Data for: Climate and forest attributes influence aboveground biomass of deciduous broadleaf forests in China

Forests provide a huge carbon pool, a substantial portion of which is stored in aboveground biomass (AGB). Deciduous broadleaf forests in China are an essential component of global deciduous broadleaf forests, yet the impacts of climate and forest attributes on their AGB are not well understood.

Using a comprehensive forest inventory database available from 772 plots distributed across the temperate and subtropical deciduous broadleaf forests in China (23.51°-42.53° N and 104.24°-128.27° E), we applied variance partitioning analysis, model selection analysis and structural equation models to explore how AGB was associated with climate and forest attributes (species diversity, community-level functional traits, and stand structures) in different climatic regions (semi-arid forests, semi-humid forests and humid forests).

Community-level functional traits and stand structures together explained a great portion of the variance in AGB. The effect of community-level functional traits was greater than that of stand structures in semi-arid forests and semi-humid forests, but smaller in humid forests. Further analyses showed that community-level maximum tree height, stem density and tree size inequality were the best explanatory variables. Although climate and species diversity had only minor effects, the direct positive effect of mean annual precipitation (MAP) was still important, especially in semi-arid forests.

Synthesis. Community-level functional traits but not species diversity were key drivers of AGB, indicating that tree species diversity loss may not impair AGB substantially in deciduous broadleaf forests in China. Moreover, stand structures had also strong effects on AGB in both semi-arid forests and humid forests, highlighting the importance of structural complexity. In addition, MAP had a direct positive effect on AGB in semi-arid forests and semi-humid forests, and a future predicted increase in drought might potentially reduce carbon storage in these forests.

Data from: Soil arthropod communities associated with Berberis thunbergii invasion in a temperate deciduous forest harbor more detritivores

Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is a widely established invasive shrub in temperate forests of the northeastern U.S. with the potential to alter soil arthropod communities through changes to soil nutrient cycling and acidity.

We compared soil arthropod taxa and functional feeding groups between invaded and nearby control areas in a paired observational survey.

Community ordination analysis suggested minimal differences between barberry and control samples. In contrast, pairwise differences revealed elevated densities of multiple taxa in barberry-invaded soils.

Among taxa that were able to be defined by functional feeding group and were collected at higher densities under barberry, all were detritivores. For example, barberry-invaded soils harbored an average of 40% more Isopoda and more than twice as many Diplopoda per unit dry compared to control samples. Differences we observed between barberry and control samples despite the limited study spatiotemporal scope demonstrate the potential for invasions to restructure soil arthropod communities.

Observed patterns potentially reflect elevated leaf litter decomposition rates associated with the invasion; results also highlight the need to integrate site-specific environmental attributes when assessing the impact of invading plants on soil ecosystems.

Tim-3 regulates the immunosuppressive function of decidual MDSCs via the Fyn-STAT3-C/EBPβ pathway during Toxoplasma gondii infection

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) play a key role in maintaining maternal-fetal tolerance for a successful pregnancy, but the role of MDSCs in abnormal pregnancy caused by Toxoplasma gondii infection is unknown. Herein, we revealed a distinct mechanism by which T-cell immunoglobulin domain- and mucin domain-containing protein-3 (Tim-3), an immune checkpoint receptor that balances maternal-fetal tolerance during pregnancy, contributes to the immunosuppressive function of MDSCs during T. gondii infection. The expression of Tim-3 in decidual MDSCs was significantly downregulated following T. gondii infection. The proportion of monocytic MDSC population, the inhibitory effect of MDSCs on T-cell proliferation, the levels of STAT3 phosphorylation, and the expression of functional molecules (Arg-1 and IL-10) in MDSCs were all decreased in T. gondii-infected pregnant Tim-3 gene knockout (Tim-3KO) mice compared with infected pregnant WT mice. After treatment with Tim-3-neutralizing Ab in vitro, the expression levels of Arg-1, IL-10, C/EBPβ, and p-STAT3 were decreased, the interaction between Fyn and Tim-3 or between Fyn and STAT3 was weakened, and the binding ability of C/EBPβ to the promoters of ARG1 and IL10 was decreased in human decidual MDSCs with T. gondii infection, while opposite results were observed following treatment with galectin-9 (a ligand for Tim-3). Inhibitors of Fyn and STAT3 also downregulated the expression of Arg-1 and IL-10 in decidual MDSCs and exacerbated adverse pregnancy outcomes caused by T. gondii infection in mice. Therefore, our studies discovered that the decrease of Tim-3 after T. gondii infection could downregulate the functional molecules of Arg-1 and IL-10 expression in decidual MDSCs through the Fyn-STAT3-C/EBPβ signaling pathway and weaken their immunosuppressive function, which eventually contributes to the development of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
