Dataset for: Substituting confidence for competence in health literacy: A review of studies, citations, and trial registrations

<p><span>Patient health literacy is crucial for effective patient&ndash;physician communication, and interventions targeting health literacy can use measures based on either actual performance (competence) or self-ratings (confidence). This paper analyzed the development of these measures through three studies. Study 1 reviewed articles describing the development of novel measures; Study 2 examined the citations of these studies, and Study 3 evaluated data from clinical trials registries. The literature search was conducted from April 14&ndash;27, 2023. PubMed was used as the main database in which studies on health literacy measures were searched for the systematic review (Study 1). We then used Google Scholar and the OpenCitations database to describe citation patterns of the included health literacy measures (Study 2). Finally, we evaluated confidence- or competence-based health literacy measures by extracting and analyzing trial data from ClinicalTrials.gov (Study 3). Our review included 55 health literacy measures, among which 23 (42%) were competence-based, 28 (51%) confidence-based, and 4 (7%) assessed both. Recent trends show a shift toward developing more confidence-based measures and a decline in creating new competence-based measures. Confidence-based measures were increasingly cited, whereas citations for competence-based measures have plateaued. Lastly, our findings showed a steady increase in the use of confidence-based measures in recent clinical trials and a decrease in the use of competence-based measures when controlling for sample size. This shift may be detrimental to public health given our limited knowledge about patients&rsquo; ability to meet demands of shared decision-making, especially regarding new technologies like artificial intelligence in healthcare.</span></p>

Tipping points and multiple drivers in changing aquatic ecosystems: A review of experimental studies (Data)

<p>The ecological concepts of tipping points and multiple stressors are both important concepts for the management of natural ecosystems. However, very few studies have attempted to combined both concepts and evaluate tipping points in the context of multiple stressors. The data available here have been published in a literature review (Limnology &amp; Oceanography). In this review we (1) develop a historical and current perspective of tipping point studies in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecological systems; (2) portray the research effort in different freshwater and marine habitats; and (3) explore the results of experimental studies focusing on tipping points measured at the individual, communities, ecosystem level, as well as ecosystem functions and services in a context of single and multiples stressors.</p>

A systematic review of long-term avian studies on phenological changes of birds and their food

<p>Many organisms reproduce in seasonal environments, where selection on timing of reproduction is particularly strong as consumers need to synchronize reproduction with the peaked occurrence of their food. When a consumer species changes its phenology at a slower rate than its resources, this may induce a trophic mismatch, i.e. offspring growing up after the peak in food availability, potentially leading to reductions in growth and survival. However, there is large variation in the degree of trophic mismatches as well as in its effects on reproductive output.</p> <p>Here, we explore the potential causes for variation in the strength of trophic mismatches in published studies of birds. Specifically, we ask whether the changes in the degree of mismatch that have occurred over time can be explained by a bird's <strong>(1)</strong> breeding latitude, <strong>(2)</strong> migration distance, and/or <strong>(3)</strong> life-history traits.</p> <p>In particular, the script used contains the following analyses: <strong>(I)</strong> using linear mixed effect models we test whether the rate of change in food phenology, bird phenology and their difference (i.e. the rate of change in asynchrony) differed significantly from zero, <strong>(II)</strong> using linear mixed effect models we test whether the rate of change in asynchrony between birds and their food could be explained by breeding latitude, migratory behaviour and/or species life-history traits (body mass, clutch size and incubation duration).</p> <p>We found that none of these three factors explains changes in the degree of mismatch over time. Nevertheless, food phenology did advance faster at more northerly latitudes, while shifts in bird phenology did not show a trend with latitude. We argue that the lack of support in our results is attributable to the large variation in the metrics used to describe timing of food availability.</p>
