Induced polarization and hydraulic tomography joint inversion results on a synthetic model

<p>These data are supplementary material for the following publication: Lukas R&ouml;mhild, Gianluca Fiandaca, Peter Bayer (2024): Joint inversion of induced polarization and hydraulic tomography data for hydraulic conductivity imaging, <em>Geophysical Journal International</em>, Volume 238, Issue 2, August 2024, Pages 960&ndash;973, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggae197">https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggae197</a></p> <p>The data set presents induced polarization (IP) and hydraulic tomography (HT) inversion results for a simple synthetic model. In addition, a joint inversion approach for both data types was implemented, so that individual and joint inversion results can be compared. We also show how the joint inversion procedure has the potential to correct a petrophysical bias within the IP inversion by incorporating the hydraulic data. The effect of different HT setups is also assessed by implementing different source and receiver positions.</p> <p>The file directory contains the original synthetic model, a subfolder for the synthetic data of IP and HT, and a subfolder for the individual HT and IP, as well as the joint inversion results. The HT results contain three different setups (1m, 2m-inside, 2m-outside). The IP results are shown for five different assumptions of petrophysical bias (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). The joint inversion results contain all possible combinations of these test cases. For more information on the methodology, we refer to the paper (see above, currently under review).</p>

A deep learning-based parametric inversion for forecasting water-filled bodies position using electromagnetic method

<p>We design a tunnel electromagnetic joint scan observation system and present a deep learning-based parametric inversion for improved tunnel electromagnetic imaging, designed specifically for tunnel prediction of water filled structures. It utilizes a configuration wherein transmitters scan along the surface while receivers are positioned within the tunnel, employing time-domain and frequency-domain transmitters and a multi-component receiver. The DL model for the first time provides parametric imaging of two different view, forming a self-checking mechanism, which can help constrain the predictions and reduce the non-uniqueness of the inversion. Trained by synthetic data, our system shows impressive adaptability to predict the 3D spatial position of water-filled anomalies and strong robustness in the tunnel environment with metal interference.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Before prediction, you need to download the pre-trained weight model which contain UNet_model/FTEM.ckpt.data-00000-of-00001, UNet_model/FTEM.ckpt.index, UNet_model/FTEM.h5. Seismicity patterns and multi-scale imaging of Krafla (N-E) Iceland with local earthquake tomography: Raw event waveforms for all events used in the inversion and manual picks for temporary network

<p>This Data and Software were used in the submitted paper&nbsp; "Seismicity patterns and multi-scale imaging at Krafla (N-E Iceland) wih local earthquake tomography" by Gl&uuml;ck et al.<br>The data and software provided here are used to compute the velocity models with TomoTV.<br>The raw data (.mseed format) can be visualised with the Python package Pyrocko/Snuffler, which was also used for the arrival time picking.<br>For the temporary network the manual picks are provided along with the code to prepare the manual picks as the input files for a localisation with NonLinLoc by weighting and quality checking the data. WOMBAT: A fully Bayesian global flux-inversion framework, version 1 (intermediate files)

<p>Code for reproducing the results of the <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.04004">WOMBAT v1 paper</a> is available on <a href="https://github.com/mbertolacci/wombat-paper">Github</a>. However, fully reproducing the results takes a very long time because of the need to run an atmospheric chemical transport model. To ease this, this dataset contains intermediate files comprising the outputs of the model. These can be used to run the flux inversions; instructions can be found on the code repository.</p>

Journal of Physical Oceanography.</p> <p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-21-0295.1">https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-21-0295.1</a></p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>The stratification is primarily controlled by temperature in subtropical regions (alpha-ocean), and by salinity in subpolar regions (beta-ocean). Between these two regions lies a transition zone, often characterized by deep mixed layers in winter and responsible for the ventilation of intermediate or deep layers. While of primary interest, no consensus on what controls its position exists yet. Amongst the potential candidates, we find the wind distribution, air-sea fluxes or the nonlinear cabbeling effect. Using an ocean general circulation model in an idealized basin configuration, a sensitivity analysis is performed testing different equations of state. More precisely, the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) temperature dependence is explored, changing the impact of heat fluxes on buoyancy fluxes in a series of experiments. The transition zone is found to be located at the position where the sign of the surface buoyancy flux reverses to become positive, in the subpolar region, while wind or cabbeling are found of secondary importance. This inversion becomes possible because the TEC is reducing at low temperature, enhancing in return the relative impact of freshwater fluxes on the buoyancy forcing at high latitudes. When the TEC is made artificially larger at low temperature, the freshwater flux required to produce a positive buoyancy flux increases and the transition zone moves poleward. These experiments demonstrate the important role of competing heat and freshwater fluxes in setting the position of the transition zone. This competition is primarily influenced by the spatial variations of the TEC linked to meridional variations of the surface temperature.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Download data:</p> <p>Due to their large size, the data have been split into multiple zip files. Inverse Lansing effect: Maternal age and provisioning affecting daughters' longevity and male offspring production

<p>Maternal age effects on offspring life history are known in a variety of organisms, with offspring of older mothers typically having lower life expectancy (Lansing Effect). However there is no consensus on generality and mechanisms of this pattern. We tested predictions of Lansing Effect in several <em>Daphnia magna</em> clones and observed clone-specific magnitude and even direction of the maternal age effect on offspring longevity.  We also report ambidirectional, genotype-specific effects of maternal age on daughters' propensity to produce male offspring. Focusing on two clones with contrasting life-histories, we demonstrate that maternal age effects can be explained by lipid provisioning of embryos by mothers of different ages. Individuals from a single-generation maternal age reversal treatment showed intermediate lifespan and intermediate lipid content at birth. In the clone characterized by the "inverse Lansing Effect" neonates produced by older mothers showed higher mitochondrial membrane potential in neural tissues than their counterparts born to younger mothers. We conclude that an "inverse Lansing Effect" is possible, and hypothesize that it may be caused by age-specific maternal lipid provisioning creating a calorically restricted environment during embryonic development, which, in turn reduces fecundity and increases lifespan.</p>

Data from: Stepwise evolution of a butterfly supergene via duplication and inversion

<p>Supergenes maintain adaptive clusters of alleles in the face of genetic mixing. Although usually attributed to inversions, supergenes can be complex, and reconstructing the precise processes that led to recombination suppression and their timing is challenging. We investigated the origin of the BC supergene, which controls variation in warning colouration in the African Monarch butterfly, <em>Danaus chrysippus</em>. By generating chromosome-scale assemblies for all three alleles, we identified multiple structural differences. Most strikingly, we find that a region of &gt;1 million bp underwent several segmental duplications at least 7.5 million years ago. The resulting duplicated fragments appear to have triggered four inversions in surrounding parts of the chromosome, resulting in stepwise growth of the region of suppressed recombination. Phylogenies for the inversions are incongruent with the species tree, and suggest that structural polymorphisms have persisted for at least 4.1 million years. In addition to the role of duplications in triggering inversions, our results suggest a previously undescribed mechanism of recombination suppression through independent losses of divergent duplicated tracts. Overall, our findings add support for a stepwise model of supergene evolution involving a variety of structural changes.</p>

Application of inverse theory for high spatial resolution reconstructions of thermospheric vector wind fields from Doppler shifts measured by a ground-based network of all-sky Fabry-Perot interferometers

<p>Several types of all-sky viewing Fabry-Perot Interferometers (FPI) have been developed since the 1990s for ground-based remote sensing of thermospheric winds. The Scanning Doppler Imager (SDI) is one such instrument, which provides temporally simultaneous line-of-sight observations from hundreds of independent look directions per instrument exposure. A geographically distributed network of such instruments increases spatial coverage and, at many locations, also provides overlapping observations along multiple independent lines-of-sight. Together, these characteristics significantly increase the density and fidelity that is possible for reconstructed thermospheric vector wind fields, compared to a traditional narrow-field FPI, but at the cost of complexity and difficulty.<br><br></p> <p>Presently, we describe an application of inverse theory to reconstruct three-component vector thermospheric neutral wind fields using data from multiple SDI instruments. The salient features of the method used here are the ability to reconstruct three-component winds on a dense grid that is sampled regularly in latitude, longitude, and time, without assuming any a-priori underlying structure of the winds. This requires solving an inverse problem that does not in general yield a unique solution unless additional constraints are enforced. We describe this step, also known also as regularization, along with the strategy used to maximize the spatial resolution of the derived wind fields by automatically determining the minimum level of regularization that can produce stable inversions. We present example results obtained from applying this technique to one night of data from a network of SDIs in Alaska, and discuss the implications of these results for current understanding of thermospheric dynamics.</p>

Dataset: Inverse responses of species richness and niche specialization to human development

<p class="CxSpFirst">Humans impact biodiversity by altering land use and introducing nonnative species. Yet the extent to which coexistence processes, such as competition and niche shifts, mediate these relationships is not clear. This dataset was used in a study that aims to compare how human development influences wetland plant diversity by examining patterns of species richness, niche specialization, and nonnative species occurrences along a human development gradient.</p> <p class="CxSpFirst">This dataset can be used to analyzed species richness and niche specialization (a measure of the range of human development extents over which a species occurs) patterns from species occurrence data across 1582 wetlands in Alberta, Canada. Associations between human development extent and species richness, niche specialization, and nonnative species can be tested using linear mixed models. Also, nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination can be applied from raw data (see usage notes) to examine whether community composition differed among wetlands surrounded by different human development extents.</p> <p class="CxSpFirst">Note that human development data are accessible only through a data sharing agreement with ABMI. A unique mitochondrial gene bock inversion in Antarctic Trematomin fishes: A cautionary tale

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Many Antarctic notothenioid fishes have major rearrangements in their mitochondrial (mt) genomes. Here we report the complete mt genomes of three trematomin notothenioids: the bald notothen (<em>Trematomus</em> (<em>Pagothenia</em>) <em>borchgrevinki</em>); the spotted notothen (<em>T. nicolai</em>); and the emerald notothen (<em>T. bernacchii</em>). The three mt genomes were sequenced using next-generation Illumina technology, and the assemblies verified by Sanger sequencing. When compared with the canonical mt gene order of the Antarctic silverfish (<em>Pleuragramma antarctica</em>), we found a large gene inversion in the three trematomin mt genomes that included tRNA<sup>Ile</sup>, ND1, tRNA<sup>Leu2</sup>, 16S, tRNA<sup>Val</sup>, 12S, tRNA<sup>Phe</sup> and the control region. The trematomin mt genomes contained three intergenic spacers, which are thought to be the remnants of previous gene and control region duplications. All control regions included the characteristic conserved regulatory sequence motifs. Although next-generation DNA sequencing technology has allowed the rapid and cost-effective sequencing of a large number of complete mt genomes, it is essential in all cases to verify the assembly in order to prevent the publication and use of erroneous data.</span></p>
