Permeable Curbs for Storm Water Pollution
<p>One of the problems that increased urbanization poses is storm water pollution. Several control measures exist that are used to treat and reduce pollution in our waterways, one of those being permeable concretes; but these have not been widely adopted. The goal of this project was to develop a permeable curb apparatus that could be used in retrofitting conventional streets. The permeable curb is comprised of a permeable concrete mix with a perforated pipe running through its center, this allows for water to filter through the porous concrete and continue downstream through the perforated pipe which would eventually lead to our water ways. Project goals include determining permeable curbs pollutant removal efficiencies, and best cleaning options needed to be optimally utilized in urban environments. A test apparatus simulating a typical street profile is used in the laboratory environment to determine the percentage of solids that can be removed from the water treated for typical design rain events, the potential for clogging and fouling of the curb, and the ability to recover lost performance through cleaning the permeable curb. Results to date show that 95% solids removal is possible for up to 15 years of simulated solids loading to the curb. The diameter size range of the 5% of solids that do pass through the curb were measured to be in the range of 2 - 55 mm. Particle sizes larger than this tend to be caught within the curb and contributed eventually to curb clogging resulting in reduced hydraulic flow capacity. Cleaning cycles of the curb at a moderate backwash rate of 0.1 m<sup>3</sup> m<sup>-2­</sup> min<sup>-1</sup> did not recover solids trapped within the curb with only 7 % of the prior trapped solids removed from the curb in the cleaning process.</p>

Data from: Crystalline silica-induced proinflammatory eicosanoid storm in novel alveolar macrophage model quelled by docosahexaenoic acid
<p>Introduction: Workplace exposure to respirable crystalline silica (cSiO<sub>2</sub>) is associated with chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. At the mechanistic level, cSiO<sub>2</sub> particles are quickly phagocytosed by resident alveolar macrophages (AMs) in the lung, causing a robust cycle of proinflammatory cytokine release, lysosomal rupture, mitochondrial toxicity, and immunogenic cell death if the particle is not efficiently cleared by the lung. We and others have demonstrated in bone marrow-derived and transformed macrophage models that supplementation with the ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contributes to increased membrane phospholipid content of DHA and subsequent suppression of cSiO<sub>2</sub>-triggered inflammatory responses. However, mechanistic exploration of ω-3 PUFA effects in AMs is challenging due to reliance on short-lived primary AMs derived from lung lavage fluid.</p> <p>Methods: To address these limitations, we have employed a recently developed novel self-renewing AM model from C57BL/6 mice, fetal liver-derived alveolar-like macrophages (FLAMs), that is phenotypically representative of primary lung AM populations. We found that incubation of FLAMs with 25 µM DHA as ethanolic suspensions or as complexes with bovine serum albumin were equally effective at increasing ω-3 PUFA content of phospholipids at the expense of the ω-6 PUFA arachidonic acid (ARA) and the ω-9 monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid. Based on these findings, FLAMs were treated with 25 µM DHA in EtOH or EtOH vehicle (VEH) for 24 h, with or without LPS for 2 h, and with or without cSiO<sub>2</sub> for 1.5 or 4 h then proinflammatory cytokine release, lysosomal membrane permeabilization, and mitochondrial depolarization assessed. In addition, oxylipin metabolites were measured using a targeted LC-MS lipidomics panel of 156 metabolites.</p> <p>Results: Regardless of whether FLAMs were LPS-primed, cSiO<sub>2</sub>-triggered lysosomal permeability, mitochondrial toxicity, and cell death were not impacted by DHA. LPS+cSiO<sub>2</sub> elicited marked IL-1α, IL-1β, and TNF-α release after 1.5 and 4 h of cSiO<sub>2</sub> exposure, which was significantly inhibited by DHA. In VEH-treated cells, cSiO<sub>2</sub> alone and LPS+cSiO2 induced synthesis of ARA-derived proinflammatory oxylipins including prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and thromboxanes that was suppressed by DHA. In addition, DHA promoted synthesis of pro-resolving DHA-derived oxylipins at the expense of ARA-derived oxylipins.</p> <p>Discussion: FLAMs were amenable to lipidome modulation by DHA, which suppressed cSiO<sub>2</sub>-triggered proinflammatory cytokine responses and ARA-derived oxylipins that potentially contribute to the particle's toxicity in the lung. FLAMs are a promising in vitro alternative to primary AMs for investigating interventions against toxicant-triggered inflammation and autoimmunity in the lung.</p>

Large Scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances during geomagnetic storms of 17 March and 23 June 2015 in the Australian region

European storm-petrel occurrence 2005-2019 Atlantic Iberian arc
<p>Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are widely used tools for conservation and management. Their correct delimitation is challenging, especially when the target species are small, elusive, and inconspicuous, as little data is generally available to adequately assess their distribution at sea. Therefore, currently designated MPAs may not effectively cover key areas for small seabirds, particularly during migration and wintering seasons.</p> <p>We used Ensemble Species Distribution Models (ESDMs) on a 15-year time-series dataset of at-sea census along the Atlantic Iberian arc to predict the potential distribution of the smallest European seabird, the European storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), and compare it with official marine Special Protection Areas (SPAs).</p> <p>Occurrence of European storm-petrel was related to shifts in sea surface temperature, and to small distances from the coast over the continental shelf.</p> <p>Most relevant area for the species in the Atlantic Iberian arc was west-central Portugal to north-western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, with an additional key area in the Gulf of Cádiz. Both zones host significant SPAs, but they inadequately cover key areas for European storm-petrels. Our findings support extending marine SPAs in the Atlantic Iberian arc to ensure their effective protection.</p> <p>The distribution of the species expands over the years, varying both in size and location. These changes might be attributed to dynamic oceanographic variables, such as sea surface temperature and biomass of micronekton, which seem to play a significant role in their foraging behaviour.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications: Our study highlights the importance of analysing long time series and ESDMs to design adequate protected areas which ensure the conservation of small and highly mobile species such as storm petrels. Our results should be considered by decision makers to prioritise and update marine protected areas, while incorporating the dynamic nature of the ocean within an ecosystem-based approach.</p>

Prediction of Port Recovery Time after a Severe Storm Project
<p>Predicting the impact of incoming tropical cyclones on ports in terms of the number of days underperforming is crucial for the effective management of the ports. However, existing methods perform undesirably due to the limited data and the inherent uncertainty associated with cyclone trajectory forecasting. This study applies a recommendation algorithm to address these challenges by focusing on predicting port impact rankings instead of predicting the duration of port impacts, which is often inaccurate and unreliable. First, we have collected comprehensive features of ports and hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexican and employed a modular time-series regression model to determine the duration of port impacts due to tropical cyclones, leveraging vessel count data extracted from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). Inspired by the recommendation algorithm, we recast tropical cyclones and ports as “user” and “items,” respectively, while the duration of port impacts represents their “interaction,” offering an innovative approach to model and analyze cyclone effects on ports. The Factorization Machine (FM) is adopted to learn the relationship between features (i.e., ports and cyclones) and subsequently conduct the port impact ranking. Finally, utilizing the hurricanes Alex, Ian, and Nicole that happened in 2022 as testing cases, the FM-based model excels in prediction performance and robustness against uncertainties compared to the widely used distance-based method. This study aims to provide port authorities and other stakeholders with a trustworthy tool for informed disaster management decisions, thereby enhancing port resilience. </p>
