General characteristics of the working fluids for LHP cooling system design

<p>The EVAL project aims to create a demonstrator of a passive cooling system, based on a loop heat pipe (LHP) technology, for efficient thermal management of the Ultra High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) engine bleed system valves exposed to a harsh temperature environment.</p> <p>To achieve this aim, the EVAL team started from a comprehensive study of available working fluids, which have a potential to cope with the target harsh environment and meet the criteria of trade-off analysis such as physical properties (melting and critical temperature, saturated vapour pressure, figures of merit), physical and chemical stability at high temperatures, compatibility with common LHP materials, availability at the market. Also, particular attention is paid to the working fluid environmental impact in terms of ozone-depleting potential (ODP), global warming potential (GWP), compliance with REACH regulations.</p> <p>This data collection presents characteristics of working fluids collected from various sources (specialized databases e.g. ASHRAE, NIST), research articles, conference proceedings, research projects summary reports, data furnished by the thermal fluid manufacturers) and compiled in three Annexes:</p> <ul> <li>Annex A presents data as for ODP, GWP and REACH compliance for 728 working fluids.</li> <li>Annex B presents boiling temperature and critical temperature for 728 working fluids.</li> <li>Annex C presents key thermophysical properties for 32 fluids selected as prospective refrigerants for the EVAL project purposes.</li> </ul> <p>In general, data collection analyses a wide range of working fluid groups: hydrocarbons, oxygenated hydrocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, bromocarbons, hydrobromocarbons and halons, fully fluorinated species, &nbsp;halogenated ethers, fluoroesters, halogenated alcohols, &nbsp;iodocarbons &nbsp;special compounds, mixtures, and others.</p>

Raster and original working data for the paper Holocene matters: landscape history accounts for current species richness of vascular plants in forests and grasslands of eastern Central Europe

<p>Aim: Current species-richness patterns are sometimes interpreted as a legacy of landscape history, but historical processes shaping the distribution of species during the Holocene are frequently omitted in biodiversity models. Here, we test their importance in modelling current species richness of vascular plants in forest and grassland vegetation.<br> Location: Western Carpathians and adjacent regions.<br> Taxon: Vascular plants.<br> Methods: Numbers of all species and of habitat specialists were extracted from plot records of forest and grassland vegetation. For each plot, environmental and historical data were derived from thematic maps. Historical data related to the persistence of (i) temperate taxa during the Late Glacial and Early Holocene, (ii) open-landscape taxa during the Middle Holocene, and (iii) taiga species during the Late Holocene were based on 112 fossil pollen profiles. Boosted regression trees were used to model spatial patterns in species richness.<br> Results: Historical variables always appeared among the best predictors of current species richness. In light forests, species richness highly mirrored both the Late Glacial (12.5% contribution) and Middle-Holocene (8.6%) landscape history. The latter factor became an important predictor also for species richness of steppe grasslands (8.3%) along with temperature seasonality (11.9%). Species richness of dark coniferous forests was best predicted by the Late-Holocene occurrence of taiga forests (14.8%), which had an even stronger effect on the richness of habitat specialists (20.5%). <br> Main conclusions: Landscape changes since the Last Glacial Maximum are important predictors of current plant species richness. The historical effects were found to be habitat-specific and, because they may interact with recent environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures, they often show a non-linear relationship with species richness. We provide one possible direction of incorporating past landscape changes into the models of species richness.</p>

Previst project; a Swiss campaing within the general population for crime prevention in sex work

<p>In this link, we share private pictures and videos from the campaign &quot;We don&#39;t buy a body but a service,&nbsp;part of a crime prevention program in the canton of Vaud (Switzerland). The campaign aimed to prevent antisocial behaviour towards prostitutes by encouraging population&#39;s more realistic view of the sex work and by minimising the excuses for crime -the neutralisation techniques as defined by Sykes &amp; Matza (1957).</p> <p>With the slogan &ldquo;we don&rsquo;t buy a body but a service&rdquo;, we installed a panel in the prostitution neighbourhood in Lausanne (the capital of the canton of Vaud). We also organised four artistic performances in the city centre and we advertised the campaign through interviews with the media.</p> <p>Although the impact of this campaign on the behaviour of the population is difficult to assess, we estimated that the number of local citizens reached is non- negligible. We suggest that sex workers should be encouraged to participate in further campaigns towards the general population as well as the academia should collaborate with practitioners for evaluating the impact of such projects.</p>

Data from: Making Brexit work for the environment and livelihoods: delivering a stakeholder informed vision for agriculture and fisheries

1. The UK's decision to leave the EU has far-reaching implications for agriculture and fisheries. To ensure the future sustainability of UK agricultural and fisheries systems, we argue that it is essential to grasp the opportunity that Brexit is providing to develop integrated policies that improve the management and protection of the natural environments, upon which these industries rely. 2. This article advances a stakeholder informed vision of the future design of UK agriculture and fisheries policies. We assess how currently emerging UK policy will need to be adapted in order to implement this vision. Our starting point is that Brexit provides the opportunity to redesign current unsustainable practices and can in principle deliver a sustainable future for agriculture and fisheries. 3. Underpinning policies with an ecosystem approach, with explicit inclusion of public goods provision, and social welfare equity were found to be central to the success of this endeavour. Recognition of the needs of, and innovative practices in, the devolved UK nations is also required as the new policy and regulatory landscape is established. 4. Achieving our proposed vision will necessitate drawing on best practice and creating more coherent and integrated food, environment and rural and coastal economy policies. Sustainable prosperity should and can form the core of future post-Brexit environmental policy thinking and our findings demonstrate the "bottom-up" and co-production approaches that will be key to the development of more environmentally sustainable agricultural and fisheries policies.

Experimental facilitation of heat loss affects work rate and innate immune function in a breeding passerine bird

The capacity to get rid of excess heat produced during hard work is a possible constraint on parental effort during reproduction (heat dissipation limit [HDL] theory). We released hard-working blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) from this constraint by experimentally removing ventral plumage. We then assessed if this changed their reproductive effort (feeding rate and nestling size) and levels of self-maintenance (change in body mass and innate immune function). Feather-clipped females reduced the number of feeding visits and increased levels of constitutive innate immunity compared to unclipped females but did not fledge smaller nestlings. Thus, they increased self-maintenance without compromising current reproductive output. In contrast, feather-clipping did not affect the number of feeding visits or innate immune function in males, despite increased heat loss rate. Our results show that analyses of physiological parameters, such as constitutive innate immune function, can be important when trying to understand sources of variation in investment in self-maintenance versus reproductive effort and that risk of overheating can influence innate immune function during reproduction.

Simulation models from: Can CRISPR-mediated gene drive work in pest and beneficial haplodiploid species?

<p>Gene drives based on CRISPR/Cas9 have the potential to reduce the enormous harm inflicted by crop pests and insect vectors of human disease, as well as to bolster valued species. In contrast with extensive empirical and theoretical studies in diploid organisms, little is known about CRISPR gene drive in haplodiploids, despite their immense global impacts as pollinators, pests, natural enemies of pests, and invasive species in native habitats. Here we analyze mathematical models demonstrating that, in principle, CRISPR homing gene drive can work in haplodiploids, as well as at sex-linked loci in diploids. However, relative to diploids, conditions favoring the spread of alleles deleterious to haplodiploid pests by CRISPR gene drive are narrower, the spread is slower, and resistance to the drive evolves faster. By contrast, the spread of alleles that impose little fitness cost or boost fitness was not greatly hindered in haplodiploids relative to diploids. Therefore, altering traits to minimize damage caused by harmful haplodiploids, such as interfering with transmission of plant pathogens, may be more likely to succeed than control efforts based on introducing traits that reduce pest fitness. Enhancing fitness of beneficial haplodiploids with CRISPR gene drive is also promising.</p>

Data from: Effectiveness of Online Off-the-Job Training in Attracting Participants and Video-On-Demand Streaming in Improving Work-Life Balance: A Study Focusing on Medical Technologists

<p>The Nara Association of Medical Technologists has introduced online Off-Job Training (Off-JT) starting from FY2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to evaluate the online Off-JT, which differs from the traditional face-to-face format. Firstly, we compared the online format&#39;s ability to attract participants with the face-to-face format based on the number of training sessions and attendees. Despite having fewer training sessions (40.8% less), the online format had an average attendance of 105.4% higher (39.7 vs. 19.3) than the face-to-face format. To enhance participant convenience, we offered a limited number of live and video-on-demand (VOD) sessions on YouTube, evaluating their usefulness through an online survey focusing on work-life balance (WLB). The survey results showed that 81.9% (458/559) of respondents reported an improvement in WLB. The effect on WLB improvement varied depending on the viewing method, with VOD sessions showing 84.1% (376/447) and live sessions showing 73.2% (82/112). We believe that the increased ability to attract participants in the online Off-JT is mainly due to the elimination of travel burdens through internet-connected devices. The combination of live and VOD sessions on YouTube allowed participants to adjust their viewing time, leading to better allocation of free time and improved WLB. The online Off-JT and VOD delivery have shown to enhance convenience for participants by removing geographical and time constraints, resulting in positive effects.</p>

HEartS Professional Survey: Charting the effects of COVID-19 on working patterns, income, and wellbeing among performing arts professionals in the United Kingdom (April-May 2021)

<p>These data were collected using the <em>HEartS Professional Survey II</em> from performing arts workers in the United Kingdom in April–May 2021. <em>HEartS Professional II </em>is an adaptation of the <em>HEartS Professional I</em> survey which was used in April–June 2020 (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.s7h44j14z">https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.s7h44j14z</a>). Both surveys were designed as multi-strategy data collection tools with two main purposes: (1) to chart working patterns, income, sources of support, and indicators of mental and social well-being in order to identify trends in the effects of the lockdown at the time and (2) to explore the individual work and wellbeing experiences of performing arts professionals in their own words, in order to identify the subjective effects of lockdown in terms of challenges and opportunities. The survey covers six areas: (1) demographics; (2) information on illness or self-isolation related to COVID-19; (3) work profiles and income; (4) changes to work profiles and income as a result of the pandemic, as well as sources of support; (5) open-response questions about work and wellbeing experiences of lockdown including challenges and opportunities; and (6) validated measures of health, wellbeing, and social connectedness.<span> The <em>HEartS Professional</em> surveys are adaptations of the Depression, loneliness, online survey, pandemic, performing arts professionals, Social Isolation, UK adult sample, well-being, Work </span>which charts the Health, Economic, and Social impacts of the ARTs (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.3r2280gdj">https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.3r2280gdj</a>). </p>
