Hadron Shower Simulation Data for Generative Models in Fundamental Physics
<p>Data set containing pion calorimeter showers used to train and evaluate our generative models for our Hadrons, Better, Faster, Stronger publication. Complete dataset consist of three hdf5 files:</p> <ul> <li>pion_train_uniform.hdf5 contains showers originating form pions with a uniformly distributed energy ranging form 10 GeV to 100 GeV. This set was used to train the models.</li> <li>pion_eval_uniform.hdf5 contains showers originating form pions with a uniformly distributed energy ranging form 10 GeV to 100 GeV. This set was used to evaluate the models.</li> <li>pion_eval_steps20to90.hdf5 contains showers originating form pions with discrete energies ranging form 20 GeV to 90 GeV in steps of 10 GeV. This set was used to evaluate the models.</li> </ul> <p>Each file contains a group called 'hcal_only'. This group has two dataset, 'energy' which contains the energy of the pions in GeV and 'layers' which contains the shower images, projected onto a 48x48x48 grid. For our model training this was reduced to 48x25x25 via slicing. The entries correspond to energy depositions in MeV.</p>

Raw data for: Dynamic instability of dendrite tips generates the highly branched morphologies of sensory neurons
<p>The highly ramified arbors of neuronal dendrites provide the substrate for the high connectivity and computational power of the brain. Altered dendritic morphology is associated with neuronal diseases. Many molecules have been shown to play crucial roles in shaping and maintaining dendrite morphology. Yet, the underlying principles by which molecular interactions generate branched morphologies are not understood. To elucidate these principles, we visualized the growth of dendrites throughout larval development of Drosophila sensory neurons and discovered that the tips of dendrites undergo dynamic instability, transitioning rapidly and stochastically between growing, shrinking, and paused states. By incorporating these measured dynamics into a novel, agent-based computational model, we showed that the complex and highly variable dendritic morphologies of these cells are a consequence of the stochastic dynamics of their dendrite tips. These principles may generalize to branching of other neuronal cell types, as well as to branching at the subcellular and tissue levels.</p>

<p>Seamounts are ecological oases nurturing abundant fisheries resources and epibenthic megafauna in the vast oligotrophic ocean. Despite their significance, the formation mechanisms underlying these seamount ecological oases remain uncertain. To shed light on this phenomenon, this study conducted interdisciplinary <em>in-situ</em> observations focusing on a shallow seamount in the oligotrophic ocean. In this dataset, we report high-resolution hydrographic and biochemical observational data from both sectional observations and time-series stations observations.</p>
Data from: Life history changes associated with over 400 generations of artificial selection on body size in Drosophila
<p>Body size is a trait that shapes many aspects of a species' development and evolution. Larger body size is often beneficial in animals, but it can also be associated with life history costs in natural systems. Similarly, miniaturization, the evolution of extremely small adult body size, is found in every major animal group, yet carries its own life history trade-offs. Given that these effects can depend on an animal's environment and life stage and have mainly been studied in species that are already specialized for their size, the life history changes associated with evolutionary shifts in body size warrant additional investigation. Here, we used <em>Drosophila melanogaster </em>populations that had undergone over 400 generations of artificial selection on body size to investigate the changes in life history traits associated with the evolution of extremely large and extremely small body sizes. Populations selected for small body size experienced strong trade-offs in multiple life history traits, including reduced female fecundity and lower juvenile viability. Although we found correlated changes in egg size associated with selection for both large and small body size, after adjusting for female body size, females from populations selected for large size had the lowest relative investment per egg and females from populations selected for small size had the highest relative investment per egg. Taken together, our results suggest that egg size may be a key constraint on the evolution of body size in <em>D. melanogaster,</em> providing insight into the broader phenomenon of body size evolution in insects.</p>

The Global and National Energy Systems Techno-Economic (GNESTE) Database: Cost and performance data for electricity generation and storage technologies
<p>Here, we present a database which collates historical, current, and future cost and performance data and assumptions for the six most prominent electricity generation technologies; coal, gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power, which together accounted for over 92% of installed generation capacity in 2022. In addition, we provide the same data for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), regarded as critical to the integration of variable renewables such as wind and solar PV.</p> <p>The data are global in scope but with regional and national specificity, covers the years 2015 through to 2050, and span 5510 datapoints from 56 sources. The database enables modellers to select and justify model input data and provides a benchmark for comparing assumptions and projections to other sources across the literature to validate model inputs and outputs. It is designed to be easily updated with new sources of data, ensuring its utility, comprehensiveness, and broad applicability in future.</p>
Data set: A solid-state high harmonic generation spectrometer with cryogenic cooling
<p>Solid-state high harmonic generation (sHHG) spectroscopy is a promising technique for studying electronic structure, symmetry, and dynamics in condensed matter systems. Here, we report on the implementation of an advanced sHHG spectrometer based on a vacuum chamber and closed-cycle helium cryostat. Using an in situ temperature probe, it is demonstrated that the sample interaction region retains cryogenic temperature during the application of high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses that generate high harmonics. The presented implementation opens the door for temperature-dependent sHHG measurements down to a few Kelvin, which makes sHHG spectroscopy a new tool for studying phases of matter that emerge at low temperatures, which is particularly interesting for highly correlated materials.</p>

Welle - Umfragedaten (Mai 2024)" erfasst Informationen zur Einführung und Nutzung von generativer künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) im Kontext der Hochschulkommunikation. Die Umfrage, die im Mai 2024 unter 318 deutschen Hochschulen durchgeführt wurde, von denen 82 geantwortet haben, untersucht verschiedene Aspekte, darunter Bekanntheit und Wissen über verschiedene KI-Tools (z.B. ChatGPT), Diskussionen in Gremien, das Vorhandensein von Richtlinien für die Nutzung, das Vorhandensein von Arbeitsgruppen für generative KI, strategische Ziele und Initiativen, Schulungsangebote für generative KI-Tools und die wahrgenommene Bedeutung von generativen KI-Tools in der Hochschulkommunikation. Ziel des Datensatzes ist es, Einblicke in die aktuelle Landschaft und Praxis der Integration generativer KI im universitären Umfeld zu geben. Data from: Affordable de novo generation of fish mitogenomes using amplification-free enrichment of mitochondrial DNA and deep sequencing of long fragments
<p>Biomonitoring surveys from environmental DNA make use of metabarcoding tools to describe the community composition. These studies match their sequencing results against public genomic databases to identify the species. However, mitochondrial genomic reference data are yet incomplete, only a few genes may be available, or the suitability of existing sequence data is suboptimal for species-level resolution. Here we present a dedicated and cost-effective workflow with no DNA amplification for generating complete fish mitogenomes for the purpose of strengthening fish mitochondrial databases. Two different long-fragment sequencing approaches using Oxford Nanopore sequencing coupled with mitochondrial DNA enrichment were used. One where the enrichment is achieved by preferential isolation of mitochondria followed by DNA extraction and nuclear DNA depletion ('mitoenrichment'). A second enrichment approach takes advantage of the CRISPR-Cas9 targeted scission on previously dephosphorylated DNA ('targeted mitosequencing'). The sequencing results varied between tissue, species, and integrity of the DNA. The mitoenrichment method yielded 0.17-12.33 % of sequences on target and a mean coverage ranging from 74.9 to 805-fold. The targeted mitosequencing experiment from native genomic DNA yielded 1.83-55 % of sequences on target and a 38 to 2123-fold mean coverage. This produced complete the mitogenome of species with homopolymeric regions, tandem repeats, and gene rearrangements. We demonstrate that deep sequencing of long fragments of native fish DNA is possible and can be achieved with low computational resources in a cost-effective manner, opening the discovery of mitogenomes of non-model or understudied fish taxa to a broad range of laboratories worldwide.</p>

Data from: Rewinding the ratchet: Rare recombination locally rescues neo-W degeneration and generates plateaus of sex-chromosome divergence
<p>Natural selection is less efficient in the absence of recombination. As a result, non-recombining sequences, such as sex chromosomes, tend to degenerate over time. Although the outcomes of recombination arrest are typically observed after many millions of generations, recent neo-sex chromosomes can give insight into the early stages of this process. Here we investigate the evolution of neo-sex chromosomes in the Spanish marbled white butterfly, <em>Melanargia ines</em>, where a Z-autosome fusion has turned the homologous autosome into a non-recombining neo-W chromosome. We show that these neo-sex chromosomes are likely limited to the Iberian population of <em>M. ines</em>, and that they arose around the time when this population split from North-African populations, around 1.5 million years ago. Recombination arrest of the neo-W chromosome has led to an excess of premature stop codons and frameshift mutations, and reduced gene expression compared to the neo-Z chromosome. Surprisingly, we identified two regions of 1 Mb at one end of the neo-W that are both less diverged from the neo-Z and less degraded than the rest of the chromosome, suggesting a history of rare but repeated genetic exchange between the two neo-sex chromosomes. These plateaus of neo-sex chromosome divergence suggest that neo-W degradation can be locally reversed by rare recombination between neo-W and neo-Z chromosomes.</p>
