Long-term studies of secondary succession and community assembly in the prairie-forest ecotone of eastern Kansas, Old-field succession experiment
Local and regional-scale processes interact to govern the assembly, diversity and functioning of ecological communities. Evaluating the interplay of these differently-scaled processes in the regulation of ecological systems is a challenging problem, but is crucial towards understanding and predicting the potential effects of accelerated human activity on biological diversity and ecosystem sustainability. Since 2000, two long-term field experiments have been underway in grasslands of eastern Kansas to investigate the interplay of soil resource availability, species interactions and regional processes governing plant secondary succession, community assembly, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning. Both experiments involve manipulations of soil nutrients in permanent grassland study plots and employ multi-species seed addition treatments to evaluate the contribution of dispersal limitation and regional constraints on local species pools to the regulation of plant community dynamics. Old-field succession experiment, previously funded by the National Science Foundation, was initiated in 2001 in a section of the abandoned hay field that was sprayed with herbicide, plowed and disked prior to the start of the study to investigate plant community dynamics in the context of old-field succession initiated on bare soil. The experimental design involves factorial experimental gradients of nitrogen (N) supply (four levels of N fertilization), phosphorus (P) supply (two levels of P fertilization) and plant propagule input achieved by adding seeds of 50+ native and naturalized species to half of the study plots. With annual sampling this experiment allows us to examine old-field succession and community assembly unfolding along gradients of N and P fertilization and under conditions of ambient and experimentally-enriched species pools.
Faville Prairie State Natural Area Plant Community Study
Data were collected at the Faville Prairie State Natural Area in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Faville Prairie is a 60-acre (35.4 hectares) wet to wet-mesic remnant prairie. Plant species richness and abundance were collected at 180, 2x2m quadrats spaced 100 feet (30.48 meters) apart in a 15 x 12 grid. The impetus for the study was to detect changes in the plant community after a historic flooding event in the late spring of 2008. Previous data collected in 1978 at the same quadrats was used as "before" conditions and the 2010 sample was considered "after".

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Data set contains seasonal summaries (spring and autumn) of the number of individuals of each species of small mammal captured (relative abundance) on each grassland trapline. Each record contains year, season, trapline and number of individuals captured of each species. These live trap records are based on daily captures during two 4-day trapping periods in spring (late February to early April) and autumn (early October to mid-November) for each of 14 permanent traplines established on seven fire-grazing treatments (two traplines per treatment). These seven fire-grazing treatments include three sites that are grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 1 4-year burn) and four sites that are not grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 2 4-year burn).
Plant biomass: The Effect of Nitrogen Addition and Irrigation in High Diveristy Prairies
Water and nitrogen are two potentially major limiting resources in prairie grasslands of the region, and thus might be added to restored high-diversity grasslands used for biofuel production. In this full-factorial experiment, 36 high-diversity 9 m x 9 m plots that were planted with 32 species in 1994 were randomly assigned to one of six treatments. Treatments were all combination of a water treatment (ambient rainfall or ambient rainfall plus ~ 2 cm/week of irrigation) and of a nitrogen treatment (annual nitrogen addition of 0, 7, or 14 grams of N - as ammonium nitrate - per square meter). Aboveground biomass is harvested each fall in each plot, dried, and weighed. These treatments are determining the importance of both water and N limitation in high-diversity restored prairie grassland, their interactive effects, and the year-to-year variation in yields and treatment effects. They are also determining the potential sustainability of such yields and the effects of the various treatments on plant diversity.
Prairie du Sac - Sauk City, Wisconsin, monthly precipitation data
This is a compilation of total monthly precipitation data in total inches for two NOAA weather stations. The Prairie du Sac station data located at the Prairie du Sac dam on the Wisconsin River (43.31 , -89.7283) started with full monthly records being recorded in 1912 with complete monthly records through 2007. In mid-2007 a nearby station was established in Sauk City at the wastewater treatment plant (43.262 , -89.7349) with continuous data from 2008 through the present. The two stations are relatively close (about 3.25 miles apart), and both are slightly more than 4 miles to the west of the centroid of Fish Lake (Dane Co.) a core study lake in the North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Ecological Research Project conducted by the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The compiled monthly records are based on daily NOAA precipitation records available electronically to the public. As a general practice, daily precipitation over weekends and holidays was not regularly recorded at the stations such that cumulative totals were recorded the following workweek day. As such, while the records for each single day were not always accurately recorded, the monthly totals were generally accurate. However, starting in 1996 at the Prairie du Sac station, because the cumulative weekend/holiday precipitation didn’t allow known daily totals, those cumulate weekend/holiday records were not submitted to NOAA so they were recorded as missing data in NOAA’s electronic dataset. To rectify the many months of missing data, pdf’s of the original hand-written monthly submissions were retrieved from NOAA’s archives such that the monthly precipitation totals could be calculated. In the process a few transcription errors in the electronic records of other months were also corrected in this dataset as well as determining a few other monthly records that were missing.
