Resilient rivers and connected marine systems: a review of mutual sustainability opportunities
<p>Associated data used in the following review paper (under review) - Resilient rivers and connected marine systems: a review of mutual sustainability opportunities. Abstract: The United Nations initiated the sustainable development goals (SDGs) to produce "a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future." Established in 2015, progress of SDGs directed at the aquatic environment is slow despite an encroaching 2030 deadline. The modification of flow regimes combined with other anthropogenic pressures underpin ecological impacts across aquatic ecosystems. Current SDG 14 targets (Life Below Water) do not incorporate the interrelationships of rivers and marine systems systematically, nor do they provide recommendations on how to improve existing management and policy in a comprehensive manner. Therefore, this review aims to illustrate the linkages between rivers and marine ecosystems concerning the SDG 14 targets and to illustrate land to sea based strategies to reach sustainability goals. We provide an applied case study to show how opportunities can be explored. We review three major areas where mutual opportunities are present: 1) rivers contribute to marine and estuary ecosystem resilience (targets 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.5); (2) resilient rivers are part of the global fisheries sustainability concerns (targets 14.4, 14.6, 14.7, 14.B); and (3) enhancing marine policy and research from a river and environmental flows perspective (targets 14.A, 14.C). Associated data used in the review is described below.</p>

Data for the paper, "Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use"
<p>These data were collected for the paper, "Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use" published in One Earth. It includes a database of studies applying social media data in environmental sustainability research, which were collected and reviewed in full by the authors. Rather than providing a comprehensive summary of all relevant literature like in a systematic review, our objective was to take stock and evaluate the previous body of work in the field in order to promote conceptual innovation from its critical examination. Building on a set of 169 studies collected in a previous systematic review of social media data applications in environmental research (Ghermandi and Sinclair 2019), the database includes additional relevant studies that were identified by snowballing previous references and adding further gray and scientific academic articles known to the authors. For studies to be included in our analysis, they had to involve the use of data from one or more social media platforms and investigate human interactions with and/or impacts on the environment. We relied on a broad definition of social media including any website or application that enables users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (e.g., blogging sites, recommendation sites, and online forums). We further strengthened the analysis by including insights from additional literature on social media that do not have a direct application to environmental sustainability (e.g., studies on biases in social media data). The final database consists of 415 studies, which were published between 2011 and 2021.</p> <p> </p> <p>Ghermandi, Andrea, and Michael Sinclair. Sustaining Cities, Naturally Webinar: Recording Day 2
<p>Poorly planned urbanisation can lead to societal challenges as social deprivation, climate change, deteriorating health and increasing pressure on urban nature. Urban ecosystem restoration can contribute to lessen these challenges, e.g. through implementing nature-based solutions (NBS). </p> <p>This presentation was made as part of the online webinar ‘Sustaining cities, Naturally: Urban ecosystem restoration in Europe, China and Latin America’, which took place as an official side-event of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2022 on 13th and 14th October 2023. The webinar was jointly organised by the projects: INTERLACE, CONEXUS, Regreen and CLEARING HOUSE. </p> <p>The webinar illustrated how Horizon 2020 projects support international cooperation in knowledge creation and knowledge exchange between local authorities and researchers to promote urban ecosystem restoration in Europe, China and Latin America and brought together cities, regions and local authorities, city network representatives, policy makers, researchers, civil society and experts on nature-based solutions and urban ecosystem restoration from Europe, China and Latin America. </p>
Sustainable recovery of critical elements from seawater saltworks bitterns by integration of high selective sorbents and reactive precipitation and crystallisation: Developing the probe of concept with on-site produced chemicals and energy
<p>The availability of raw mineral resources containing elements included in the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) list is a growing concern for the European Union. Sea mining has been identified as a promising secondary source. In particular, brines obtained in solar saltworks (bitterns) contain relevant amounts of valuable CRMs such as Mg(II), B(III), other alkaline/alkaline earth metals (Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II)) and transition/post-transition elements (Co(II), Ga(III), Ge(IV)). However, the low concentration of some of these elements (µg/L) requires an effort to develop recovery routes that are sustainable and economically feasible where the required chemicals and energy are produced on-site from the saltworks bitterns (i.e. HCl and NaOH). Even the conventional recovery processes such as ion exchange, sorption and precipitation, which have proved to be competitive for metals recovery, are challenged in the case of Trace Elements (TEs). This work studies the recovery of TEs included in the CRMs list from saltworks bitterns after ion exchange processes. First, batch crystallisation and reactive precipitation were tested for some target elements in single-component solutions: Sr(II), Co(II), Ga(III), Ge(IV) and B(III). Then, the experiments were carried out with multi-component synthetic solutions assuming different scenarios of bittern streams coming out a selective extraction stage using sorption and ion exchange processes. The targeted elements were recovered except for Ge(IV), where alternative routes need to be evaluated, as its precipitation involves the use of tannic acid or sulphide solutions that could not be produced from the bitterns. However, a further concentration step would be necessary to achieve element concentrations closer to the mineral phases saturation. Moreover, model simulations were performed using the PHREEQC program, which provided a good prediction of the experimental trends obtained in most cases.</p>

Sustainable Mobility Plan at Area Science Park
<p>This dataset contains data related to the Sustainable Mobility Plan (in Italian: PSCL, Piano Spostamenti Casa Lavoro) of Area Science Park (<a href="http://www.areasciencepark.it">www.areasciencepark.it</a>). It includes information on the number of public transport users, the number of trips made, the percentage of trips made by public transport, the average distance travelled, the number of parking spaces available and the occupancy rate of parking spaces. The purpose of the dataset is to provide open access to the information on which planning is based, and to enable the assessment of the implementation of the plan and its impact on mobility.</p> <p>The main objective of the Sustainable Mobility Plan is to describe the current situation and the initiatives launched and planned for the structural and permanent reduction of the environmental impact resulting from systematic home-work mobility. WP6 Deliverable 6.1 Literature Review - Legitimate crisis governance and economic sustainability
<p>The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic was not only a public health crisis of unprecedented proportions in recent times, it also triggered an economic and social crisis whose consequences will be felt in our societies and economies for years. The decision-making and implementation of the social, economic and fiscal measures in response to the pandemic challenged the economic and fiscal sustainability of states. and simultaneously has raised valid questions about the legitimacy of Covid-19-crisis management. Such concerns are particularly relevant for multilevel systems where (at least) two levels of government are responsible for these areas and decision-making is characterised by either divided or shared powers. This paper reviews existing studies, indexes and databases dealing with the design and effects of the social, fiscal and economic measures in multilevel systems. It addresses general issues around crisis management in multilevel systems general in terms as well as in relation to the social, economic and fiscal measures introduced during the pandemic. The paper also focuses on the role of domestic and transnational governance arrangements in dealing with Covid-19. The review provides an important source to examine policy responses in the context of our study of the legitimacy of social, economic and fiscal measures in multilevel systems.</p>
