B 129. Size 81/2 in. by 6 in.; foll. 69. Twenty-three lines in a page. A Commentary (by قوله ) on a mystic Ḳaṣîdah, the beginning, rhyme, and author of which have not been ascertained. Plainly written, on European paper, of the twelfth century. The words of the poem to be explained are often omitted. Begins:.. اى اغنيت من حاجتى الى السكر من جهة الافاقة الخ. The next paragraph begins:وراءَ بمعنى فوق و السكينة الطمانينة الخ ; the following, مشهدى من الاشهاد الخ ; etc. The last gloss is : التذكار بمعنى الذكر الخ ; and the book concludes : هذا آخر ما ايراده اردناه فى هذا المختصر من شرح القصيدة بعون الله الخ.

Biography and History [IO Islamic 1399]

Size 111/2 in. by 61/4 in.; foll. 520. Twenty-seven lines in a page. Another copy of proceeding work. Well written, by ‘Abd al-razzâḳ b. Ḥasan Muḥammad قربسى (sic), at Aḥmadâbâd. Dated 24th Ṣafar, 1034. The original copy appears to have had several defects, for which blanks were left. All of these have been subsequently filled up in a bad hand. On the fly-leaves of this MS. (foll. 44-46) are added, by different hands, the commencement of an alphabetical list of all the persons whose deaths are mentioned in the present work; and a notice of Taftâzânî, and the dates of his various works, said to be the inscription of his tomb. A later owner, Muḥammad, Riḍa b. Ghulâm Muḥammad, who bought the MS. A.H. 1146, prefixed to it a list of the events and persons mentioned under each year (foll. 2-43). Fol. 1 gives the two notices of the author mentioned already under the preceding no. (note1). Foll. 76, 77, and 398 are misplaced in binding, as may be seen from the original pagination. [Hastings.]

The second, on ff. 50b-105b, is styled قصۀ ملك محمّد (according to the following copy: قصّۀ ملك محمّد و گيتى افروز), the love-story of Malik Muḥammad and Gîtî-afrûz, beginning: راويان اخبار و ناقلان آثار ....... چنين آورده اند كه در زمان حضرت شيخ صنعان در طرف زمين مغرب شهرى بود كه آنرا ابيض مى گفتند الخ. No date. The second story greatly damaged by worms. No. 1183, ff. 105, ll. 13; Nasta’lîḳ; size, 81/8 in. by 53/8 in.

The first Bahâr or the first two volumes (جلد) of one of the largest and most famous Persian romances, the Bûstân-i-Khayâl or ‘garden of imagination,’ by <a href="http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n88001239/">Mir Muḥammad Taḳî alja’farî alḥusainî </a>of Aḥmadâbâd in Gujarât, with the takhalluṣ Khayâl, who wrote this vast collection of tales, in which historical legends are blended with the adventures of Jinns and Peris, at the request of his noble patron, Nawwâb Rashîdkhân Bahâdur, wherefore, as is stated in the Berlin copy (W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 993), the work is also sometimes styled فرمايش رشيدى, and died A.H. 1173 (A.D. 1759, 1760); see A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 193, and Rieu ii. p. 770 sq. It comprises altogether fifteen volumes (جلد), divided into three Bahâr (spring), the second and third of which have the additional title of a first and second Gulistân, comp. the detailed description of this bulky romance in the Bodleian Cat., No. 480 (Caps. Or. D. 9-23, the most complete copy of the work extant, in which only one of the fifteen volumes is missing). This first Bahâr, which bears besides the special title of Mahdînâma (مهدى نامه), was commenced A.H. 1155 (A.D. 1742, 1743), at Shâhjahânâbâd, and serves as a sort of muḳaddimah or introduction to the whole work, relating the life and adventures of Sulṭân Abû-alḳâsim Muḥammad Mahdî and the other ancestors and predecessors of Sulṭân Mu’izz-aldîn (i.e. the Khalîf Alḳâ’im biamrillâh, the hero of the second Bahâr or first Gulistân); the last or fifteenth volume of the whole work (the end of the third Bahâr or second Gulistân) was commenced A.H. 1169 and completed in the month Dhû-alḥijjah of the same year (A.D. 1756, September), at Murshidâbâd, see Bodleian Cat., loc. cit. Beginning of the first volume (No. 1773), on fol. 1b: تبارك الذى جعل فى السماء بروجا و فعل فيها سراجاً قمراً نيّراً الخ Beginning of the second volume (No. 1774), on fol. 1b: ذكر رفتن سلطان ابوالقاسم محمّد مهدى و پادشاهزادگان و بعضى امراء عرب بزيارت حرمين و عتبات عاليّات و بيان وقائع آن’ نقل ( نقلۀ Bodl.copy correctly) اين اخبار از شائبۀ (تشابه Bodl.copy correctly) تحقيق چنين آورده اند الخ. The second daftar or jild of the third Bahâr or second Gulistân, corresponding to the ninth volume of the whole work ( جلد نهم از كتاب بوستان خيال موسوم جلد دويم از بهار سيوم). This second book has been supplemented afterwards by an extensive appendix, subdivided into two shaṭr (شطر), or as the second British Museum copy (Add. 24,935) calls them, saṭar (سطر), and bearing the special title of Shâhnâma-i-Buzurg (شاهنامۀ بزرگ); according to Rieu’s copy this appendix is also designated as سطر الجلد, see the following two copies. Beginning: بعد از سپاس و ستايش خداوند غفور رحيم و الصلوة (و الصلوات read) ناميات بر رسول واجب التعظيم وآل و اصحاب او ...... چنین گوید .... كه چون احوال صاحب قران اصغر در جلد اوّل از بهار سيوم بجاى كه مذكور شد رسانيد شروع در تحرير جلد دويم بهار سيوم نمود و ابتداى اين جلد از احوال صاحب قران اكبر شاهزاده معزّالدين الخ. On the back of the binding it is styled جوامع التواريخ, but on the last page more correctly, as it seems, دفتر دوم مجمع البدائع, the second book of a novel, entitled Majma’-albadâ’i’, or the collection of wonderful and surprising things. At the beginning seventeen leaves are missing, as the Arabic paging shows. The style of this work is about the same as in the preceding Bûstân-i-Khayâl, combining heroic legends and fairy tales. The copy is a correct and tolerably old one. No. 2453, ff. 240, ll. 21; clear Nasta’lîḳ; size, 95/8 in. by 71/2 in.

In. l. 4 the author makes the following statement: چون جلد سيوم بهار سيوم كتاب بوستان خيال باتمام رسيد شروع در تحرير جلد چهارم نمودم الخ; and further down: مخفى و مستتر نماند كه جلد اوّل تمام و كمال مشترك باحوال صاحبقران اكبر و اعظم و اصغر مع توابعات بود و جلد دوم تمام و كمال مشتمل بر احوال صاحبقران اكبر شاهزاده معزّالدين تاجور و جلد سيوم همگى باحوال صاحبقران اعظم كه شاهزاده خورشيد تاج بخش مع متعلّقاته بقلم آمده الخ. In the colophon he says:الحمد لله و المنّة كه جلد چهارم از بهار سيوم كه فقط بر احوال صاحبقران اصغر شاهزاده بدر منير مشتمل بود باتمام رسيد باقى احوال مهتر توفيق و احوالات ديگر در جلد ديگر الخ. This copy has the same preface as Add. 27,302 in the British Museum (Rieu ii. p. 536b) and No. 497 in The Bodleian Cat., which begins thus: حمد و ستايش مر خداى را عزّ و جلّ كه خداى هر دو جهان است الخ, and contains a legendary biography of Firdausî, with a short genealogical account at the end. The poem is, as in many of the preceding copies, divided into four books. Book I, on fol. 9b; II, on fol. 192b; III, on fol. 333b; IV, on fol. 452b. The first book goes down to Rustam’s slaying the dîw Akwân (see Bodleian Cat., No. 500), the second to Kuhram’s falling into the hand of Isfandiyâr, and the third to the beginning of Nûshirwân’s reign; the fourth comprises the rest. Many headings are left blank. Ff. 1 and 8 are supplied by another hand. This copy was finished in Ramaḍân, A.H. 991 (A.D. 1583, September-October). No. 453, ff. 576, 4 coll. Abridgements of the Shâhnâma and other works relating to the poem. 882 Intikhâb-i-Shâhnâma (انتخاب شاهنامه). A kind of abridgement of the Shâhnâma, with the above title given to it in the colophon on fol. 207a; it may perhaps be identical with the اختيارات or ‘selections from the Shâhnâma,’ made by the poet Khwâjah Mas’ûd bin Sa’d bin Salmân, who died A.H. 525 (A.D. 1131), see A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 406, and No. 908 in this Cat.; but this copy is unfortunately in such an extremely bad state, defective at the beginning, with a very large lacuna after fol. 8, and so severely injured throughout, that it is impossible to give any more detailed account of its character or purpose. There is scarcely one leaf undamaged, whole portions of many pages are torn away (particularly in the beginning), and where catch-words are found, they seldom agree with the initial verse of the following page. On fol. 207a, where the title occurs, the copy apparently concludes and is dated by Asad-allâh, A.H. 945, month of Rabî’-alawwal (A.D. 1538, August); but on ff. 207b and 208a again some extracts from the Shâhnâma are found, and on the latter page, written by another hand, is another colophon, dated A.H. 966, 18th of Jumâdâ-alawwal (A.D. 1559, February 26).
