Data from: Postzygotic barriers persist despite ongoing introgression in hybridizing Mimulus species
<p>The evolution of postzygotic isolation is thought to be a key step in maintaining species boundaries upon secondary contact, yet the dynamics and persistence of hybrid incompatibilities in naturally hybridizing species are not well understood. Here, we explore these issues using genetic mapping in three independent populations of recombinant inbred lines between naturally hybridizing monkeyflowers <em>Mimulus guttatus</em> and <em>M. nasutus</em> from the sympatric Catherine Creek population. We discover that the three <em>M. guttatus</em> founders differ dramatically in admixture history, with nearly a quarter of one founder's genome introgressed from <em>M. nasutus</em>. Comparative genetic mapping in the three RIL populations reveals three new putative inversions, each one segregating among the <em>M. guttatus</em> founders, two due to admixture. We find strong, genome-wide transmission ratio distortion in all RILs, but patterns are highly variable among the three populations. At least some of this distortion appears to be explained by epistatic selection favoring parental genotypes, but tests of inter-chromosomal linkage disequilibrium also reveal multiple candidate Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities. We also map several genetic loci for hybrid pollen viability, including two interacting pairs that coincide with peaks of distortion. Remarkably, even with this limited sample of three <em>M. guttatus</em> lines, we discover abundant segregating variation for hybrid incompatibilities with <em>M. nasutus,</em> suggesting this population harbors diverse contributors to postzygotic isolation. Moreover, even with substantial admixture, hybrid incompatibilities between <em>Mimulus</em> species persist, suggesting postzygotic isolation might be a potent force in maintaining species barriers in this system. </p>
Women's political participation in city council, Debretabor City Administration, Ethiopia: An exploration of barriers
<p><span>Women have traditionally been marginalized within the political sphere, notwithstanding their significant achievements. The study looks at the barriers that stand in the way of women participating actively in politics, with a particular emphasis on the Debre Tabor City Council. A case study research design was used in the study. The sample techniques used were maximum variation, deviant case, and intensity sampling. Semi-structured interviews, life histories, and focus group discussions (FGD) were also used to obtain the data. The findings showed that women's political engagement in city council was in danger due to a variety of factors, including <span>gender bias in decision-making processes</span>, the country's shifting political landscape, and <span>Islamic religion fellows' perspectives.</span> <span>In light of this, the research findings urged the need for gender-sensitive policy formulation within the city administration council. </span></span></p>

Supplemental Material: High serological barriers may contribute to restricted Influenza-A-virus transmission between pigs and humans
<p>Human-to-swine (reverse zoonotic) transmission of seasonal and pandemic human influenza A viruses (IAV) to pigs primarily replenishes the vast reservoir of genetically and antigenically heterogeneous swine (sw) IAV maintained in domestic pigs worldwide. Sporadic but regularly observed cases of pig-to-human (zoonotic) infections with swIAV tend to be discovered by chance, with children being affected disproportionately often.</p> <p>Here, a total of 3070 porcine and 333 human nasal swab samples from 135 swine farms in Germany were investigated for IAV by real time RT-PCR and full genome sequencing. Community phylogeographic patterns reveal how a barrier filters and structures taxa in North American warm deserts
Aim: The study of biogeographic barriers has been instrumental in understanding the evolution and distribution of taxa. With the increasing availability of empirical datasets, emergent patterns can be inferred from communities by synthesizing how barriers filter and structure populations across species. We assemble phylogeographic data across a barrier and perform spatially-explicit simulations to quantify spatiotemporal patterns of divergence, the influence of species traits on these patterns, and the statistical power needed to differentiate alternative diversification modes. Location: North America Methods: We incorporate published datasets to examine taxa around the Cochise Filter Barrier, separating the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts of North America, to synthesize phylogeographic structuring across the community with respect to organismal functional traits. We then use simulation and machine learning to assess the power of phylogeographic model selection. Results: Taxa distributed across the Cochise Filter Barrier show heterogeneous responses to the barrier in levels of gene flow, phylogeographic structure, divergence timing, barrier width, and divergence mechanism. These responses correlate with locomotor and thermoregulatory traits. Many taxa show a Pleistocene population genetic break, often with introgression after divergence. Allopatric isolation and isolation-by-environment are the primary mechanisms structuring genetic divergence within taxa. Simulations reveal that in spatially-explicit isolation-with-migration models across the barrier, age of divergence, presence of gene flow, and presence of isolation-by-distance can confound the interpretation of evolutionary history and model selection by producing easily-confusable results. We re-analyze five empirical genetic datasets to illustrate the utility of these simulations despite these constraints. Main Conclusions: By synthesizing phylogeographic data for the Cochise Filter Barrier we show that barriers interact with species traits to differentiate taxa in communities over millions of years. Identifying diversification modes across the barrier for these taxa remains challenging because commonly invoked demographic models may not be identifiable across a range of likely parameter space.
Identifying behavioral and attitudinal barriers and drivers to promote consumption of pulses: A quantitative survey across five European countries
<p>Even though pulses are nutritious and environmentally friendly high-protein crops, they are commonly regarded as old-fashioned. Consumption of pulses is low in developed countries, and it has received very limited attention in agricultural and behavioral research over the past years. Based on a pan-European survey, the present study aims to provide extensive insights into consumer perceptions towards pulses. The objective is to identify effective measures to increase consumer acceptance of pulses, and thus potentially increase their share in the daily diets across Europe. Quantitative data was collected in May 2020 through a web-based survey conducted in five different European countries, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Poland, and the United Kingdom (N = 4,916). Quota-based sampling was used to ensure comparability across samples and wide coverage in terms of age, gender, and locality of residence. Using cluster analysis with a subsequent logistic regression, cross-cultural differences were found in terms of relatively high consumption of pulses among Spanish respondents, somewhat lower for Polish, German and UK respondents, and even lower among Danish respondents. Drivers of consumption significantly differed across surveyed samples, mainly being health first, followed by sensory preferences. For respondents from Poland, Spain, and Germany the main reason for not consuming pulses related to problems with digestion, whereas in the Danish and UK samples a neglect related to preparation. Future product development as well as increased information about nutrition and cooking of pulses could potentially increase consumer acceptance. Though, considering cross-cultural differences is important when developing strategies to promote consumption of pulses.</p>

Post-association barrier to host switching maintained despite strong selection in a novel mutualism
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Following a host shift, repeated co-passaging of a mutualistic pair is expected to increase fitness over time in one or both species.<span> </span>Without adaptation, a novel association may be evolutionarily short-lived as it is likely to be outcompeted by native pairings.<span> </span>Here we test whether experimental evolution can rescue a low-fitness novel pairing between two sympatric species of <em>Steinernema</em> nematodes and their symbiotic <em>Xenorhabdus</em> bacteria.<span> </span>Despite low mean fitness in the novel association, considerable variation in nematode reproduction was observed across replicate populations.<span> </span>We selected the most productive infections, co-passaging this novel mutualism nine times to determine whether selection could improve fitness of either or both partners.<span> </span>We found that neither partner showed increased fitness over time.<span> </span>Our results suggest that the variation in association success was not heritable and that mutational input was insufficient to allow evolution to facilitate this host shift.<span> </span>Thus, post-association costs of host switching may represent a formidable barrier to novel partnerships among sympatric mutualists. </span></p>
Image Dataset of Accessibility Barriers
<p><strong>The Data</strong><br> The dataset consist of 5538 images of public spaces, annotated with steps, stairs, ramps and grab bars for stairs and ramps. The dataset has annotations 3564 of steps, 1492 of stairs, 143 of ramps and 922 of grab bars.</p> <p>Each step annotation is attributed with an estimate of the height of the step, as falling into one of three categories: less than 3cm, 3cm to 7cm or more than 7cm. Additionally it is attributed with a 'type', with the possibilities 'doorstep', 'curb' or 'other'.</p> <p>Stair annotations are attributed with the number of steps in the stair.</p> <p>Ramps are attributed with an estimate of their width, also falling into three categories: less than 50cm, 50cm to 100cm and more than 100cm.</p> <p>In order to preserve all additional attributes of the labels, the data is published in the CVAT XML format for images.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Annotating Process</strong><br> The labelling has been done using bounding boxes around the objects. This format is compatible with many popular object detection models, e.g. the YOLO object model. A bounding box is placed so it contains exactly <em>the visible part</em> of the respective objects. This implies that only objects that are visible in the photo are annotated. This means in particular a photo of a stair or step from above, where the object cannot be seen, have not been annotated, even when a human viewer can possibly infer that there is a stair or a step from other features in the photo.</p> <p><strong>Steps</strong><br> A step is annotated, when there is an vertical increment that functions as a passage between two surface areas intended human or vehicle traffic. This means that we have not included:</p> <ul> <li>Increments that are to high to reasonably be considered at passage.</li> <li>Increments that does not lead to a surface intended for human or vehicle traffic, e.g. a 'step' in front of a wall or a curb in front of a bush.</li> </ul> <p>In particular, the bounding box of a step object contains exactly the incremental part of the step, but does not extend into the top or bottom horizontal surface any more than necessary to enclose entirely the incremental part. This has been chosen for consistency reasons, as including parts of the horizontal surfaces would imply a non-trivial choice of how much to include, which we deemed would most likely lead to more inconstistent annotations.</p> <p>The height of the steps are estimated by the annotators, and are therefore not guarranteed to be accurate.</p> <p>The type of the steps typically fall into the category 'doorstep' or 'curb'. Steps that are in a doorway, entrance or likewise are attributed as doorsteps. We also include in this category steps that are immediately leading to a doorway within a proximity of 1-2m. Steps between different types of pathways, e.g. between streets and sidewalks, are annotated as curbs. Any other type of step are annotated with 'other'. Many of the 'other' steps are for example steps to terraces.</p> <p><strong>Stairs</strong><br> The stair label is used whenever two or more steps directly follow each other in a consistent pattern. All vertical increments are enclosed in the bounding box, as well as intermediate surfaces of the steps. However the top and bottom surface is not included more than necessary for the same reason as for steps, as described in the previous section.</p> <p>The annotator counts the number of steps, and attribute this to the stair object label.</p> <p><strong>Ramps</strong><br> Ramps have been annotated when a sloped passage way has been placed or built to connect two surface areas intended for human or vehicle traffic. This implies the same considerations as with steps. Alike also only the sloped part of a ramp is annotated, not including the bottom or top surface area.</p> <p>For each ramp, the annotator makes an assessment of the width of the ramp in three categories: less than 50cm, 50cm to 100cm and more than 100cm. This parameter is visually hard to assess, and sometimes impossible due to the view of the ramp.</p> <p><strong>Grab Bars</strong><br> Grab bars are annotated for hand rails and similar that are in direct connection to a stair or a ramp. While horizontal grab bars could also have been included, this was omitted due to the implied ambiguities of fences and similar objects. As the grab bar was originally intended as an attributal information to stairs and ramps, we chose to keep this focus. The bounding box encloses the part of the grab bar that functions as a hand rail for the stair or ramp.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Usage</strong><br> As is often the case when annotating data, much information depends on the subjective assessment of the annotator. As each data point in this dataset has been annotated only by one person, caution should be taken if the data is applied.</p> <p>Generally speaking, the mindset and usage guiding the annotations have been wheelchair accessibility. While we have strived to annotate at an object level, hopefully making the data more widely applicable than this, we state this explicitly as it may have swayed untrivial annotation choices.</p> <p>The attributal data, such as step height or ramp width are highly subjective estimations. We still provide this data to give a post-hoc method to adjust which annotations to use. E.g. for some purposes, one may be interested in detecting only steps that are indeed more than 3cm. The attributal data makes it possible to sort away the steps less than 3cm, so a machine learning algorithm can be trained on this more appropriate dataset for that use case. We stress however, that one cannot expect to train accurate machine learning algorithms inferring the attributal data, as this is not accurate data in the first place.</p> <p>We hope this dataset will be a useful building block in the endeavours for automating barrier detection and documentation.</p>

Reducing risky interactions: Identifying barriers to the successful management of human-wildlife conflict in an urban parkland
<p>Managing activities that result in human-wildlife conflict is a challenging goal for modern scientists and managers. In recent years, the self-motivated feeding of wildlife by humans has garnered popularity but with consequent risks for the health and safety of both parties. This has resulted in calls for management in areas of high contact, e.g., parklands. Traditional controls are typically utilised (i.e., signage, patrols), yet their success is varied, leading to a rise in research aiming to improve them. This research has primarily focused on language and design, with little attention paid to the role that audience type (i.e., international tourists versus locals/residents) may play in their success. Proportions in audience type present can vary both between parks and spatially within a single park, however, controls are usually applied homogeneously with no consideration for how response may vary between these groups.</p> <p>Here, we performed a robust before-after study across two summers using a wild fallow deer population in a public park that are commonly fed by visitors as our model. We deployed controls, following best practices as outlined by the literature, and tested their overall effectiveness. We then identified key areas with differences in visitor type proportions and tested for variation in success between them.</p> <p>We found that the number of visitors feeding the deer significantly decreased overall after the introduction of controls, although interactions were not eliminated entirely. We discovered that the effectiveness of these controls varied with changes in visitor type, with the most positive effects occurring in areas with more international tourists and no significant effect occurring in areas dominated by resident visitors. Notably, of the food offerings remaining, the proportion of foods that could be perceived as 'nutritionally beneficial' increased in both sites, marking overall changes in the behaviours of even those visitors who refused to stop feeding.</p> <p>These findings highlight the importance of target audience research in human-wildlife conflict management. We recommend that authorities aiming to reduce these interactions perform systematic surveys to identify the audience type present and cater controls accordingly to maximise their success.</p>
Data set - Island area and historical geomorphological dynamics shape multifaceted diversity of barrier island floras
<div> <p><span>The influence of island dynamics and characteristics on taxonomic diversity, particularly species richness, are well studied. Yet, our knowledge on the influence of island dynamics and characteristics on other facets of diversity, namely functional and phylogenetic diversity, is limited, constraining our understanding of assembly processes on islands (e.g., biogeographic history, dispersal and environmental filtering, and species interactions). Using barrier islands, a highly dynamic and so far, understudied island type, we investigate how multiple facets of vascular plant diversity (functional, phylogenetic and taxonomic diversity) are shaped by island geomorphology, modern and historic area, and habitat heterogeneity. In line with our expectation, historical dynamics in island geomorphology affected phylogenetic and taxonomic diversity via habitat heterogeneity. However, island area was the best predictor across all facets of diversity. Specifically, larger islands had higher functional and phylogenetic diversity than expected by chance while most of the smaller islands had lower diversity. The influence of area on functional diversity acted via habitat heterogeneity, with habitat heterogeneity influencing negatively functional diversity. Our results suggest that larger islands accumulate functionally and phylogenetically unique species. Further, results for functional diversity pointed towards potential area-heterogeneity trade-offs, with these trade-offs likely resulting from increased interspecific competition favoring a specific set of trait values (of stronger competitors), particularly on smaller islands. Together, these results demonstrate that going beyond taxonomic diversity contributes to identifying underlying processes shaping diversity-area relationships. </span></p> </div>
Critical barriers to sustainable capacity strengthening in global health: A systems perspective on development assistance
<p>These qualitative datasets are associated with work done under the Inter-agency Working Group for Capacity Strengthening initiative. The data was captured via Miro - a digital whiteboarding tool - using an innovative co-creation process called Systems Acupuncture and details the nine systemic barriers impeding a better, more sustainable country-driven model for capacity strengthening. The data was captured over a series of stakeholder workshops and discussion sessions, and synthesized into nine "system syndrome" maps. The maps illustrate the multi-dimensional causal relationships between individual system drivers and display feedback loops (i.e., sets of drivers that reinforce each other) within and between the system syndrome maps. Whole-transcriptome sequencing identifies neuroinflammation, metabolism and blood-brain barrier related processes in the hippocampus of aged mice during perioperative period
<p><span><strong>Aim</strong>:</span><span> Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) occur frequently after surgery and anesthesia, especially in aged patients. Previous studies have shown multiple PND related mechanisms in the hippocampus, however, their relationships remain unclear. Meanwhile, the perioperative neuropathological processes are sophisticated and changeable, single period study could not reveal the accurate mechanisms. Thus, multiperiod whole-transcriptome study is necessary to elucidate the gene expression patterns during perioperative period.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>: </span><span>Aged</span><span> C57BL/6 mice were subjected to exploratory laparotomy under sevoflurane anesthesia. Whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq analysis) was performed on the hippocampi from control condition (Con), 30 minutes (Day0), 2 days (Day2) and 7 days (Day7) after surgery. Gene Ontology</span><span>/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses,</span><span> quantitative Real-Time PCR, immunofluorescence and fear conditioning test were also performed to elucidate the pathological processes and modulation networks during the period.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>Through RNA-seq analysis, 328, 3597 and 4179 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened out in intraoperative period (Day0 vs Con), early postoperative period (Day2 vs Day0) and late postoperative period (Day7 vs Day2). The involved GO biological processes were divided into 9 categories, and positive-regulated processes were more than negative-regulated ones. Seventy-four transcription factors were highlighted. The potential synaptic and neuroinflammatory pathways were constructed for Neurotransmitter, Synapse and Neuronal alteration categories with 9 DEGs (<em>Htr1a, Rims1, Ezh2,</em> etc.). The metabolic and mitochondrial pathways were constructed for Metabolism, Oxidative stress and Biological rhythm categories with 9 DEGs (<em>Gpld1, Sirt1, Cry2, </em>etc.). The blood-brain barrier and neurotoxicity related pathways were constructed for Blood-brain barrier, Neurotoxicity and Cognitive function categories with 10 DEGs (<em>Mmp2, Itpr1, Nrf1, </em>etc.).</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> The results revealed gene expression patterns and modulation networks in the aged hippocampus during perioperative period, which provide insights into overall mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for prevention and treatment of perioperative central nervous system diseases, such as PND, from the genetic level.</span></p>

<p>This dataset contains a list of Reddit posts and the corresponding threads for those posts resulting from targeted searches of four delivery-related subreddits conducted in Fall 2021. We used this dataset to understand driver practices in and views on delivering in urban areas and the challenges they face.</p> <p>It was downloaded using Reddit's API through the RedditExtractoR package for the R programming language. Re-use of this data is subject to Reddit API terms.</p>
