Data from: First evidence for allotriploid hybrids between Juniperus thurifera and J. sabina in a sympatric area in the French Alps

<p>At Saint Crépin location (French Alps), where sympatry between the tetraploid <i>Juniperus thurifera</i> and the diploid <i>Juniperus sabina</i> occurs, three individuals with an atypical morphology<i>,</i> have been observed. AFLP markers were used to unravel hybridization and potential introgression events in this population. In total, 147 polymorphic loci remained after the process of peak selection. This dataset demonstrates hybrids originated from a cross between <i>J. sabina</i> and <i>J. thurifera</i> and suggests that back-cross at least to <i>J. thurifera </i>is possible. This study shed light on a rare case of hybridization of two <i>Juniperus</i> species with different ploidy levels in natural sympatric population.</p>

Influence of climate, soil and land cover on plant species distribution in the European Alps

<p>Although the importance of edaphic factors and habitat structure for plant growth and survival is known, both are often neglected in favor of climatic drivers when investigating the spatial patterns of plant species and diversity. Yet, especially in mountain ecosystems with complex topography, missing edaphic and habitat components may be detrimental for a sound understanding of biodiversity distribution. Here, we compare the relative importance of climate, soil and land cover variables when predicting the distributions of 2'616 vascular plant species in the European Alps, representing approximately two thirds of all European Flora. Using presence-only data, we built point-process models (PPMs) to relate species observations to different combinations of covariates. We evaluated the PPMs through block cross-validations, and assessed the independent contributions of climate, soil and land cover covariates to predict plant species distributions using an innovative predictive partitioning approach. We found climate to be the most influential driver of spatial patterns in plant species with a relative influence of ~58.5% across all species, with decreasing importance from low to high elevations. Soil (~20.1%) and land cover (~21.4%), overall, were less influential than climate, but increased in importance along the elevation gradient. Furthermore, land cover showed strong local effects in lowlands, while the contribution of soil stabilized at mid-elevations. The decreasing influence of climate with elevation is explained by increasing endemism, and the fact that climate becomes more homogeneous as habitat diversity declines at higher altitudes. In contrast, soil predictors were found to follow the opposite trend. Additionally, at low elevations, human-mediated land cover effects appear to reduce the importance of climate predictors. We conclude that soil and land cover are, like climate, principal drivers of plant species distribution in the European Alps. While disentangling their effects remains a challenge, future studies can benefit markedly by including soil and land cover effects when predicting species distributions.</p>

Primary hybrid zone formation in Tephroseris helenitis (Asteraceae), following postglacial range expansion along the central Northern Alps

<p>Secondary vs. primary hybrid zone formation remains a challenging task as the time window in which these historical (vicariant) vs. contemporary (environmental-selective) processes are distinguishable may be relatively narrow.</p> <p>To examine the origin and structure of a transition zone between two subspecies of <i>Tephroseris helenitis</i> along the central Northern Alps, molecular (AFLP) and morphological (achene type) data as well as ecological niche models (ENMs) were used. Samples were collected over a <i>c.</i> 350 km-long transect, largely covered by ice during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).</p> <p>Genetically non-admixed individuals of subspp. <i>helenitis</i> vs. <i>salisburgensis</i> dominated the westernmost vs. eastern transect areas, with admixed individuals occurring in between. Cline for achene morphology was steep, largely non-coincidental, and displaced to the east of the cline centre for neutral AFLPs. During the LGM, ssp. <i>helenitis</i> should have been able to persist in a refugium southwest of the transect, while suitable habitat for ssp. <i>salisburgensis</i> was apparently absent at this time.</p> <p>Patterns of genetic and clinal variation in combination with our ENM data are suggestive of a primary hybrid zone that originated after the species' postglacial, eastward expansion.</p> <p> </p>

Climate associated genetic variation in Fagus sylvatica and potential responses to climate change in the French Alps

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Local adaptation patterns have been found in many plants and animals, highlighting the genetic heterogeneity of species along their range of distribution. In the next decades, global warming is predicted to induce a change in the selective pressures that drive this adaptive variation, forcing a reshuffling of the underlying adaptive allele distributions. For species with low dispersion capacity and long generation time such as trees, the rapidity of the change could imped the migration of beneficial alleles and lower their capacity to track the changing environment. Identifying the main selective pressures driving the adaptive genetic variation is thus necessary when investigating species capacity to respond to global warming. In this study, we investigate the adaptive landscape of <i>Fagus sylvatica</i> along a gradient of populations in the French Alps. Using a double digest restriction-site associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing approach, we identified 7,000 SNPs from 570 individuals across 36 different sites. A redundancy analysis (RDA)-derived method allowed us to identify several SNPs that were strongly associated with climatic gradients; moreover, we defined the primary selective gradients along the natural populations of <i>F. sylvatica</i> in the Alps. Strong effects of elevation and humidity, which contrast north-western and south-eastern site, were found and were believed to be important drivers of genetic adaptation. Finally, simulations of future genetic landscapes that used these findings allowed identifying populations at risk for <i>F. sylvatica </i>in the Alps, which could be helpful for future management plans. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Sequence of snow maps produced from Sentinel-2 type of observations (SPOT-5 Take 5) over the Deux Alpes and Alpe d'Huez ski resorts

<p>This is a series of snow cover maps between April 11 and September 8, 2015 over a region that covers the Deux Alpes and Alpe d'Huez ski resorts in France. The snow maps were produced from a SPOT-5 Take 5 images using the "Let-it-snow" processor (v1.0, June 2016: http://tully.ups-tlse.fr/grizonnet/let-it-snow).</p> <p>The SEB folder contains 20 GeoTiff at 10 m résolution in Lambert-93 projection system coded as follows (cf. http://tully.ups-tlse.fr/grizonnet/let-it-snow#products-format):</p> <p>    0: No-snow<br>     100: Snow<br>     205: Cloud including cloud shadow<br>     254: No data</p> <p>The "anim_no05jul_opt" animated gif was produced from these data after performing a simple temporal interpolation given by the following rules:</p> <ul> <li>If a pixel masked by a cloud was marked as snow in the preceding image and in the following image, then it is reclassified as a snow pixel.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>If a pixel masked by a cloud was marked as no-snow in the preceding image and in the following image, then it is reclassified as a no-snow pixel.</li> </ul> <p>The July 05 image was removed from the animation due to a cloud/snow confusion.
