Organic carbon, temperature, oxygen, and inflow volume time series for Falling Creek Reservoir, Vinton, Virginia: Summer 2014
Weekly and subweekly monitoring data collected from June to October 2014 were used to study organic carbon dynamics in Falling Creek Reservoir, a drinking water reservoir owned and managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority and located in Vinton, Virginia, USA. The dataset consists of: 1) daily inflow volumes and the temperature of water entering the reservoir, measured at a gauged weir on Falling Creek Reservoir’s primary inflow tributary; 2) weekly to subweekly depth profiles of temperature and oxygen collected at the deepest site of the reservoir adjacent to the dam; and 3) approximately weekly grab samples of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved carbon dioxide collected from subsurface (0.1 m depth) and just above the sediments (9.0 m depth). This dataset also includes approximately weekly grab samples of organic carbon and dissolved carbon dioxide in the inflow tributary measured at the gauged weir, dissolved oxygen concentrations in the inflow tributary measured at the gauged weir, and organic carbon deposition rates measured at 8 m depth at the deepest site of the reservoir approximately every 4 weeks with sedimentation traps.
Guatemala Soil Organic Carbon Database (0 to 30 cm, 1965-2010).
The soil organic carbon database is a harmonized and structured data set with information about soil organic carbon (SOC), soil bulk density (BD), and coarse fragments (CF). The SOC, BD, and CF data were fitted to one standard depth of 0-30 cm using a mass preservation spline implemented in R programmation language. The data was obtained from Unidad de Planificación Geográfica y Gestión de Riesgo of Ministerio de Agricultura Ganadería y Alimentación (UPGGR-MAGA), Facultad de Agronomía of Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (CEDIA-FAUSAC), and the World Soil Information Service (WoSIS). This database covers the entire Guatemalan territory, although its distribution does not represent all ecosystems, soil types, and coverages/land use. It contains 910 observations of SOC, 704 of them have BD information, and 8 have CF information. The entire data set has information on the year of observation, and its temporal distribution goes from 1965 to 2010. Nearly 50% is in the decade 2000-2010, and 41% is in the 2010 year. In addition, the analytical methods for quantifying SOC, BD, and CF are available in 99, 25, and 0% of the data, respectively. SOC contents range from 1.45 to 162 g*kg^-1, BD values from 0.42 to 1.69 g*cm^-3, and CF values from 0 to 21%wt.
Meta-analytical data on soil organic, particulate organic, and mineral-associated organic carbon under nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased precipitation, drought, and their combined effects
Data were harvested from journal articles found on the Web of Science Core Collection and the ProQuest Agricultural and Environmental Database that studied soil organic matter fraction carbon responses to global changes (nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased and decreased precipitation, and combined effects). Soil organic carbon fractions were designated as particulate organic carbon or mineral-associated organic carbon based on size and density cutoffs. Relevant metadata, including article information (authors, publication year), environmental information (soil type, climate, and land use), and experiment information (rates, methods) were also added to the dataset.

Bulk density and percent carbon from surface organic layers in unburned black spruce stands used in the effects of variations in post-fire organic layer thickness studies in the Delta Junction region, 1995-2003
This database contains data on bulk density and percent carbon from surface organic layers in two unburned black spruce stands adjacent to the 1994 burn in the Delta Junction region. These data were used in an analysis of variations in the depths of surface organic layers found in burned and unburned black spruce stands, and the effects of variations in depth of burning on soil temperature and moisture, and organic layer carbon stocks. Data for the overall study were collected between 1995 and 2003 by Eric Kasischke (University of Maryland), Kathy O?Neill (Duke University), and Jill Johnstone (University of Alaska Fairbanks). Sites were located in burned black spruce stands within the perimeters of three recent fires (1987, 1994, and 1999), unburned black spruce stands adjacent to the burned stands, and within one black spruce stand that burned in 1956. The three fires were: (a) the 1987 Granite Creek fire located 15 km to the east of Delta Junction, Alaska USA, bordering the Alaska Highway on the North and Jarvis Creek on the south; the 1994 Hajdukovich Creek fire located 45 km southeast of Delta Junction Alaska, USA, bordering the Alaska Highway to the North and the Gerstle River to the West, and the 1999 Donnelly Flats fire, located 8 km south of Delta Junction, bordering Jarvis Creek to the east and the Richardson Highway on the west. Data that were collected and are in databases associated with this project include: (1) organic layer depths in burned stands; (2) organic layer depths in unburned stands; (3) basal diameters of overstory trees in unburned stands and distance measures that can be used to estimate stand density; (4) mineral soil temperature and moisture data in burned stands; (5) mineral soil temperature and moisture data in unburned stands; and (6) bulk density and percent carbon data from different organic layers in unburned stands.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Dissolved Organic Carbon 2007-2017
The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. How have dissolved organic carbon concentrations and radiocarbon ages changed over interannual and seasonal time? How do DOC concentrations correlate with environmental variables, such as precipitation, thaw depth, water table depth, and soil temperatures? This dataset contains dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and radiocarbon values from streams draining a permafrost research site at Eight Mile Lake, AK. Several sampling years include multiple annual sampling dates, while other years include only one sampling date. Not every location was sampled every year, and not every parameter was measured every year. The dataset will continue into 2017 but whether it will be maintained after that year is unknown.

McMurdo Dry Valleys Lake Bonney Autonomous Lake Profiler and Samplers (ALPS): Particulate Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Concentrations
Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate carbon and nitrogen found at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.
SBC LTER: REEF: Exudation of dissolved organic carbon by the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera
We estimated rates of DOC exudation by Macrocystis pyrifera using short-term (2-4 hours) in situ incubations of entire blades and portions of stipes in the kelp forest at Mohawk Reef near Santa Barbara, California, USA (34o 23.660’ N, 119o 43.800’ W). Incubations of blades were conducted within 2 m of the sea surface at midday on eight dates between October 2007 and August 2011 to investigate the effects of blade growth stage, nutrient status (as indicated by C:N ratio determined using an Exeter Analytical CE-440 CHN/O/S elemental analyzer), epiphyte load, sea surface irradiance, and sea surface temperature on rates of DOC release from intact blades.
SGS-LTER Transect Study - Organic Carbon in Soils across Toposequences on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1983-1984
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. CPER SOC across Toposequences - Pedons and their corresponding topography were described along an 8 km transect oriented normal to the major drainages of the CPER. A total of 140 pedons representing 23 toposequences and 7 plains segments were characterized. Sampling sites were selected within toposequences according to slope position (summit, shoulder, backslope, footslope, toeslope) and within plains segments at approximate 100 m intervals. Pedons were described and sampled by genetic horizon according to the standards of the National Cooperative Soil Survey. Analyses, conducted at Colorado State University, included particle size and organic C. Bulk density was estimated empirically according to: Rawls, W.J. 1983. <p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>Seawater samples were collected from a Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) rosette, which was deployed from the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov. The samples were collected at a number of locations in the Southern Ocean as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) during the expedition that took place in the Austral summer of 2016/2017. Particulate organic matter (POC) is inclusive of all living and detrital material. It is the most common form of organic carbon matter that results from photosynthesis by phytoplankton.
