P=0.009, q=0.038) and 39% (OR=1.39, 95%CI: 1.08-1.77, P=0.009, q=0.038) higher risk of incident diabetes, respectively. The gene-based association analysis revealed that DNA methylation at multiple CpG loci was jointly associated with incident diabetes (P<0.001). Using the average methylation level of the 8 CpG loci in FURIN promoter revealed a similar association (OR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.02–1.62, P=0.037).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> These results suggested that the hypermethylation levels in FURIN promoter were associated with an increased risk for incident diabetes in Chinese adults.</p>
