<p>Two zip files containing datasets related to the publication "Notebook Archaeology: Inferring Provenance from Computational Notebooks", IPAW 2021. sampled-nbs.zip contains the 100,000 Jupyter notebooks randomly sampled from GitHub notebooks published through February 2021. The notebook outputs have been stripped. session-histories.zip contains the IPython session histories downloaded from GitHub that were published through February 2021.</p>

The state of digital archaeological archiving policies and practice [questionnaire survey results]
<p>The digital transition in archaeology is often taken for granted, yet the process is far from complete. The topic of digital archiving has been addressed by both the EAC Working Group for Archaeological Archives and the SEADDA project. These two entities joined forces to produce a special issue of the Internet Archaeology journal, bringing together papers on digital archiving practices in over two dozen countries (Richards et al. 2021). The papers were later analysed by EAC and SEADDA to compare the international situation. The results reveal both shared difficulties associated with the issue of documentary archives worldwide and examples of good practices that help to overcome these problems.</p> <p>A questionnaire survey was also carried out to complement the findings resulting from the interpretation of the published articles with supporting data covering the whole European area in a balanced way. The survey allowed for the compilation of an overview of the situation in 27 countries (30 regions) of Europe. All respondents were experts involved in digital archiving and/or heritage data management in individual countries. Based on the collected information, the disproportion in value of archaeological data and their position within heritage management practice is already proving to be a major shortcoming. Brazilian Zooarch Database (ZooarchBR): database of the archaeological fauna of Brazil
<p>The Brazilian Zooarch Database (ZooarchBR) is the first collaborative and open access zooarchaeological database in Brazil, where the user can not only view the available data, but also contribute by entering new/additional information to expand the faunal data recorded in Brazilian archaeological sites. MALDI-TOF MS spectra of archaeological whale bone specimens from Atlantic Europe
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Whale bones are regularly found during archaeological excavations. Identification of these specimens to taxonomic levels is problematic due to their fragmented state. This lack of taxonomic resolution limits understanding of the past spatiotemporal distributions of whale populations and reconstructions of early whaling activities. To overcome this challenge, we performed Zooarchaeology by Mass-Spectrometry on an unprecedented selection of 719 archaeological and palaeontological specimens of probable whale bone from Atlantic European contexts, from the Middle to Late Neolithic (c.3500–2500 BCE) to the eighteenth century CE.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The results show high numbers of Balaenidae (most likely North Atlantic right whale (<em>Eubalaena glacialis</em>)) and grey whale (<em>Eschrichtius robustus</em>) specimens, two species no longer present in the eastern North Atlantic. Many of these specimens derive from contexts associated with the known medieval whaling cultures of the Basques, northern Spaniards, Normans, Flemish, Frisians, Anglo-Saxons, and Scandinavians. This association raises the likelihood that pre-industrial whaling impacted these taxa, contributing to their extinction and extirpation respectively. Much lower numbers of other large whale taxa were identified, suggesting that it was once abundant and accessible whales that suffered the greatest long-term impact. The pattern of natural abundance leading to over-exploitation, well-documented for other taxa, is thus applicable to early whaling. </span></p>
Archaeology demonstrates sustainable Ancestral Coast Salish salmon stewardship over thousands of years pre-contact
<p><span>Salmon are an essential component of the ecosystem in Tsleil-Waututh Nation's traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory, centred on present-day Burrard Inlet, BC, Canada</span><span>, where Tsleil-Waututh people have been harvesting salmon, along with a wide variety of other fishes, for millennia. Tsleil-Waututh Nation is an ancestral Coast Salish community that has called the Inlet home since time immemorial. This research assesses the continuity and sustainability of the salmon fishery at təmtəmíxʷtən, an ancestral Tsleil-Waututh settlement in the Inlet, over thousands of years before European contact (1792 CE). We apply Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) analysis to 245 archaeological salmon vertebrae to identify the species that were harvested by the Tsleil-Waututh community that lived at təmtəmíxʷtən. The results demonstrate that Tsleil-Waututh communities consistently and preferentially fished for chum salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus</em> <em>keta</em>) over the period of almost 3,000 years. The consistent abundance indicates a sustainable chum salmon fishery over that time and a strong salmon-to-people relationship through generations. This research supports Tsleil-Waututh Nation's stewardship obligations under their ancestral legal principles to maintain conditions that uphold the Nation's way of life.</span></p>
Stonehenge LiDAR Archaeology Landscape
A LiDAR landscape of the key archaeological features around Stonehenge including Stonehenge itself, The Avenue, the Cursus and numerous barrow burial mounds. The 1 metre LiDAR is only partial at Stonehenge with many of the sites to the west not included in the current opendata coverage. This is a digital terrain model version which represents the bare ground surface only so prominent buildings, trees and even the stones of the Stonehenge circles are stripped off in this case. Created using 1 metre DTM LiDAR opendata provided by the Environment Agency. Built in QGIS using the QGIS2threeJS plugin. Mount Nebo, Jordan - History & Archaeology Site
Mount Nebo in Jordan. This is the mountain spoken of in the Bible that Moses climbed to look over the Promised Land of Israel before he died and was buried in the mountain valley by God in Deuteronomy 34. 2nd Maccabees 2 also tell that this mountain is the hidden resting place of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle, placed there and sealed by the prophet Jeremiah just prior to the fall of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BC. The moutain remains one of archaeological interest. On top of the mountain are the remains of a Byzantine church and monastery which were discovered in 1933. The Moses memorial may be seen on top of the hill today, which overlooks the Jordan River valley and the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. -Nate Loper Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Gatlin Archaeological Site
The Gatlin Site is an archaeological site in Gila Bend, Arizona. The site preserves one of the few documented Hohokam platform mounds. Associated with the mound are pit houses, ball courts, middens, and prehistoric canals. Between AD 800 and 1200 it was an important Hohokam settlement at the great bend of the Gila River. The Hohokam people were the first farmers in southern Arizona, where the permanent Salt and Gila Rivers flowing through the hot Sonoran Desert made the irrigation strategy possible. The site is the largest in the area and was home to over 500 people. Its importance is indicated by the presence of two ceremonial ball courts and one of the earliest platform mounds known. The mound is notable as being one of only few excavated and documented Sedentary Period platform mounds still relatively intact.
