Mercury and Arsenic muscle concentration data as used in "Mixed model approaches can leverage database information to improve the estimation of size-adjusted contaminant concentrations in fish populations"
<p>These mercury and arsenic concentration data, as recieved from Gretchen Lescord, and downloaded from the MOE fish contaminant database, were used to create the publication Mixed model approaches can leverage database information to improve the estimation of size-adjusted contaminant concentrations in fish populations. The markdown and code used for the analysis of this data can be found on Github at https://github.com/GLFC-WET/HGAS_master.</p>
Total mercury concentrations of Florida lionfish
<p>Invasive lionfish (<i>Pterois volitans/miles</i>) pose a serious threat to marine ecosystems throughout the western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The development of a fishery for lionfish has been proposed as a strategy for controlling populations; however, there is concern about consumption of this species by humans due to its high trophic position and potential for bioaccumulation of mercury. We analyzed total mercury (THg) in tissues of lionfish from two locations on the east coast of Florida. THg in lionfish increased with size and differed by location and sex. THg was highest in muscle tissue and was strongly positively correlated among tissues. THg in lionfish was lower than other commonly consumed marine fishes, and falls into Florida's least restrictive advisory level. Consumption of lionfish poses a low risk and concerns over mercury bioaccumulation should not present a significant barrier to lionfish harvest.</p>
Figure 2 from: Ballardini M, Mercuri A, Littardi C, Abbas S, Couderc M, Ludeña B, Pintaud J (2013) The chloroplast DNA locus psbZ-trnfM as a potential barcode marker in Phoenix L. (Arecaceae). ZooKeys 365: 71-82. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.365.5725
Figure 2 - Structure and variation of the minisatellite in the trnG-trnfM intergenic spacer. The repeats of the two mutational motifs (1 and 2) are indicated above the sequence alignment of the 7 haplotypes recorded. The pattern of inverted repeats generated by the two motifs and their reverse complements (RC) is shown below the alignment. See Table 1 for haplotype distribution among species.

Figure 1 - The sequenced cpDNA psbZ-trnfM region. The location of PCR primers used and polymorphisms found in this study are shown. DNA fragment length refers to the Phoenix dactylifera cv. Khalas cpDNA sequence (Yang et al. 2010), characterised by a 4-repetitions minisatellite haplotype (NCBI Reference Sequence: NC_013991.2).
