This large boulder - likely a glacial erratic - is located on the northern side of the Prince of Wales wood in Kilmartin glen. It is positioned with a prominent view across the landscape to the north. Immediatlely to its west is a small fenced enclosure for livestock purposes. The rock may have been decorated with up to four possible cup marks, altough these are quite shallow and are difficult to identify to the naked eye. <p>This dataset is part of a project under the ATMOC consortium, involving case studies of various simple one-material layers and their optical properties, particularly focusing on their interaction with light in terms of reflectivity. It encompasses samples , studied by institutions like UT Twente, IMEC, and CEA. These samples include flat surfaces coated with materials like Si, Mo, Ru, Al, Ru, Ni, Mo, Nb, Pt, Ta, Cr, TiN, and and rough thermal SiO2 on Si wafers, with thicknesses ranging from a few nanometers to several micrometers, applied through processes like PVD deposition and thermal oxidation at high temperatures.</p> <p>The dataset leverages refractive index data from the online resource "refractiveindex.info" to simulate the optical properties of these layers. The reflection of light is primarily determined by the Fresnel reflection coefficient, with additional simulations for rough surfaces using JCMWave's Finite Element Method (FEM) to understand the effects of surface roughness on light reflection. Primary setup it represents is prototype of Coherent Fourier Scatterometry (typically used for critical parameters of grating reconstruction|).</p> <p>Data are stored in .mat and .csv formats, with MATLAB scripts for generating visualizations of the model results, such as pcolor plots of intensity reflections based on variables like cover thickness and k-axis normalization. Python examples are also provided for loading and visualizing the data. The datasets aim to offer a comprehensive understanding of the optical properties of these materials and structures, supporting the development of standards and models for optical measurements and applications. Additionally, the dataset includes references to further studies and methodologies, such as the T-matrix approach and the Fabry-Perot formula extension, indicating a scholarly foundation in optical physics and engineering research.</p>

Data from: Redox state of NAD modulates the activation of Na-bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1-B by IRBIT and L-IRBIT
<p>NAD is known as a coenzyme for many enzymes catalyzing redox reactions or as a substrate for enzymes for second messenger cADP-ribose generation or protein deacetylation. IRBIT and L-IRBIT are structurally conserved with dehydrogenases but lacking catalytic activity. By protein interaction, the IRBITs instead modulate many proteins of fundamental biological importance. Among these is the Na+-HCO3− cotransporter NBCe1-B, which plays a central role in intracellular pH (pHi) regulation and epithelial electrolyte transport. Here, we demonstrate that NAD modulates NBCe1-B activation by serving as a cofactor of the IRBITs. Blocking NAD salvage pathway decreases NBCe1-B activation by the IRBITs. NAD+ administration enhances, whereas NADH decreases NBCe1-B activity. Our study reveals a new role of NAD and greatly expands our appreciation of NAD biology. Because NAD redox state fluctuates greatly with metabolic status, our work provides insight into how, via IRBITs, energy metabolism could affect pHi regulation and many other IRBIT-dependent processes.</p>

Escravizados na América e na Europa, origens, funções e resistências
<p>A escravidão foi semelhante na América e na Europa? Arlindo Manuel Caldeira responde a esta questão, explicando as diferenças quanto às origens geográficas das pessoas escravizadas, ao tipo de trabalho desempenhado, às formas de resistência a esta condição de extrema violência e às consequências ainda hoje presentes nas nossas sociedades. Sabia, por exemplo, que muitos dos escravizados trazidos para Portugal tinham origem no Norte de África e no Império Turco, havendo ainda um número significativo de chineses, indianos e japoneses?</p> <p>Arlindo Manuel Caldeira é investigador integrado do CHAM-Centro de Humanidades. Licenciado em História, foi professor de História na Escola Secundária de Camões (Lisboa). Publicou vários livros e dezenas de artigos, de que destacamos E<em>scravos e traficantes no Império Português</em> e <em>Escravos em Portugal. Das origens ao século XIX</em>. Está já nas livrarias o seu mais recente livro, <em>O Apelo da Liberdade. Resistência dos Africanos à Escravidão nas áreas de influência portuguesa</em>.</p> <p>A entrevista é conduzida por Teresa Lacerda.</p>

<p>Tabulação dos dados de docentes negros (pretos e pardos) no ensino superior do Brasil a partir de informações autodeclaradas no Censo da Educação Superior do Inep-MEC (evolução histórica de 2010-2019). No Censo da Educação Superior, há dados declarados de cor/raça sobre pouco mais de dois terços dos professores de todas as instituições de ensino superior públicas e privadas do país. Cerca de um terço dos professores preferiu não informar cor/raça (taxa que sobe para quase metade especificamente no caso das universidades federais).
