Visual function and neuropsychological profile in children with Cerebral Visual Impairment
<p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Visual function and neuropsychological profile in children with Cerebral Visual Impairment” published on “Children”.</p> <p>In this paper, we aimed to a) describe the clinical and neuropsychological profiles b) to investigate the possible effects of visual functions on neuropsychological performance of a cohort of children diagnosed with CVI.</p> <p>The first sheet of the spreadsheet includes data on medical history, visual functions neuropsychological evaluations of the 51 subjects included in the descriptive study. The second sheet includes data on visual functions and neuropsychological evalutations for correlation analyses. All the data, except for age, are encoded as reported in the third sheet.</p> <p>Fifty-one children with CVI were included in the descriptive study, and 40 children were selected for the correlation analyses. For each participant, we collected data on neuropsychological assessment, basic visual functions, global development features.</p> <p>Results showed that oculomotor dysfunction involving saccades and smooth pursuit may be a core symptom of CVI and might have a significant impact on cognitive visual and other neuropsychological abilities. Furthermore, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity may influence cognitive, cognitive visual and academic performances. Our findings suggest the importance of a comprehensive assessment of both visual and neuropsychological functions in children when CVI is suspected, to provide a more comprehensive functional profile and define the best habilitation strategy to sustain functional vision.</p>
Visual function in children with Joubert Syndrome
<p>Introduction</p> <p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “ Visual function in children with Joubert Syndrome ” accepted for publication on “Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology”. In this paper, we aimed to a) describe visual function in children with Joubert syndrome (JS) b) investigate its possible association between with diagnostic and developmental aspects. The spreadsheet includes data on medical history and clinical characteristics of the 59 included subjects (columns A-AB), neuroradiological and genetic data (columns AC-AE), visual functions and neuro-ophthalmological data (columns AF-BN), behavioural and cognitive data (columns BO-BQ). The encoding of data is presented in the second sheet.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This retrospective cross-sectional work included 59 patients (33 male; mean age 9 years 2 months, range 4 months to 23 years) diagnosed with JS from January 2002 to December 2020. Data about clinical and diagnostic evaluations were collected in a data set during a review of medical records.</p> <p>Results (in brief)</p> <p>Ocular motor apraxia was highly represented in our cohort (75%), with a high prevalence of refractive defects and retinal abnormalities. Developmental delay/intellectual disability was frequent (in 69.5% of the sample), associated with retinal dystrophy (p = 0.047) and reduced visual acuity both for near (p = 0.014) and for far distances (p = 0.017). Based on our results, we encourage early and multidisciplinary assessment and follow-up of visual function in children with Joubert syndrome. This would help in planning a personalized rehabilitation to sustain functional vision.</p>
Visual function and neuropsychological profiling of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus.
<p>Introduction</p> <p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Visual function and neuropsychological profiling of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus” accepted for publication on “Brain Sciences”. In this paper, we aimed to a) describe visual function in children with Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus (IIN) b) investigate its possible impact on neuropsychological development and its implications in functional vision, such as learning abilities. The spreadsheet includes data on medical history and clinical characteristics of the 60 included subjects (columns A-I), visual functions and neuro-ophthalmological data (columns J-U), cognitive and visuocognitive data (columns V-AM), school learnings performances (columns AN-AR), neuroradiological, electrophysiological and genetic data (columns AS-AV). The encoding of data is presented in the second sheet.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This retrospective cross-sectional work included 60 patients (43 males; mean age 7 years, range 2 months-17years, 9 month) diagnosed with IIN from January 1st, 2007 to May 31st, 2023. Data about clinical and diagnostic evaluations were collected in a data set during a review of medical records.</p> <p>Results (in brief)</p> <p>The majority of subjects in our cohort presented reduced VA for far distances and normal VA for near distances associated with oculo-motor abnormalities. The overall scores of cognitive and visual-cognitive tests were in the normal range but revealed peculiar cognitive and visual-cognitive profiles, defined by specific frailties in processing speed and visual-motor integration compared to the other performances. The same neuropsychological profiles characterize many neurodevelopmental disorders. As the first exploring neuropsychologic competencies in children with IIN, our study unveils the presence of subclinical frailties that need to be addressed to sustain academic and social inclusion.</p>
