Dark Elves Ballista
Warhammer Fantasy Dark Elve Repeat Bolt Thrower. First model i tried to texture with 3D Coat. A lot new experiences for me. The textures aren`t finished yet and i will come back later to get them nice and clean. Overall i think i should have used some more geometry to make sillhouette smoother. Whistling in the dark by Robert Arneson
*"A pioneering California ceramicist, Robert Arneson completed numerous monumental portrait heads during the 1970s. Like much of the artist's work from this period, Whistling in the Dark depicts Arneson himself. This terracotta head, which the artist darkened by closing the gas kiln more than would have been customary, wears a relatively subdued expression compared to other works from the same period depicting Arneson's grotesquely manipulated visage."* https://whitney.org/collection/works/2103 Captured at the Whitney Museum with Polycam Photo mode. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) dynamic response and dark count vs temperature correlation

Project FleX-RAY employed photon counting capable sensors in order to capture light that was generated by the scintillation phenomenon, in plastic scintillating fibres. These special photodiodes are called Silicon Photomultipliers, or SiPMs. In order to determine the suitability and performance of different SiPM models available in the market, we carried out a series of tests to :

Evaluate the correlation of dark count rate against temperature and

Compare the amplitude response of the actual devices when excited by a 50 picosecond light pulse.

The data of series 1 are tabulated in the spreadsheet titled "darkCountVsTemp.xlsx".

The data of series 2 are arranged in separate "zip" archives, each titled by the device model under test. These zip archives are within a master zip file titled "SiPM_laser_pulse_response.zip".

Test equipment and set-up:

Devices under test: Hamamatsu models S13360-1375, S13360-3075 and ON-Semi models microFC-10020, microFC-10035

Measurement device(s)/board(s): To excite SiPMs, we used picosecond pulse laser type PLDD-100k-OEM from Alphalas. To record raw pulse output of SiPMs we used oscilloscope Tektronix DPO7104. To record the darkcount rate of SiPMs we used oscillsocope Keysight DSOX1204G. A custom, 3D-printed light-tight box was used to shield the SiPMs from ambient light.

This work was financed by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program under grant agreement No. 899634.

Dance Your Ph.D. 2018 Physics FINALIST: Dark energy and dark matter via probabilistic data analysis

Dark matter (dancer in black mask; brings dancers together) and dark energy (dancer in black mask; pulls dancers apart) are the mysterious constituents of the universe that determine the evolution of the largest structures, clusters of galaxies (dancers in tie dye), and I (dancer in gold mask) want to learn about them them by analyzing a huge set of 3D galaxy positions. The telescope (dancer in silver mask) gives me 2D images of galaxies with no distances, so I have to estimate galaxy locations with "redshift," which is correlated with distance. The exciting telescopes of the next decades will build large samples of galaxies by taking lots of superficial color data that's not informative enough to determine the redshift. One thing that tells us about dark matter and dark energy is the redshift distribution (dancer in red stripes) -- I can still learn about dark energy and dark matter if I can figure out how many galaxies have each redshift. Since I don't actually know the redshifts of any galaxies, I consider the probability of redshift (dancers in white shirts) for each galaxy based on its limited color data. However, the redshift probabilities are biased by prior beliefs (dancer in gray scarf) about physics that are transmitted by the way we derive the probabilities from the galaxy colors. If unaccounted for, the prior beliefs could cause us to draw the wrong conclusions about dark matter and dark energy, meaning we won't learn anything from all this amazing telescope data we're going to have. For my thesis, I developed a method that puts the prior beliefs in their proper place and lets the data guide the inference of the redshift distribution, using an approach called Bayesian statistics. I audition many possible redshift distributions and check how likely each is to have caused the observed galaxy colors, with the redshift probabilities as the judges; this procedure is called Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling, and it leads to an ensemble of possible redshift distributions each with an associated probability of having produced the observed galaxy colors. By doing the math carefully and correctly, we will learn more about dark matter and dark energy even with the coarsest data!

A high-quality genome assembly and annotation of the dark-eyed junco Junco hyemalis, a recently diversified songbird

The dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) is one of the most common passerines of North America, and has served as a model organism in studies related to ecophysiology, behavior and evolutionary biology for over a century. It is composed by at least six distinct, geographically structured forms of recent evolutionary origin presenting remarkable variation in phenotypic traits, migratory behavior and habitat. Here we report a high-quality genome assembly and annotation of the dark-eyed junco generated using a combination of shotgun libraries and proximity ligation ChicagoTM and Dovetail HiCTM libraries. The final assembly is 1,031,523,571 bp long, with 98.3% of the sequence located in 30 full or nearly full chromosome scaffolds, and with a N50/L50 of 71,3 Mb/5 scaffolds. We identified 19,026 functional genes combining gene prediction and similarity approaches, of which 15,967 were associated to GO terms. Genome assembly and annotated set of genes yielded 95.4% and 96.2% completeness scores, respectively, when compared with the BUSCO avian dataset. This new assembly for J. hyemalis provides a valuable resource for genome evolution analysis, as well as for identifying functional genes involved in adaptive processes and speciation.
