Data from: Does losing reduce the tendency to engage with rivals to reach mates? An experimental test
<p>Male-male contests for access to females or breeding resources is critical in determining male reproductive success. Larger males and those with more effective weaponry are more likely to win fights. However, even after controlling for such predictors of fighting ability, studies have reported a winner-loser effect: previous winners are more likely to win subsequent contests, while losers often suffer repeated defeats. While the effect of winning-losing is well-documented for the outcome of future fights, its effect on other behaviors (e.g., mating) remains poorly investigated. Here, we test whether a winning versus losing experience influenced subsequent behaviors of male mosquitofish (<em>Gambusia holbrooki</em>) towards rivals and potential mates. We housed focal males with either a smaller or larger opponent for 24 hours to manipulate their fighting experience to become winners or losers, respectively. The focal males then underwent tests that required them to enter and swim through a narrow corridor to reach females, bypassing a cylinder that contained either a larger rival male (competitive scenario), a juvenile or was empty (non-competitive scenarios). The tests were repeated after one week. Winners were more likely to leave the start area and to reach the females, but only when a larger rival was presented, indicating higher levels of risk-taking behavior in aggressive interactions. This winner-loser effect persisted for at least one week. We suggest that male mosquitofish adjust their assessment of their own and/or their rival's fighting ability following contests in ways whose detection by researchers depends on the social context.</p>
Data and results for "A corpus-based study to triangulating experimental evidence regarding verb-noun association for action verbs"
<p>This repository provides spreadsheets containing the results of corpus-based and experimental studies for my undergraduate thesis titled "A corpus-based study to triangulating experimental evidence regarding verb-noun association for action verbs" (supervised by Gede Primahadi Wijaya Rajeg, PhD [main] and Ketut Santi Indriani, M.Hum. [associate]) in the Bachelor of English Literature (BoEL) program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. The thesis explores convergences/divergences between different methods and data types for a set of verb-noun collocations for several action verbs and their synonyms. The description of the dataset is as follows:</p> <ol> <li>"data-raw": A raw dataset containing the results of an experiment conducted using Gorilla Experiment Builder. This consists of responses regarding verb-noun collocation co-occurrences from 17 participants into one. Link to Gorilla Experiment: (https://app.gorilla.sc/openmaterials/622948).</li> <li>"Corpus Analysis Results": A compiled data containing search results of frequencies found in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The frequencies were compiled into tables for the five main verbs showing the number of co-occurrences of specific verb-noun collocations.</li> <li>"Experiment Results (1)": A compiled data containing the experiment results calculated as a total, showing the number of co-occurrences of specific verb-noun collocations across five verbs from the participant responses.</li> </ol> <p>The thesis is part of the pedagogical outcome of the <a title="CompLexico" href="https://www.cirhss.org/complexico/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>CompLexico</em></a> research group at <a title="CIRHSS" href="https://www.cirhss.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>CIRHSS</em></a>, and the Psycholinguistics course I took with I Made Sena Darmasetiyawan, PhD at BoEL, both in the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University.</p>

Data from: Coyotes display minimal response to Cougar scent at experimental carcass sites
<p>Interactions among predators can have cascading impacts on communities and ecosystems. These interactions often occur around carrion, where the carrion provides a food reward, but also a risk of encountering other, potentially dominant, predators. Understanding how predators balance risk and reward at carrion, and how perceived risk changes in response to carcass origins and conditions, provides valuable insight into intraguild interactions. We investigated Coyote (Canis latrans) behavior at carrion simulated as cache sites treated with Cougar (Puma concolor) scent versus carrion used as control sites to better understand how Coyotes assess risk while feeding on carrion. Coyotes displayed similar behavior between sites treated and untreated with Cougar scent, suggesting that the presence of Cougar scent did not alter perceived risk by coyotes in our study. Instead, coyote behavior responded to carcass age, elevation, and whether avian scavengers had visited the carcass. Coyotes spent more time feeding, more time on camera, and touched carcasses quicker as carcass age increased. Avian scavengers appeared to compete with Coyotes, and while the presence of avian scavengers reduced time to carcass detection by Coyotes, it also decreased time spent feeding. These results suggest that carcass condition is a more important indicator of risk and reward than the presence of dominant predator scent to Coyotes. Predator scent may be an unreliable cue of immediate predator presence. Alternatively, all carcasses may be risky because dominant predators also scavenge carrion, creating similar risk regardless of previous visitation by dominant predators. These results provide insights into predator interactions and can also inform the use of scent cues in wildlife management.</p>
